Made in HanfordThe Bomb that
Changed the World
Hill Williams
In 1932, James Chadwick,a British scientist, discovered the neutron.Ominously, in late1938 on the eve of World War II, Germanresearchers used the sub-atomic particle to splitthe uranium atom, andthe United States soon
found itself in a race against Germany for theultimate weapon—one able to release theenergy of an uncontrolled chain reaction.President Franklin D. Roosevelt took asignicant gamble and approved a projectbased more on hopes and assumptions than
actual accomplishments. But the amazinglycomplex operation was carried out with aspeed and secrecy unheard of today. Engineersdesigned huge buildings at Hanford to producebomb-size quantities of plutonium, a massivescale-up from laboratory work that had producedthe element in amounts too small to be seeneven under a microscope. In just two years, thefarming community became the world’s rstplutonium factory. On August 9, 1945, when the“Fat Man” fell on Nagasaki, Hanford workersunderstood their part in changing the world.Yet even after the war ended, nuclear testingcontinued, profoundly impacting the peopleof the Marshall Islands. Hill Williams offersscientic explanations and his own reminiscences
as he traces Hanford’s role in the story of theplutonium bomb.
Hill Williams was reared in Pasco, Washington. He is aformer Seattle Times science writer and the award-winning author of the WSU Press bestseller, The RestlessNorthwest.
