Final writing task: Advice for repeaters and successors – January 30, 2013
How does this work?
● The final exam for Writing IV calls for you to prepare, compose, and post advice for repeaters and successors. ○ This slideshow explains the exam, and
presents foci for preparing written advice. ■ You will need to post your advice in individual
comments on posts earmarked for them, on the Writing Studio Blog (WSBlog). ● You should post only once.
○ Please read all of these slides carefully and completely before you begin to write.
General instructions (1)

● Compose paragraph-length (multiple sentence) responses to at least the first three of the four items.
● Respond as completely and write as accurately as possible in the time allowed (one hour).
General instructions (2)
● Combine your responses in a short multi-paragraph essay.
● Finish your essay in time to double-check and correct both grammar and spelling, ○ before you post it.

Foci for Advice
● Realistic expectations can smooth the transition from Writing I-II (1st year) to Writing III-IV (2nd year).○ Think back to when you entered Writing III-
IV. Consider expectations you had – about both courses – that either matched what happened, or did not.■ Use your experience to predict in general, for
repeaters and successors, what to expect in the way of challenges and opportunities in 2nd year writing courses.
1. Predictions: Challenges and opportunities for learning
● Responding proactively to learning challenges takes forethought and gumption.○ Information and
suggestions from predecessors can help.■ "Forewarned is
forearmed" (Tucker, 1768, [n.p.]).
2. Advice re: Writing III
● Think back again to challenges you faced and opportunities you had in Writing III.○ What steps do you
suggest that students take in Writing III next year to:■ Meet similar
challenges, and■ Take full advantage
of available opportunities?
