Summer greetings from WTTW and WFMT! This month, we’re taking you on adventures around town and beyond. On WFMT throughout the month, we’ll continue our tour of summer music festivals. Don’t miss our Facebook Live videos all summer from Grant Park. And WTTW takes you under the seas, into the wild, and to foreign lands while keeping you up to date on everything you need to know about what’s happening right here in Chicago.

On WTTW11, get a unique perspective on Ireland’s Wild Coast with Irish native and wildlife photographer Colin Stafford-Johnson, and the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog with Kira Cook as she explores more Islands Without Cars; learn about the contributions to our society of The Arab Americans; watch as a new winner is crowned on The Great British Baking Show; learn how strongly Broadway musicals have been influenced by Jewish artists, and take a leap back in time to a legendary gathering of folk icons at Carnegie Hall. Also, we’ll mark the 20th anniversary of the death of Britain’s Princess Diana with an insightful new documentary and welcome the return of the young detective Endeavour Morse as we embark on a fourth season of the popular drama series. On WFMT, we’re celebrating the festivals. We have three live performances from the Grant Park Music Festival in Millennium Park: guest artist Pablo Villegas with The Spanish Guitar, a Respighi-Haydn-Chadwick concert, and the season’s grand finale, a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth. Visiting us from the Ravinia Festival for live Levin Studio Impromptus will be the Danish String Quartet and The Knights. From the 2017 Salzburg Festival, we’ll broadcast a performance of Verdi’s Aida, starring Anna Netrebko and conducted by Riccardo Muti. And on weekday mornings, Carl Grapentine will be playing music from festivals near and far.

She also invented Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, an ordinary married couple who stumble into spy craft and end up being rather good at it. Join us for two different three-Part dramas, set in 1950s Britain at the start of the Cold War, in which the bickering Tommy and Tuppence are drawn into two baffling mysteries that put them knee-deep in danger.

Live from the Grant Park Music Festival: Spanish Music with Kalmar and VillegasPablo Sainz Villegas has taken his Spanish-guitar interpretations worldwide, from his native land to New York to Israel. He’s presented a number of world premieres, and this season has appeared at Washington’s Kennedy Center and the Aspen Festival among a lot of other engagements. This month he comes to join Carlos Kalmar and the Grant Park Orchestra for Joaquin Rodrigo’s guitar concerto called Fantasia para un Gentilhombre (Fantasy for A Gentleman), composed in 1954 at the request of the legendary guitarist Andres Segovia, who premiered the work in San Francisco. The fantasy is based on dances by the 17th-century Spanish composer Gaspar Sanz. The whole evening at Pritzker Pavilion, in fact, will be Spanish-inspired, beginning with an overture by Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga and continuing with a suite from Bizet’s Carmen. We’ll also hear the Danzas Fantasticas by Joaquin Turina, inspired by traditional Spanish dances from the Basque region, from Aragon, and from Andalucia. Dave Schwan hosts WFMT’s live broadcast.


From Santa Fe: Great QuintetsThe August broadcasts from the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, hosted by Kerry Frumkin, highlight some major quintets, for strings and for strings with piano. The Dover Quartet and cellist Eric Kim will perform one of Schubert’s last compositions, his String Quintet in C, and a favorite chamber composition with musicians and audiences alike, the light-hearted Trout Quintet, will be played by pianist Inon Barnatan and his string-playing partners. Dvorak’s Piano Quintet as performed at Santa Fe featured pianist Peter Serkin with the Dover ensemble, and we’ll also be hearing a late masterwork by Brahms, his String Quintet #2 in G.

LA Opera on Air: Hoffmann and FigaroFrom the Los Angeles Opera’s 2016-17 season comes The Tales of Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach, with tenor Vittorio Grigolo in the demanding title role, and the French bass-baritone Nicolas Testé taking on the challenge of all four of the opera’s villains. Plácido Domingo is the conductor. Then from 2015, the company presents encore broadcasts of its Figaro Trilogy, works based on characters created by the French playwright Beaumarchais. WFMT will air Rossini’s Barber of Seville and Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro from the trilogy during August, with The Ghosts of Versaille by John Corigliano slated for airing in September.

Live from RaviniaThe wide and varied world of French flute music is being explored at this summer’s Ravinia Festival by James and Jeanne Galway and pianist Phillip Moll. They’ll also include on their program some gems from the Doppler Brothers, two virtuosic 19th-century flutists, and an arrangement from the violin encores of Fritz Kreisler. Then later in the month we’ll present a live piano recital by Behzod Abduraimov, a young Uzbekistan-born pianist whose international career was launched after he won the London International Piano Competition in 2009. His program will feature sonatas by Beethoven and Prokofiev, plus shorter pieces by Bach and Schubert.

Two Brahms Symphony CyclesEdo de Waart, born in 1941 in Amsterdam, currently serves as music director of the Milwaukee Symphony and of the New Zealand Symphony. In the course of a long and distinguished podium career, he’s been music director of the San Francisco Symphony and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, in addition to making guest appearances worldwide and conducting in opera houses from Houston to Bayreuth. In Milwaukee, he recently presented a two-concert cycle of the four symphonies by Johannes Brahms, which are being broadcast this month. Coincidentally, Henry Fogel also chose a Brahms symphony cycle for two Collectors’ Corner broadcasts that will air in August. These historic performances are from recordings conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886-1954), one of the most famous and admired, and also one of the most controversial, conductors of the 20th century. Riccardo Muti, Salzburg, and AidaThanks to the European Broadcasting Union and Austrian Radio (ORF), WFMT will be able to transmit a performance of Verdi’s opera Aida from this summer’s Salzburg Festival. This highlight from the festival’s summer schedule – the website says all the performances are sold out – stars Anna Netrebko in the title role with Francesco Meli as Radames and Ekaterina Semenchuk as Amneris. We’re presenting the opera to herald Maestro Muti’s return to Chicago next month to open the 2017-18 season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His orchestra for Aida is the Vienna Philharmonic, with singers from the Vienna State Opera Chorus taking center stage for the famous Triumphal Scene.


Fiesta! looks at Cuban musicDuring its centuries of connection to the Spanish Empire, and during later years too, the island of Cuba developed strong cultural traditions. In the earliest days, Havana and others cities had musical traditions principally centered around churches and convents. Today, the nation remains a powerhouse of music with such composers as Leo Brouwer, Paquito D’Rivera, and Tania León. Hear some samples of all this as host Elbio Barilari profiles Cuba.

John Adams, Leila Josefowicz, and ScheherazadeThe latest concerto by John Adams, celebrating his 70th birthday this year, portrays the Scheherazade of The Arabian Nights as a modern-day woman confronting the male powers that dominate the society in which she lives. It’s a lengthy work for violin and orchestra, with the violin representing the heroine. The composer has said he was inspired not only by the personality of the original Scheherazade – a clever storyteller who outwitted her violence-prone husband – but also Rimsky-Korsakov’s tone poem of the same title, which also has a major role for a solo violinist. Scheherazade.2 was performed by the Chicago Symphony under guest conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen’s direction last March, with frequent Adams collaborator Leila Josefowicz as the guest soloist.
