History of theWerribee Racing ClubRacing in Werribee has overcome its fair share of hurdles to remain a large part of the regions illustrious heritage.

It was April 22, 1862 when the rst Werribee Cup was run. The six-race card, held as part of a sports day to conclude a military encampment of the volunteer corps on the Werribee Estate, marked the birth of what would become a proud tradition of racing at Werribee.

The Cup drew a eld of three, Black Bess, Minerva and Nelly Bly. The jockeys wore their military uniforms. Black Bess put on a courageous run to win the inaugural Werribee Cup by two lengths.

While informal picnic race meetings were conducted at Werribee during the 1860s and early 1870s, it wasnt until 1874 that a formal meeting was held at Wyndham Racecourse.

In the 1880s, Victorias land boom collapsed leaving the colonies in nancial stress. So too was the Wyndham Racing Club and during the Depression years of the 1890s the racecourse was neglected. It became infested by rabbits and home to swagmen. From 1900-1912 racing on the course was suspended.

In 1912, racing at Werribee was given a second chance with the formation of a new racing club, appointment of new trustees and a new act of Parliament to enable the Werribee Racing Club to function.

The formation of the Werribee Racing Club breathed new life into the Wyndham racecourse.

Racing eventually resumed at Werribee on March 30, 1915 and Werribee became known as a metropolitan club racing under the auspices of the Werribee Racing Club.

The Werribee Racing Clubs iconic Werribee Cup grew in popularity and drew city crowds, cementing itself as an important feature on the racing calendar and the regions social calendar.

The cup has attracted many well known winners over the years but none more famous than Melbourne Cup winners Even Stevens (1961) and the legendary Makybe Diva (2004, 2005 & 2006).

This year the Werribee Cup has returned to spring to reclaim its place as an important provincial cup meeting in the Spring Racing Carnival.

Wyndhams key advocacy group has thrown its support behind Werribee Mercy Hospitals push for the state government to fund its planned $85 million expansion.

As reported by Star Weekly, the lack of critical-care facilities means the hospital is forced to transfer between 85 and 90 patients a month from its emergency department to other hospitals that have the capacity to provide intensive, coronary and high-dependency services.

While the Mercy awaits funding, in the past week the Coalition has announced $98 million for a redevelopment of the Northern Hospital while, if elected, Labor has pledged a $106 million upgrade of Casey Hospital.

Mercy Health chief executive Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen says he is seeking an urgent commitment from both Labor and the Coalition to the next stage of the hospitals master plan, which would include a critical care unit, an extra six operating theatres and 56 in-patient beds.

The only way we can continue to provide and build on our great service is through a commitment of further state government funding, he said. With the closest critical-care unit more than 22 kilometres away, few could argue that the Wyndham community faces some of the poorest access to health services in metropolitan Melbourne.

In February this year, the hospital unveiled its $28 million Catherine McAuley Centre, a rehabilitation and geriatric medicine complex,

and, in July, it started construction on the $34.7 million Mercy Mental Health redevelopment.

Committee for Wyndham chief executive Chris Potaris said the hospital and the community could wait no longer for better health services.

During the past five years, the hospital has transferred 588 patients to critical-care services at other hospitals, he said. It is consistently the worst-performing outer metropolitan hospital for emergency patients whose length of stay is greater than 24 hours.

With Wyndham still Victorias fastest- growing municipality and with a population now in excess of 200,000, Professor Cornelissen said funding for the hospitals expansion was desperately required. Demand for our services will only increase in coming years with Wyndhams population predicted to rise to more than 384,000 by 2035, he said.

As a community, we must be able to keep pace with the number of patients using our services and we are calling on Premier Napthine and Opposition leader Andrews to acknowledge this.

    Health access needs attention

Motorcycle riders from across Victoria are gearing up for this years Father Bob Maguire Foundation Christmas Toy Run, which will leave from Werribee on December 7.

And the Wyndham community is being asked to contribute.

Riders will depart from five locations across Melbourne on the day, carrying toys and other items, including clothing and tinned and non-perishable packaged food.

All the donated goods will be delivered to the foundations headquarters in Albert Park and distributed to needy children and families just in time for Christmas.

Community donations of toys, food, clothes, blankets and money will also be accepted.

The event is being put together by Independent Riders Group, the Victorian

Scooter Riders Association and Freedom Riders of Australia.

Werribee ride leader Dean Marks said the groups were joining forces to make a difference.

There are 350,000 motorcycle riders in Victoria and were like a big family, he said. We come together to support people going through hard times.

This will be the first time the event has started from Werribee hopefully well be able to get plenty of support.

The riders will leave from Chatterbox Caf, 63 Watton Street, Werribee, at 11am.

Donations can be made by phoning 9681 3255. For more details, go to www.melbournetoyruns.info.

    9 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 12, 2014

A partnership between Westrans and Maori leaders is helping drive down fare evasion and violence on Werribee buses.

Since July, Victorian Maori wardens have been riding Westrans buses around Werribee, reaching out to Maori and Pacific Islander young people using the fleet.

Victorian Maori Wardens chairman James Hohepa Smith said the group, which comprised Maori elders from across the western suburbs, were looking out for young people at risk.

The partnership with Westrans began after drivers noticed an increase in Maori and Pacific Islander youths causing trouble on buses and fare evading.

Mr Smith said the Maori wardens spoke to young people on the buses to find out what was troubling them.

Were not on the buses searching them or telling them what to do, he said.

Many of them dont have anyone else to turn to and, in many cases, theyre riding the bus because they are bored and have nothing else to do.

Deborah Goon, communications manager for CDC Victoria, which operates Westrans, said drivers had reported a drop in fare evasion and violence on Werribee buses since the partnership with the Maori wardens began.

The drivers love having the Maori wardens on board and the general public feels safe, she said.

The Victorian Coroner will not conduct an inquest into the death of David Flowers, who was killed when another driver slammed into his car at a roundabout in Laverton North three years ago.

Mr Flowers widow, Lynette, received a letter from the coroners office last week, denying her request for an official probe into the circumstances of her husbands death.

Im in shock, she said. Its taken up a lot of my energy and at the moment Im just exhausted by the whole process.

Ms Flowers, of Werribee, expressed serious concerns about the police investigation into her husbands death. Among her concerns are that it took police eight months to interview the other driver, which police have previously stated was because they were waiting for a medical review.

The police brief also revealed the other drivers medical records were not in the correct order.

A statement from the other driver involved in the crash said he had felt dizzy and his vision became blurred. He claimed to have lost control of his car while driving along the Princes Freeway before taking the Laverton North exit, where he became airborne when he drove straight over a roundabout and into Mr Flowers car.

According to the police brief, the driver had a stroke the next day while he was in hospital.

The Coroners Court was notified in July 2012 that police were no longer pursuing a criminal investigation into Mr Flowers death.

Ms Flowers now intends to lodge an official complaint into the way police handled the investigation. I want them to know the effect this ordeal has had on me and my family.

Just over a fortnight until Victorians head to the polls for the state election, the political campaigning is in full swing with Liberal Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn last week warning the west was at grave risk if the East West Link did not go ahead.

While the Coalition will build the project if re-elected on November 29, Labor is vowing to dump plans for the controversial toll road and tunnel, despite contracts already being signed.

Labor is spruiking its proposed West Gate Distributor, which will add an extra lane on either side of the West Gate Freeway and remove up to 30,000 vehicles and 5000 trucks a day from the bridge.

Mr Finn called on Wyndham council to get behind the project because it was the right thing to do. It [East West Link] is the only way to unclog the Princes Freeway. The time has come to put politics aside if the council doesnt support East West Link, its not doing its job on behalf of the people of Wyndham.

Mayor Peter Maynard said that while the council was yet to formally consider its position on East West Link, it had endorsed the Western Transport Strategy, produced by the Western Transport Alliance and LeadWest, which identifies the western section of the link connecting the Port of Melbourne to the CBD as the highest priority for the western suburbs.

    Dire warning on link plan

    By Cameron Tait

An early start to this summers fire season has prompted warnings for Wyndham residents to prepare for the worst.

Werribee CFAs First Lieutenant Darryl Wells said the community, particularly those on the citys fringe, needed to be on high alert with conditions prime for fast-moving grassfires.

Mr Wells said significant grass growth over winter had dried out over the past few months.

Grassfires have started earlier than usual. We typically see the conditions were experiencing now in late November or early December, so were about four weeks ahead of schedule, he said.

People need to take all of the necessary precautions to protect themselves by slashing their grass and clearing in and around their properties.

One of the biggest issues we face is people who move out to Wyndham from the inner suburbs or the other side of town, and suddenly theyre confronted by the risks and dangers associated with grassfires.

Last January, a grassfire burned more than 113 hectares at Little River, while the previous summer, properties from Balliang East to Melton South were placed on alert after a fire that started at Little River tore through 350 hectares.

Wyndham council has already sent letters to owners of vacant land reminding them to keep undergrowth cut to a height of no more than 15 centimetres and keep properties clear of rubbish and litter, or face potential fines.

A predicted hot, dry summer will mean grassfires are likely to start more easily

    Fringe ripe for grassfire

and burn faster and with more intensity. Mr Wells warned that many households were vulnerable.

Many people are surprised by the speed and ferocity of grassfires, but they kill just as quickly as bushfires, he said. Wyndham has a significant fire history and everywhere

from Little River to Wyndham Vale, Tarneit and Truganina is at risk.

During Fire Action Week, which concludes November 23, CFA brigades are encouraging people to have their properties ready for the months ahead.

Now, a new e-book by Truganinas Dene Menzel will help you take your talents from the confines of the bathroom to the stage and beyond.

The book, The Voice Factor: From Shower to Stage in Five Easy Steps, turns the tables on traditional vocal coaching by providing simple and effective methods for improving singing.

Menzel has more than three decades experience as a singing teacher and in the entertainment industry, including performances in musicals, with bands, on television and corporate gigs, and as leader

of the Goss Community Choir. She has been involved in the music industry since she was five years old.

I love it, Menzel said. To share my passion with others by teaching them how to sing is a real joy.

The book is easy to understand and is targeted at people who may not have any real knowledge of music, but who have always wanted to learn. Its about breaking down the barriers and letting go of your inhibitions.

Kate Ceberano has written the forward to the book, which goes on sale this Thursday at www.amazon.com.

Whats your connection to the local community?Im a founding member of the Wyndham Disability Action Group and have been on the committee since the 90s. We advocate and support people with a disability and their carers.

Im also involved with the Salvation Army and have been a senior soldier for 10 years. I volunteer for them at Werribee Plaza on Mondays, running a friendship group, and Fridays manning the information kiosk and providing support to people who need it.

What do you like about Wyndham? That anyone, regardless of their circumstances, can belong. The councillors are very accessible. We have a great local theatre at Wyndham Cultural Centre and I love to support it.

What would you like to change?Id like to see many more business premises in Wyndham CBD wheelchair accessible.

Id also like to see Werribee railway station upgraded as theres no lift and the ramps are steep, which is a nightmare for people in a wheelchair, the elderly or parents pushing a pram.

What do you remember being in Wyndham thats no longer there?Theres a different mix of people here now, its quite wonderful. Im a migrant from war-torn Europe and its great to see people coming to Wyndham and bringing their culture and food and sharing it.

The area has also gone through enormous growth. I remember when I moved here and

MY WYNDHAMWyndham resident Christine Williams has been volunteering in the local community since arriving here in 1978. Im passionate about peoples rights and needs, she says. By Rebecca Miller.

Werribee was known as a country suburb and now new suburbs are sprouting up everywhere.

Whats your favorite eatery or place to get coffee?Tasty Gate in Werribee. They have home-made Malaysian food, which is great value for money,

and they provide friendly service. Corinthians caf in Hoppers Crossing is a lovely upmarket place with great coffee.

Share a funny story of being out and about in your neighbourhood? On my 60th birthday in 2010, I was going to

Werribee Plaza to do my volunteer work. I went to the bus stop and when the bus came I said Hi to the driver and he put the ramp down for me. I mentioned to him it was my birthday and when I got on the bus everyone sang Happy Birthday to me. Then the driver drove off, but he forgot to pull up the ramp and it ripped off.

Tucked beneath a bridge at Wyndham Vale, a group of the citys most at-risk teenagers are making a colourful statement, but its not what you may expect. Using their creative flair and natural talent, they are taking part in a Wyndham council project designed to keep them engaged in the community. Most of the teenagers in the project have dropped out of mainstream schooling and were this week putting their skills to the test with the help of a street artist on mobile graffiti boards built by Wyndham Park Mens Shed members for the November 21 Youth Fest and future graffiti programs. Western suburbs residents have questioned Labors priorities after it pledged millions of dollars for the Western Bulldogs to play footy at Ballarat while overlooking the urgent needs of Footscray Hospital.

Labors $31.5 million plan to upgrade Ballarats Eureka Stadium means the ground could host two or three matches every year.

Opposition leader Dan Andrews said the new stadium would bring footy closer to families and to country regions. The Ballarat region electorates of Buninyong, Wendouree and Ripon are held by margins of less than 2 per cent.

But third-generation Footscray resident and community volunteer Ken Betts says the stadium decision is outrageous.

He said the money should be used to improve Footscray Hospitals 60-year-old buildings. Our hospitals are screaming for money, Mr Betts said. If you have a sick child, you take them to the hospital, not a football club.

Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach said primary services for the community come first.

Footscray really needs a world-class hospital everyone in the west goes there for medical needs, and its a really old building with poor-quality facilities. The city is growing by the second, but medical staff still work at sub-standard facilities.

I propose there be a program for redevelopment where the 60-year-old building, that is asbestos-ridden, be updated. The city of Maribyrnong will work collaboratively to make sure any development is done.

Its the only hospital that hasnt received upgrades were being treated as door mats.

Cr Quach said the emergency department at Footscray, especially, needed urgent redevelopment.

A spokesman for Mr Andrews said Labor was the only party to invest in the wests education, transport and health.

    Wyndham has some wonderful

Peter Wilmoth meets the inspiring Connie Johnson

Legacy of loveConnie Johnson is facing death in the way she faced her three cancer diagnoses at age 12, 22 and 33: with an inspirational courage and grace. So its a privilege to meet the woman who wants to leave this world a place thats better, where fewer people die because they might be inspired to seek early intervention.

She moves slowly and talks softly in the hotel restaurant where we meet and, having read her book the day before, I know her story well well enough for tears to fall straight onto my desk in the mid afternoon. I might as well say it because she asked me, Did you cry? And she wanted to know when. I told her it was when she spoke to her dying friend Jacquie in hospital.

Its a brutal passage: two kids dealing with cancer. Jacquies cancer was about to claim her and she could no longer talk, so Connie talked to her on the phone, trying to calm her. Connies was one of the last voices Jacquie heard.

A prcis: Johnson is 37. Her husband Mike is 36. They married in 2004 and have two sons Willoughby, 8, and Hamilton, 7. Johnson has had cancer in her life since the age of 12, when they found a tumour in her leg.

It was really overwhelming, she says. I didnt really understand at first. Dad kept putting it in terms of a tumour, and I didnt know that a tumour could be cancer. It wasnt until I had some friends over to celebrate getting out of hospital that the cancer word was dropped.

A friend had said to her: My mum says you have cancer. She said I shouldnt hang out with you any more because itll hurt my feelings when you die.

It was tough growing up with chemotherapy, being bald, being on crutches. Wrapping my

head around what it could mean to have cancer Dad [and my sister] assured me that Id be OK. Looking back, they didnt know that. They were just as scared as I was.

Making things tougher still, was the fact that Johnsons mother had died when she was four and her brother Sam now better known as the successful actor, Samuel Johnson was three.

They were brought up by their father, a writer and renovator. He was the best role model I could ask for, she says. He explained everything to me: You have to have this needle, you need to have this medicine because this medicine is going to kill the cancer and if you dont have this needle you wont be able to have the drugs that kill the cancer and youll have to have an operation and youll die.

Id say, I dont want to have this needle, and hed say, Well, Con, sometimes in life youve got to be strong and do something you dont want to do, and now is one of those moments. He was a very good teacher like that.

The family moved around a lot as their father renovated and sold houses, living in Williamstown, Yarraville, Kensington, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. Every year a different house, a different school, she writes.

Connie and Sam were especially close. In one house they shared a secret door between

their bedrooms and would play board games at night.

In 2002, Johnson moved to Canberra with her husband, Mike. At 33, Johnson received the worst diagnosis: she was told she had breast cancer that had spread and there was no cure. She says things could have turned out differently if doctors, believing she had mastitis, had acted more decisively, given her history ofcancer.

When Sam asked Connie what she wanted her legacy to be, he wasnt quite prepared for the answer: she wanted him to ride his unicycle around Australia to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. He did, setting off in February 2013 on a year-long 15,478-kilometre ride and raising more than $1.9 million. They founded a charity, Love Your Sister, whose work continues. From Sam it was a gift of love to his sister, but also to all women.

She wants her legacy to be inspiring people who are unsure whether to get checked out early. Its my biggest wish, that people are diagnosed early in a way that I wasnt.

Everyone can encourage the people in their life to be pro-active about their life Know your body and if you feel like somethings wrong, get it checked.

She says she is scared of dying but, reflecting on her life, says shes been lucky in many ways. If you write down all the good things that have happened in my life, all the amazing people Ive met and all the amazing experiences Ive had and then you stack them up against the bad luck, Im so overwhelmingly lucky.

Love Your Sister by Connie and Samuel Johnson (Hachette, $32.99)

Wealth comes through relationships Im one of the wealthiest people I know - Connie Johnson

Rich in history and natural beauty, Port Fairy has always been a popular destination for Victorians seeking a weekend getaway or a couple of weeks by the sea.

With a beautiful swimming beach to its east, rugged rocky coastline to the west, and the Moyne River, its possible to enjoy a plethora of aquatic activities, ranging from swimming and surfing to fishing and long walks along the sand.

Its also a great spot for wining and dining, with plenty of options to suit all tastes and budgets, from the pub grub at the historic Caledonian Inn (The Stump) to the authentic Italian cuisine at LEdera.

Established in 1844, the Caledonian Inn on Bank Street is Victorias oldest continually licensed hotel and you may get some old- fashioned service, including a free joke (whether you want it or not) from the bartender.

Its got a good, loud public bar filled with locals and visitors and the bistro is always busy. The food isnt anything to write home about, but its good value with generous helpings. The menu features twists on some old favourites, such as the variety of chicken parma options that include the Mexicana, which is kind of like nachos but with a schnitzel in place of corn chips. Its trashy but tasty.

Diagonally opposite the Caledonian, LEdera looks like a boutique Italian restaurant. But behind the elegant faade is a large space with a bar and two rooms making it excellent for functions.

My dining experience here was at a wedding. If the food was anything to go by, its excellent reputation as an a la carte restaurant is warranted. There was no rubber chicken and beef option.

Starters included a nice range of antipasto and scrumptious seared prawns. The main meals, including delicious lamb cutlets, were fresh and well presented.

Around the corner on Sackville Street is a great example of the new guard breaking into the regions hospitality scene.

Coffin Sally is a hip little pizza restaurant and bar tat, as one punter put it.

It does have a Brunswick vibe to it and I must confess feeling well beyond the target demographic. My first impression was this was a pretentious hipster bar, but my own prejudices were soon discarded.

The pizzas were fantastic. They were a very decent size with fresh ingredients and a crust that youd be forgiven for thinking was cooked in a wood-fire oven, all reasonably priced at about $14. The drinks list is very impressive but it was only when we decided to camp at the bar, near the glorious bluestone fireplace, that I

Fairy ales hit the spotrealised how seriously this place took its booze. Theres nothing but top-shelf stuff here. The barman, Marcus, has a passion for his craft thats evident through his knowledge of the drinks he serves and the stories behind the labels on the bottles.

Coffin Sally co-owner Trent Eggington opened the place with chef Peter Charlton in 2012 after gaining experience in Lorne and Melbourne at establishments such as Cookie.

After several stouts (the beer list is extensive) including Youngs Double Chocolate from England, a very nice Sri Lankan porter called Sinha (which Marcus lamented was no longer available in Australia) I was a Coffin Sally convert and tweeted to anyone who cared that I have found the best bar in Victoria and its not in Melbourne.

Sobriety has not tempered my opinion.Port Fairy has no shortage of breakfast spots.

I could be writing about any, but it was The Hub, prominently situated on the corner of Bank and Sackville streets, that we happened on.

Theres a substantial breakfast and lunch menu, but I couldnt go past the simply named breakfast roll Turkish bread with egg, bacon and cheese.

Yes, this is simple fare that anyone can make, but this was put together in perfect proportions. The first morning we were there, my partner, doing her best to stay in shape for the wedding, opted to forgo brekkie but decided on having a bite of mine then two, then three.

    By Katrina Lyle

It was 100 years ago this week that the Australian warship HMAS Sydney was involved in the first naval battle of World War I with the German cruiser SMS Emden.

One of Sydneys crew members, torpedo gunner Clem McFarlane, had deep links with Bacchus Marsh.

The grandson of pioneer settlers Cornelius and Mary Mahoney, Clem spent much of his boyhood and youth in the old Mahoney family home, now standing proud with a new lease of life on the northern side of Bacchus Marsh Road, close to the start of the Avenue of Honour as one leaves town.

Clem, born in West Melbourne on April 21, 1887, and elder brother Cornelius jnr came to live in Bacchus Marsh after the death of their father in 1889. Once in the town, where their grandparents and Aunt Jane still lived, the boys attended Bacchus Marsh State School No 28.

Clem enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1905 at the age of 18. At that time there was no Australian navy; Clem trained at the HMS Excellence gunnery school in Portsmouth, England. His transfer from the RN to the RAN on October 11, 1912 (the year after the RAN was formed) was duly reported in the records of both navies.

HMAS Sydney was commissioned in Britain on June 26, 1913, and Clems new role as Sydneys torpedo gunner was officially confirmed.

The Sydney sailed for Australia the following month. It and its sister ship Melbourne were later joined by HMS Minotaur and the Japanese Ibuki. They were ordered to escort the first Australian troop convoy, leaving from Albany in Western Australia bound for Europe. Protecting 38 troop ships and 20,000 men, they sailed on

Bacchus lad lands first blowsNovember 1, 1914. The captain of Germanys SMS Emden, Karl von Muller, requested that his warship act in the Indian Ocean as a lone wolf to disrupt trade and demoralise local populations. In that role, the Emden was particularly effective. Plying the trade lanes between August 4 and November 1, 1914, the Emden sank no fewer than 15 British ships and captured another five.

At 6.30am on November 9, 50 miles from the Cocos Islands, Melbourne picked up a message from the Cocos radio station: Enemy warship off island.

Ironically, von Muller had taken the Emden to the Cocos Islands to disable the radio transmitter, but the message got out before the transmitter was destroyed.

The Sydney peeled off the convoy and made her top speed of 27 knots in pursuit of the enemy ship. SMS Emden was sighted at 9am and by 9.40, the battle had begun.

Von Muller knew that the Emden needed to land the first blows fast and hard if he was to succeed. With the third and fourth salvos, the Emden found its range, the ensuing rain of shells doing significant damage to the Sydney. The salvos continued while the Sydney sought to find her range amid the battle smoke.

Eventually, the Sydneys shots began to disable the Emden. Wave after wave of relentless shelling wrought destruction and caused significant casualties. Three of the Emdens funnels were shot away, most of her guns were disabled and fire broke out on the aft deck.

Loathe to surrender, von Muller used what little engine power he had left to run his ship aground on North Keeling Island.

It took some persuasion from the Sydney before the white flag was run up, but a ceasefire was called at 11.20am. SMS Emden, the Swan of the East, lay crumpled and broken, her

decks a mess of twisted metal, fire and carnage.Clem wrote his own brief account of the

battle to his family in Bacchus Marsh two days later: Nov. 11th. This is to tell you I am well. You have seen that we have sunk the Emden on the 9th inst. Engagement lasted 1 hour 40 minutes. Emden caught fire and ran ashore on Sth Keeling Island, a terrible wreck. All her funnels, foremast and bridge were knocked down. Sydney practically uninjured. We had about four killed, 20 wounded. Emden, about 250 killed. We have 150 of her prisoners and wounded on board. I have to make a

number of reports on the action so must close. Clem won promotions throughout the war,

seeing further action on the Sydney and later aboard HMAS Brisbane.

His personal star was rising, too he had fallen in love with the beautiful Irene May Gibb, who had grown up in Fiji where her father was post-master general.

They were married at St James Church, Sydney, on May 20, 1918. The following year, on June 30, 1919, twin sons Brian Mahoney McFarlane and Alan Gibb McFarlane were born.

After the war, Clem McFarlane continued his distinguished career, eventually rising to the rank of commander. During World War II, he served as a director of security in Australia.

He eventually retired in 1947. Clem and Irene retired to Gisborne and enjoyed civilian life, pursuing business and family interests. The only physical reminder of his gunnery days was a chronic discomfort of the right shoulder.

John Clement McFarlane died in 1974, aged 87. Irene McFarlane, his partner for more than 50 years, died later the same year.

His World War I service is remembered in the Bacchus Marsh Role of Honour and in the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour. Elm number s180 stands midway along the avenue, near Woolpack Road and an easy walk from Clems childhood home.

Literally a stroll through the park from Werribee Plaza, this house is in an easily accessible street just off Heaths Road.

Its the kind of place that may tickle an investors fancy or tempt a young family taking their first step into the property market. Whoever gets it, the new owner will have scored a low-maintenance property that requires just a bit of a garden buff-up before moving in or renting out.

Floating floorboards in every room including bedrooms wont be for everyone, but what they do offer is absolute ease of upkeep and a bulwark

against allergies, should that be an issue. Landlords and tenants love them (no ugly carpet stains) and mothers of young children love them (no ugly carpet stains).

But floorboards are not the only attraction here, the house has everything todays buyers demand.

Beyond a leadlight-paned front door, the entry hall with bulkhead has double doors on the right opening to a study with a built-in desk plus access to the garage.

The main bedroom opposite has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite decked out in classic black and white, a circular

raised vanity basin adds a modern touch. Another bedroom, with mirrored robe, is next door, while two more bedrooms (also with mirrored robes) are down the back near the large main bathroom, also with black-and-white decor and theres a corner spa for a bit of luxury. The toilet is separate.

Along with an open lounge room near the entry, a large living hub wraps around the kitchen, with the meals zone set in a wide bay window dressed in roman blinds.

The kitchen has a large preparation bench, white vinyl-wrap cabinetry, a

A gabled pergola with Laserlite up top and coloured concrete below gives abundant space for gatherings and links with the backyard. Theres a large garden shed.

Other features are ducted heating and cooling and a stamped concrete driveway, which leads to a remote-controlled double garage with internal access and a back roller door.
