City Research Online (CRO): the basicsOur set-up• Symplectic Elements Current Research Information System (CRIS),
contains c. 30,000 publication records.• Eprints open access full text repository, contains c. 2,000 papers.
Developments to date• Establishing a presence on City’s main website.• Using data held in the open access repository to feed web services
(including forthcoming Staff Profiles).• Developing use of the CRIS to support REF 2014.• Storing and serving City’s electronic PhD theses.• Social media integration.
What services do we offer? As well as the above we provide advice on…• Open access & copyright.• Funder open access requirements.• Paid-for (Gold) open access.• Scholarly communications, research
dissemination & bibliometrics.• Research data management (early days!)
The open access policy landscapeVarious drivers of policy, including:• Finch Report/RCUK Open Access policy.• HEFCE open access requirements (currently
under consultation).• EPSRC Policy Framework on Research Data.
Challenge of translating these drivers into institutional action.
Policy at CityWe have an institutional mandate:• Compulsory to deposit both metadata and full text.• Compliance rate at about 35%- we could do better!
We need to develop:• Better linkage of deposit to assessment & promotion.• Research Data Management policy, for which we are behind the
curve.
Continuing advocacy required, but also senior managerial ownership.
Thanks! Questions?
