Wilson Transformer Company (WTC) has recently completed a major upgrade and expansion of its Power Transformer factory. The project started in 2009 with an investment of more than

$65 million with goals of increasing capacity and productivity, improving quality and safety, and adopting the latest technology to become a world-class power transformer manufacturer.

MECHANICAL WORKSHOP

Mechanical building layout is designed for efficient material flow and safe work environment. It is in a controlled environment (cooling, heating, extraction).

SURFACE PREPARATION IMPROVEMENTS • All items blasted to class 2.5 finish measured to 65 um• New Grit Blast Booth, Internal size 13m (l) x 7.5m (w) x

6m (h)• Dual blasting ability with permanent platform at 2.4m

PAINTING IMPROVEMENTS• Installation of two climate controlled paint booths

(relative humidity, and temperature)• 2 coat system (inter-zinc undercoat and inter-fine top

coat)• Low solvent based paint, final build up target 250 um

WELDING IMPROVEMENTS• Welding standards to AS1554 (Procedures / Specification,

Testing, Individual NATA Certification, and WTC standards)• Welding Gas plumbed into building and supplied to each

welding bay• Additional New Submerged Arc Welding machine (laser

tracking)• New Fronius digital pulse welding machines (spatter free)

ELECTRICAL WORKSHOP

CORE CUTTING & BUILDING

Core cutting and building was relocated and now includes efficient material flow, climate control, and natural lighting energy efficiency.

New equipment and other improvements include:-

• One Georg Cut-to-Length Line (100mm to 1000mm widths steel)

• Increased cutting capacity with 3 double level stacking tables

• Ability to punch slots and holes (for loss reduction and stacking)

• New hydraulic Core Building table with improved accuracy, higher productivity and increased safety

• Ability to build 5 limb cores

WINDING SHOP

The refurbished Insulation & Winding area is clean and segregated with positive pressure and climate control.

New equipment and other improvements include:-

• Vertical Winding Machines for disc windings• New mechanically expanding mandrels• New Stand up device and associated equipment• New back stands with tension control

OIL TREATMENT FACILITY

The new Oil Storage and processing facility is in a new building under cover with stainless steel piping above ground to minimise the possibility of spills into the environment. Mineral oil and natural esters can be stored and processed.

New equipment and other improvements include:-

• New tank farm with > 400,000 Litre capacity• Separate processing facilities for oil and natural ester

(FR3)• All 316 stainless pipework throughout system• New Oil treatment plants with on line moisture and

particle count measurement, and PLC controlled distribution within the factory

INTERNAL ASSEMBLY

INTERNAL ASSEMBLY

Internal assembly area has been refurbished with epoxy floors.

New equipment and other improvements include:-

• New Vacuum drying ovens with iso-static pressing (quality)

• New assembly platforms – increase from 4 to 6 (quality and safety)

EXTERNAL ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING AREA

EXTERNAL ASSEMBLY

New equipment and other improvements include:-

• New Micafil Vapour Phase - internal size: 5.9m (l) x 4.93m (w) x 4.34m (h)

FINISHING AREA

The new Finishing Building provides an additional area for transformer despatch with multiple air locks prior to entering the assembly and tanking area.

New equipment and other improvements include:-

• New 2nd 120 tonne crane in the main bay, coupled with the 1st crane, we are able to lift up to 200 tonnes.

• Air skates to move transformers in and out of test up to 300 tonnes

• 3 sizes of skating pallets (75T, 150T, 300T)

TEST LABORATORY

The new HV Test Laboratory is an electrically isolated and shielded building (Faraday Cage), with acoustic treated walls and ceiling.

New equipment and other improvements include:-

• New Haefely Impulse Generators – 1600kV/160kJ & 800kV/80kJ

• New Haefely high accuracy TMS 100kV/4000A loss measuring systems

• Additional Power Diagnostix partial discharge measuring system

• New 500kV AC Separate Source Transformer• Fully integrated PLC System for test set up and safety

segregation• Duplicate systems for training & security
