Virginia’s Wind Energy Future

• FreedomWorks, LLC, a MidWind Coalition member, based in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, has proposed building 131 wind turbines in the GWNF along the borders of Rockingham and Shenandoah County, VA and Hardy County, WV

• Good sites and Class 3+ & 4 wind resources in The Coal Fields

• Excellent wind resource and sites in the western mountains

The USA, the World leader in Wind Energy

again? The US reported a record 5,244 MW installed in 2007, more than double the 2006 figure, accounting for about 30% of the country’s new power producing

capacity in 2007. Overall US wind power generating capacity grew 45% in 2007, with total installed capacity now standing at 16.8 GW.

The US will overtake Germany as the leader on wind energy by end of 2009.

The top five countries in terms of installed capacity are Germany (22.3 GW), the US (16.8 GW), Spain (15.1 GW), India (8 GW) and China (6.1 GW). In terms of economic value, the global wind market in 2007 was worth about 25bn EUR or 36bn US$ in new generating equipment.

The Wind Market

•Global Wind Power Growth (GWEC)

1994 – 3,351 Megawatts

2004 – 47,000 Megawatts

•U.S. Wind Power Growth (AWEA)

At the end of 2007 (as reported 1/6/08), U.S. capacity reached 16,818 MW. Utility wind power projects now under construction or under negotiation will add at least 3,000 megawatts of wind capacity in the U.S. over the next five years.

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced a goal of obtaining 5% of U.S. electricity from wind by 2020—a goal that is consistent with the current rate of growth of wind energy nationwide. As public demand for clean energy grows, and as the cost of producing energy from the wind continues to decline, it is likely that wind energy will provide a growing portion of the nation’s energy supply.
