President’s Message Tony DeFazio
What a year this has been for the LBLBC! Our club started out in January with the goals of improving our North green and the general maintenance of our clubhouse. Our North green required extra effort to get it back in bowling condition. Stephanie and her crew have been working very hard to achieve that goal and we should be able to bowl on it regularly soon. With her continuing efforts with the city, Candy got our clubhouse a new paint job and repairs to our leaky roof. These cosmetic changes were just in time for the US National Championships. Our efforts were duly noted by visitors and competitors with many positive comments.
2015 was an amazing year for several of our tournament bowlers who participated in domestic and international competition. A Gold Medal was won at the Tiger Bowls tournament in China and we had a great showing at the US Open. In addition, many of our new members are showing great promise in club bowling and tournament play.
In closing, I would like to say I have enjoyed my term as President of our club. I would like to thank all of the board members, officers and the many volunteers that make our club a very special place to bowl. I would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and best of luck in the New Year.
See you on the green! Tony

MOVIE REVIEW John Arbogast
SLING BLADE
Written, Directed and Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Dwight Yoakam, John Ritter
Billy Bob Thornton plays Karl Childers, an inmate of a state mental institution since age 13. Before he went to the state hospital, his parents kept him in a shed, where he slept on the dirt floor. Occasionally, his mother visited the shed to deliver biscuits and mustard, or to teach Karl's Bible study. Karl had to live there because his birth was the result of sex, which his parents considered a sin. When Karl catches his mother having sex with a local man, all hell breaks out and Karl is sent to the mental institution.
The story begins with Karl as a middle-aged man being released from the state hospital and returning to his hometown. He gets a job, makes some friends, and begins to resume his life and reconcile with the past. He is a lovable, mentally-challenged character, similar to Forest Gump. In spite of his mental disability and his history, Karl has more common sense, kindness, and integrity than most people he meets.
Currently streaming on Netflix
Karl is taken in by an extremely trusting woman, Linda, and her young son, Frank, who Karl befriends. Linda is living in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Doyle, played by Dwight Yoakam. When Doyle becomes a physical threat to Linda and Frank, you can just imagine how Karl is going to react. This movie was made for $850,000 and it made over 25 million dollars. It was one of the best movies of the year in 1998 and Billy Bob Thornton was nominated by the Oscars for Best Actor of the Year for his role. I am a huge Billy Bob Thornton fan and his performance is so amazing. You don’t even realize that Billy Bob is playing the role of Karl. Karl Childers is a character that you will never forget because of Billy Bob’s performance.
The best way I can possibly use to describe this film is perfection. If by some odd chance you've not seen it yet, you owe it to yourself to do so – you won't regret it. You'll only regret that you've waited this long.

News from the
GREENS COMMITTEE Stephanie Johnson
The greens are starting to take a nap this month
and the grass is growing less so Danny won't be
mowing as much. We will continue to keep up on
the top dressing of the greens, fix sprinkler
alignment, and stay on top of the poa and
pearlwort weeds as they develop during the
cooler weather. We have ordered another
mowing cassette for the Dennis – this means we'll
have three mowing cassettes for the 2016
schedule!

November Mystery Member
Born in New York, our chubby- cheeked Mystery Member spent his early years growing up in the Bronx until the family moved to Long Island in 1951. After graduating from college in 1967 he left the Empire State to attend Grad School in Detroit. In 1981, after eleven years in the Motor City, he was offered a job in sunny Southern California. After spending 25 years in Claremont he found the home of his dreams, a New York styled loft in Long Beach, moving there in 2006. Our Mystery Member for November is … Herb Glazeroff.
