How does it create tension?
Thinking about the flying start think about the question, write down three reason in the table beneath.
Why do we need these things in a suspense movie? What do they bring to it?
You are going to look at some SCENE GRABS and annotate thinking about how the different aspects add to the tension.
Roof is low, makes people claustrophobic
Cellar is unknown, makes it look like a stereotypical haunted house. It is also dark to look scary.
Spooky gaps of light to create eerie atmosphere
Close up of his face to show his reaction- very important
Face isn’t washed to show he hasn’t washed in a while so must mean he has had a hard time.

Annotating scene grabs
Using the example on the previous page- annotate the following two camera grabs with information how it builds tension.

Elizabethan Marriages and Weddings - Arranged Marriages
Just as today a woman's wedding was one of the most important days of her life. The major difference to Elizabethan wedding customs to a modern day Western marriage is that the woman had very little, if any, choice in who her husband might be. Elizabethan Women were subservient to men. They were dependent on their male relatives to support them. Elizabethan woman were raised to believe that they were inferior to men and that men knew better!
Disobedience was seen as a crime against their religion. Marriages were frequently arranged so that both families involved would benefit. Marriages would be arranged to bring prestige or wealth to the family - a surprising fact is that young men were treated in a similar way as to women. Many couples would meet for the very first time on their wedding day. This particular Elizabethan custom usually applied to the nobility but the married or religious life were the only real options for the Elizabethans ( a career for a woman was absolutely unheard of.) Regardless of their social standing women and men were expected to marry. Single women who were thought to be witches by their neighbours...
Based on the article, circle the four true statements.
A. Elizabethans did not have arranged marriagesB. Women had little choice in their husbandsC. Women were below menD. Women were not raised to believe they were inferior to menE. Marriages were arranged so only the male partner would benefitF. Marriages would bring wealth to the familyG. Many couples would meet for the first time on their wedding dayH. Single women were though to be angels by neighbours
