the battle in Hampton Roads. Webb was described as having been slightly wounded in this battle. By the end of 1862 William A. Webb was at Charleston Station and was made the commander of the “Special Expedition,” a squadron of small boats. They were stationed behind Fort Sumter to protect the area from Union ships. The small ships were armed with spar torpedoes. Later, Webb was put in command of the ironclad Atlanta. It ran aground during an engagement and was captured on June 17, 1863. The Atlanta became the first ironclad to surrender to the Union. Webb was taken prisoner and held at Fort Warren in Boston. Up to 165 sailors were taken prisoner with Webb and he faced much criticism for his failure of command. In 1864 he was given parole and was freed in a prison exchange at Cox’s Wharf, Virginia. He quickly went back to action as commander of the CSS Richmond. However, in December of 1864, he left his command and the Confederacy due to declining health. In 1865 he traveled to London, England and while there took the Oath of Allegiance before the U.S. Consul. He went back to Virginia, and after the close of the war, requested a pardon from President Andrew Johnson, which was granted. William A. Webb died December 1, 1881. Iowa

History of Union County, Iowa George A. Ide, 1908 C. G. Webb C. G. Webb, who follows farming on section 22, Union township, has spent his entire life in Iowa, his birth having occurred in Keokuk county on the 31st of March, 1861. His father, John Webb, was a native of Tennessee, in which state he was reared. When a young man he removed northward to Springfield, Illinois, where he engaged in farming and in Sangamon county was married to Miss Susan Taylor, a native of that county. Following their marriage they left Illinois and went to Keokuk county, Iowa, in 1844. There the father secured land and engaged in farming for a time, while later he conducted a store and shipped stock for several years. In 1880 he arrived in Union county, settling in Sand Creek township, where he developed a far of eighty acres, afterward adding to his original holdings until he had one hundred and twenty acres, still in possession of his family. In his later years he lived retired in Afton, enjoying then a well earned rest up to the time of his death, which occurred in 1898 when he was seventy eight years of age. His widow still survives and is now making her home with her son, C. G. Webb, at the ripe old age of eighty-five years. Their family numbered twelve children, of whom eight reached adult age. C. G. Webb spent his youth as a farm lad, his time being divided between the acquirement of an education, the enjoyment of the pleasures of the playground and assistance rendered his father. He remained at home up to the time of his marriage, which important event in his life was celebrated January 25, 1883, the lady of his choice being Miss Anna K. Jackson, a native of Ohio and a daughter of Asa Jackson who came to Iowa in 1877. They have had no children of their own but have reared a child of Mrs. Webb’s brother.

Following his marriage Mr. Webb engaged in the cultivation of a rented farm for several years. He has been a resident of this county since 1880, when he came with his parents and in the intervening period has contributed in substantial measure to the agricultural development. After cultivating rented land for some time he invested his savings in one hundred and ten acres of land in Sand Creek township. This he improved, erecting theron a good dwelling and making the place his home for six years, after which he sold out and took up his abode in Creston. A year later, however, he purchased forty acres of land in Highland township which he also improved, and he likewise owned two town properties in Creston. His next purchase made him owner of one hundred and twenty acres of land in Sand Creek township. This he brought under a high state of cultivation and made it his place of residence for four years, after which he sold that property and accepted the position of manager of the county poor farm, to which he was appointed by the board of supervisors. For four years he remained in charge, during which time he made some good improvements there, while his record as an official was most commendable. From that place he removed to his present farm in 1902, becoming owner of eighty acres. He has since added forty acres to the original purchase and the present farm includes the old fair grounds. Here he has built a tow-story modern residence equipped with furnace, bathroom and other up-to-date conveniences and accessories. He has good barns and substantial outbuildings on his place and in fact the farm presents an excellent appearance, its many improvements and richly cultivated fields forming an attractive feature in the landscape. For nine years he has been engaged successfully and extensively n raising fine Percheron and English Shire horses, has two good stallions and makes exhibits of his stock at the county fairs, where he has won various premiums. His home is pleasantly and conveniently located within a mile of Afton and is superior to the great majority of farms, its neat and well kept appearance indicated his careful management and marked business ability. Mr. Webb has been a life-long democrat where national issues are involved but casts an independent local ballot. He is a Master Mason, belonging to the blue lodge at Afton, and both he and his wife are connected with the Eastern Star. They attend the Presbyterian church and are highly esteemed in this part of the county, having a host of warm friends. Mr. Webb, during the twenty-eight years of his residence here, has contributed in substantial measure to the general progress, especially along agricultural lines, having improved four different places. He started out in business life empty-handed but soon came to recognize the fact that energy and determination are the basis of success and upon this foundation he has built his prosperity.” 1860 Iowa Census Benton Name Born Age Spouse Alexander Webb KY 30 Anna E. Century Review, 1805-1905, Maury County, Tennessee D. P. Robbins, 1906 Dr. W. R. Webb, born at F. Donelson, March 1871, is a son of Rev. T. O. Webb, a C. P. preacher. His mother was Melvina [Wrenn] Webb. Dr. Webb graduated from the University of Nashville, March, 1900, locating here in Oct, 01. The Dr. has a sister, Lulu Webb, at home, and brother, Rev. B. Wrenn Webb, at Sherman, Texas. A History of Hickman County, Tennessee W. Jerome D. Spence, 1900 2nd District “…Farther down the creek, from 1812 to 1815, at what was afterwards known as the “Jack Tarkington place,” lived Elizabeth Berry, the widow Humphry Byron Berry, who died in Maryland. She came here with her father, William Tyler, father of Wat and Parker Tyler. Her sons were William Tyler Berry and Ferdinand Berry. The former went to Nashville, where he became a prominent citizen; the later, to Memphis where he attained equal prominence. Mrs. Berry married John L. Webb of Williamsport at which place they both died. They were buried in the graveyard on the “Jack Tarkington place…” 3rd District “As early as 1815 Joel Pugh had located at the Grimes place, near Shady Grove. He was born in Kentucky, and came to Mill Creek in 1810. Here George Pugh was born on May 12, 1912. Other children were Sally [born on September 15, 1815], who married Henry Cummins; Jane [born on March 20, 1818], who married Joseph Webb, of the Seventh District; John W. [born on April 11, 1820]; and Mary Melissa [born on May 12, 1825], who married M. H. Puckett, who was at one time County Court Clerk of this county…” 5th District “…Abner Ponder, the builder of Ponder’s Inn, was the father of several children, some of whom were: Madison, Archibald, Penn, Abner, and Clarissa. The latter was born on March 15, 1813. She married Leroy Perkins, the ceremony being performed by Daniel White, a Primitive Baptist, who preached often at the head of Bear Creek between 1825 and 1830. After the death of Perkins she married Joseph Webb, of the Seventh District. At the age of eighty-four her mind was still vigorous, and she talked entertainingly of how she and her little brother watched their father’s sheep as they grazed upon the luxuriant grass of “The Barrens…” 6th District “On a tombstone here is this inscription: “W. T. Easley, born October 4, 1838; died December 26, 1870.” Emily Easley, his wife, was a daughter of Hardy Petty. She was born on November 25, 1843, and died on March 23, 1882. The tragic death of W. T. Easley is yet well remembered. On the day of his death he was the guest of Joseph Webb, who lived on Pine River below Vernon. With his uncles, J. T. and D. T. Webb, he was engaged in a deer chase. While they were galloping through the woods a limb struck D. T. Webb’s gun, causing a discharge. The contents of the gun struck Easley, killing him. Easley was a son of Solomon Jones Easley, son of Millington Easley.” 7th District “In 1806 Robert Bowen, father of Robert and Charles Bowen, located on Pine River. Charles Bowen bought a large tract of land near what is now known as the “Hassell place” from Mrs. Orlean Smith, in whose name 640 acres of land had been entered in 1806. Charles Bowen lived on the east side of the river; Robert Bowen, on the west, between the places where David and Thomas Webb now lived. The heirs of Robert Bowen sold these lands to William II Carothers, who in 1845 erected a cotton gin at the Thomas Webb place…”

“…Joseph Webb, who was born in York County, S.C., in March 1797, came to Cathey’s Creek, in Maury County, and then to Hickman County, where he married Elizabeth Carothers, a sister of William H. Carothers. He settled on the Smith lands. His house being on the Reynoldsburg road, and he the most hospitable of hosts, his became one of the most popular of the wayside inns along this road. Here was the scene of a stirring incident in the winter of 1863. A troop of Federal cavalry was n the county capturing Confederate soldiers at home on furloughs. They pretended, however, to be in search of the guerilla bands of Henon Cross, Duval McNairy, and James McLaughlin. On the day referred to they had captured Capt. John H. Coleman, Willis Turner, and others, and had stopped at “Uncle Joe” Webb’s to spend the night. Just about dusk, and while the soldiers and their prisoners were scattered about the yard, the hurrying of hoofs was heard just down the road, and a lone horseman galloped to the front gate about thirty feet away. He called out a demand for an immediate surrender and fired his revolver rapidly into the crow. Before the one hundred men had recovered from the disorder into which one man had thrown them, James McLaughlin, who had encountered odds of one hundred to one in an in an attempt to assist the prisoners to escape, had disappeared. Evidences of this daring dash may yet be seen in the form of bullets from McLaughlin’s pistol embedded in the wall of the house. After McLaughlin had gone his way in safety, one of the gallant Federals retrieved the fortunes of the day by sending a musket ball through both the arms of Captain Coleman, a defenseless prisoner, who was making no attempt to escape…” 12th District “Robertson Whitesides, who was born in 1800, came from South Carolina to Maury County, and from Maury County to Swan Creek, in 1825. He died here in 1885…He married Sarah, a sister of Joseph Webb, of Pine River, and was the father of Pleasant, Luther and Lafayette Whitesides…” 13th District “John Wesley Webb, who was born in North Carolina on January 14, 1812, came to this district in 1840 and settled where his son, Charles S. Webb, now lives. Charles S. Webb was born here on March 9, 1847…”

Wisconsin Dodge County, Wisconsin, past and present Homer Bishop Hubbell, 1913 Enoch P. Webb, M. D. Dr. Enoch P. Webb has been practicing medicine in Beaver Dam since 1897 with gratifying and well deserved success. He was born on February 4, 1871, in Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin. His parents were William and Hephzibah [Palmer] Webb, the former a native of Genesee county, New York, and the latter of New Brunswick. The father was born February 24, 1819, and settled in Adams county, Wisconsin, where he remained for several years before he went to Fond du Lac county. He had been a school teacher in Canada for eight years prior to his removal west but abandoned that line of occupation in order to engage in the mercantile business which was a profitable source of income to him for twenty-five years. In 1889 he bought land in Beaver Dam in the outskirts of the town. He was a republican in his political views and served for several years as town clerk. He died on March 10, 1904. His wife is still living and makes her home with her son, Enoch P. Webb. Dr. Webb was educated in the public schools and was graduated from Wayland Academy in 1892. He received his medical instruction in Rush Medical College in Chicago, obtaining his degree in 1897. He located immediately for practice in Beaver Dam, establishing his office here on June 1, 1897. He has met with increasing and gratifying success and has built up a large and growing practice. He is thoroughly and efficiently equipped in all the modern developments of the medical science and is an able physician. On the 18th of May, 1904, Dr. Webb was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Palmer, whose birth occurred on the 11th of March 1880. She is a daughter of Edwin C. Palmer. Dr. Webb is independent in politics. He served from 1898 to 1899 as city physician and did able and constructive work in this capacity. He is interested in the cause of education and was school commissioner for two years. He affiliates with the Baptist church. His practice is carried on carefully and scientifically and is increasing every year. He keeps in touch with developments and discoveries in the world of medical science and interchanges thoughts and ideas along these subjects with his colleagues as member of the Dodge County and Wisconsin Medical Societies and American Medical Association. Dr. Webb is a physician of the present-day school, conscientious and thoroughly conversant with the many intricate details connected with his profession.
