Members of Olympia Port Militarization Resistance say that John J. Towery posed as an anarchist and took part in the antiwar group’s activities from 2007 until last month. Towery, a member of “Fort Lewis Force Protection,” in an e-mail that was obtained by the antiwar group in March. OlyPMR member Brendan Maslauskas Dunn said in an interview Monday that he received a copy of the e-mail from the city of Olympia in response to a public records request asking for any information the city had about “anarchists, anarchy, anarchism, SDS (Students for a Democratic Society), or Industrial Workers of the World.” OlyPMR is opposed to the war in Iraq, and since 2006, the group has staged protests at Washington ports seeking to block Fort Lewis from loading or unloading military cargo used in Iraq. The Olympian obtained a copy of the e-mail identifying Towery as a member of “Fort Lewis Force Protection” from Dunn on Monday. The e-mail included a Fort Lewis phone number and a military e-mail address. OlyPMR member Drew Hendricks said that after looking at the e-mail, he checked a voter registration database to find out where Towery lives. After that, PMR members conducted surveillance of Towery’s Spanaway residence and of the vehicles driven by Towery. That confirmed that Towery had taken part in the antiwar group’s activities using the name “John Jacob,” Hendricks said. Dunn said he considered the man whom he knew as John Jacob as a fellow anarchist, and a compassionate and generous friend. Dunn said that when he met John Jacob in 2007, “he said he was an anarchist, he said he hung out with anarchists all the time.” Dunn said the man he knew as Jacob was active with other anti-war organizations in addition to OlyPMR. Towery was one of several OlyPMR listserv administrators that had control over the dissemination of OlyPMR’s electronic communications. Dunn said that during a private meeting with Towery last week, Towery admitted that he spied on OlyPMR while posing as one of its members, but he said that no one paid him and that he didn’t report to the military. Towery could not be reached for comment Monday. Fort Lewis spokesman Joseph Piek confirmed Monday that Towery is a civilian employed at Fort Lewis. “Mr. John Towery performs sensitive work within the installation law enforcement community, and it would not be appropriate for him to discuss his duties with the media,” Piek wrote in an e-mail to The Olympian. Piek added in the e-mail that Fort Lewis is aware of the claim against Towery, and that Fort Lewis is

This is the primary email showing the routing of the 'burn notice' for John Jacob Towery, a US Army employee who for more than two years pretended to be an Anarchist in Tacoma and Olympia Washington. The person who is sending the primary notice (Doug Larm) is married to the person in charge of military police at Madigan Army Medical Center, on the same base (JBLM) as John Towery. She and Doug Larm were both in the extended email network of which Towery and his supposed civilian 'handler' Chris Adamson were a part.

OLYMPIA – Fort Lewis plans an inquiry into claims by members of an Olympia antiwar group that acivilian employee of the fort infiltrated and spied on the group for nearly two years.Members of Olympia Port Militarization Resistance say that John J. investigating.“To ensure all regulatory guidelines were followed, the command has decided that an inquiry is prudent, and an officer is being appointed to conduct the inquiry,” according to Piek’s e-mail. “In the meantime,we cannot provide any information while the inquiry is under way.”Hendricks said the information Towery had access to while acting as an OlyPMR member could havebeen used to sabotage the organization.“He knew where people lived, he knew how people operated, he knew what people’s phone numberswere,” Hendricks said.Since 2006, OlyPMR has tried to block military cargo from Fort Lewis from entering or leaving publicports in Washington. During OlyPMR protests in November 2007, Olympia police sprayed protesters withpepper-spray and struck them with batons.During those protests, OlyPMR members stood in front of moving military vehicles and formed humanblockades at the port to prevent the military equipment from returning to Fort Lewis from Iraq.Last week, Hendricks posted on OlyBlog a link to an article on seattle.indymedia.org identifying Toweryas a Fort Lewis employee, along with Towery’s photo. Towery has been removed from his former roleas an administrator for OlyPMR’s listserv, according to the article.Jeremy Pawloski: [email protected] published: July 28th, 2009 12:15 AM (PDT)

>>>>>>>>>>>INDYMEDIA – ArticleSpy for the US Military Exposed: Spent Last Two Years Spying on Activistsauthor: MaslauskasJul 27, 2009 17:21Spy for the US Military Exposed: Spent Last Two Years Spying on Activists“John Jacob” was an activist well liked by many in Tacoma and Olympia, WA. He was active in the anti-war and anarchist communities in both towns. He did extensive work with the group Port MilitarizationResistance (PMR) which blocks military shipments to and from Iraq and Afghanistan through Northwestports. He went to numerous Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) events and actions, wasinterested in starting a chapter or Movement for a Democratic Society, worked closely with IraqVeterans Against the War, but spent most of his time with anarchists. Aside from attending meetings, events and actions organized by activists, he spent much personal and leisure time with otheranarchists in the area.

But some recent records requests done through the City of Olympia, asking the City for any informationon anarchists/anarchism/anarchy, SDS and the radical union Industrial Workers of the World, surfacedan email from a John J Towery II from Fort Lewis Force Protection with a daily force protection updatefor Fort Lewis. Interested in this email and the name attached to it, several activists did some researchthat eventually confirmed the identity of “John Jacob” as John J Towery II.

Two anarchists met with John Towery after this information was confirmed. By his own admission, JohnTowery spent the past two years spying on anarchists, Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans, SDSers andanti-war activists in Tacoma, Olympia and the Pacific Northwest. He admitted that he reported to anintelligence network that included county sheriffs from Pierce, Thurston and other WA counties, municipal police agencies from Tacoma, Olympia, Seattle and elsewhere, WA State Police, the US Army,FBI, Homeland Security, Joint Terrorism Task Force, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)Agency among other agencies.

John Towery further admitted he passed information on to the above listed network of authorities aboutthe activities of anarchists and PMR activists. He admitted that the Tacoma Police placed a hiddencamera on a utility pole across the street from the anarchist social space Pitchpipe Infoshop forsurveillance purposes. John Towery mentioned that the Olympia and Tacoma police were both planningon raiding the Pitchpipe Infoshop and an activist house in Olympia and he claimed that they hadrepeatedly approached him for any information that would give them a green light to raid the houses. He also claimed to have knowledge of other informants that were sent to spy on Port MilitarizationResistance and anarchists in Olympia, but refused to reveal their identities.

In his role as an administrator of the PMR listserve, John Towery had the email addresses of all

Page 3: WSP Routes the Burn Notice for the John Towery Olympian Story July 2009

subscribers, and the names of most persons involved with the organization. He had an intimateknowledge of how organizations in the activist community operated, how and when actions wereplanned and the beliefs, politics and personal matters of many activists.

The records requests that leaked out John Towery’s name also leaked out information that ThomasGlapion from the 305th SFS/S2 based out of McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey was investigatingactivities of SDS, PMR and “other left wing anti war groups”. Other agencies involved with intelligencegathering and surveillance of Olympia SDS in particular and Olympia activists in general include theCoast Guard (where there is an informant spying on activists according to one record) and US CapitolPolice.

Attorney Larry Hildes of the National Lawyers Guild has made numerous attempts to get informationfrom the military and federal agencies for court cases and civil suits connected to the port protests, onlyto run into the repeated refusal of Brian Kipnis from the US Attorney’s Office in Seattle to give thisinformation to Hildes and other defense attorneys. Kipnis explicitly told the US Army not to giveinformation to Hildes and others. Kipnis is also the same lawyer that prosecuted Lt. Ehren Watada andwas involved with a number of Guantanamo cases. This information is perhaps the beginning of a largernetwork of surveillance across the nation.
