Once upon a time there was a grasshopper and an ant.
![Page 3: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
They lived in a wonderful meadow.
![Page 4: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Each summer morning, Grasshopper climbed up her blade of grass.
![Page 5: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Once at the top, she started to sing.
![Page 6: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Her singing was fantastic. She sung with her legs, rubbing them together to create beautiful music.
![Page 7: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Grasshopper sang all through the long summer days.
![Page 8: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Lots of creatures stopped to listen.
![Page 9: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Meanwhile, Ant was busy all summer.
![Page 10: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
She collected food and rolled it back to her little house in the leaves.
![Page 11: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Sometimes, when the sound of Grasshopper’s singing reached her, she paused.
![Page 12: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
But then she told herself to keep going. “There’s work to be done!” she said.
![Page 13: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Slowly the summer passed. Now, some days were rainy.
![Page 14: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Grasshopper kept singing, although sometimes she moved down her blade of grass to be sheltered from the strong winds.
![Page 15: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Now all the creatures were finding their holes and their winter homes.
![Page 16: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
No-one stopped to listen to Grasshopper.
![Page 17: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The meadow was cold and empty.
![Page 18: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
One night, it snowed. There was ice on every blade of grass.
![Page 19: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Grasshopper was so cold and hungry. She knew she needed a house.
![Page 20: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Then she remembered Ant. Ant’s home would be warm and she would have food.
![Page 21: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Grasshopper hurried to Ant’s house. She knocked on the door.
![Page 22: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Ant came to the door.
![Page 23: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
“Please Ant, I am so cold and hungry. I will die out here,” pleaded Grasshopper. “Please may I come and shelter in your house.”
![Page 24: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Ant looked at Grasshopper. “All summer long I worked hard,” she said.
“I collected food and stored it.”
![Page 25: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Grasshopper stared at Ant. But Ant went on talking. “I made my home nice for winter. What did you do
all summer, Grasshopper?”
![Page 26: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Grasshopper shivered. She was so cold.“I sang all summer,” she replied.
“You heard me. All the creatures heard me. I was singing.”
![Page 27: Written by Ruth Merttens Illustrated by Anne Holm Petersen… · /ay/ as ay, a-e, ai /ie/ as y, ie, i-e, i and igh /cw/ as qu/, /cs/ as x, /y/ as y /oa/ as ow, o, oa, oe and o-e /ooh](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070916/5fb6e46217eefe6637305e94/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Ant shook her head. “Okay,” she said. “You sang all summer,” she started to shut her door, “so sing now.”
