Walking with the Wounded was founded in January 2010 by Simon Daglish and Ed Parker after the wounding of Ed’s nephew in Afghanistan, the mission of Walk-ing With The Wounded is to increase the awareness of our wounded and to raise money to fund their career pathway back into employment in the civilian world. In simple terms, a job means security both for our wounded and their families.

WWTW’s philosophy is a positive one, upholding the determination and courage of our wounded, inspiring many to challenge themselves. It is about facing the future with purpose and resolve.

MISSION

PHILOSOPHY

4

OUR DEDICATIONWWTW raises funds to help re-educate and retrain our Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS). For them the unexpected career transition from the Armed Forces to the civilian workplace is a diffi cult one. For them the ‘outside world’ is very different and one where they often fi nd adjustment diffi cult.

Since the beginning of the Iraq War, it is estimated that 4,000 young men and women have suffered life changing physical injuries. But the physical wounds are only one part of the story. A signifi cant number of people are suffering from cognitive injuries. Based of research within the US military this could be up to 20,000. These are individuals who will not necessarily suffer today, but in the future, and it is vital we are able to help them fi nd secure work.

WWTW is not just focusing on those who have been injured post 9/11. It is helping those who served in The Balkans, Sierra Leone, Northern Ireland, The Falklands, the Gulf War, in fact any serviceman or woman who has been wounded or injured while serving, or who has developed cognitive injury as a result of time served in confl ict. It is estimated that up to 40,000 individuals suffer with related effects.

55

As a fund raising organisation, WWTW partners with other entities which deliver the skills and assistance our WIS need for this transition. We currently fund the following programmes and organisations – The Poppy Factory’s ‘Back to Work’ programme, the RBLI’s ‘Life Works’ programme, Skillforce’s ‘Military to Mentor’ scheme, DiscoveryQuest, The Warrior Programme and The Afghan Trust. WWTW also funds its own bursary scheme, First Steps, which provides occupational and vocational bursa-ries to individuals. This is managed by the Army Benevolent Fund.

We also work directly with corporates who are looking to employ wound-ed servicemen and women, identifying the right employment for those with the right qualifi cations. It is vital that those who have been injured are aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, and are able to un-derstand their aptitude so they look for the right job in the right sector. We help to coordinate this process, working with other organisations who have the required expertise. There is extraordinary willingness in the corporate sector to help these young men and women fi nd work, but it is vital that the right job is identifi ed for each individual for the right reason.

In November 2013, three teams of wounded service personnel from The United Kingdom, The United States and the Commonwealth of Nations, all with either physical or cognitive injuries sustained in the line of duty, will set out to race to the South Pole in the largest Walking With The Wounded expedition to date.

The South Pole Allied Challenge aims to demonstrate the close bond between the participating countries both on and off the battlefi eld; in rehabilitation and recovery as the teams tackle the inhospitable Antarctic, overcoming both the savage conditions and their own individual injuries.

The expedition will last for up to four weeks, crossing 335km of the Antarctic Plateau, racing to The South Pole. Each team will be led by a Polar Guide, a challenge mentor, and a globally-recognised media personality. A dedicated medical and support crew will accompany the adventurers for the duration of the race. Safety remains the core principal of our expeditions.

Whilst trekking for 15 to 20km per day, our teams will endure temp-eratures of -45°C, 50mph winds, vast crevasses, moving ice shelves, crumbling glaciers and fi erce snow storms as they pull their pulks (custom built arctic sledges), each weighing in excess of 70kg, towards the southern most point on the globe.

Adding to these challenges, taxing for any able-bodied adventurer, will be the life-changing physical and cognitive injuries sustained by the team members during their military service. The teams will represent and raise funds for military charities from the constitu-ent nations: Soldier On from Canada, Soldiers to Summits from the United States and Soldier On from Australia.

The Allied South Pole Challenge will be an international news event, followed by millions globally through national and international broadcast, online and print outlets. A 3 x 1 hr documentary has already been commissioned by ITV, guaranteeing vast ROI for our expedition partners and broadcasting the expedition to a worldwide audience.

The 2011 North Pole expedition delivered an audited £25m AVE cover-age in the UK and an estimated £100m+ AVE worldwide. The Everest 2012 expedition secured an AVE of £110m worldwide. The Allied South Pole Challenge will achieve well in excess of these fi gures. It has been predicted by Polar Explorers and media experts to be the largest and most high profi le modern day expedition.

2013 SOUTH POLE ALLIED CHALLENGE

Walking with the Wounded began their journey in 2011. The Mission; 4 x wounded servicemen, 200 miles in 4-5 weeks across the North Pole, with temperatures between -15oC to -50oC. With them was Inge Solheim a Norwegian Polar guide to power them through the harsh environments. The second expedition was launched in 2012, this time the mission was to summit

Mount Everest and put 5 wounded servicemen on top of the world.Including narrow ridges with 3km falls; altitude sickness and immense fatigue; unpredictable weather; precipitous climbing over ice-covered rocks it is one of the toughest challenges ever.
