DIRECT SPEECH

A. Speakers

When we use the actual words said by a speaker we enclose them

using quotation marks. Note the punctuation used in the samplesbelow.

Speaker First• Amanda said, “My budgie loves singing.”

• Alfred shouted, “Look out!”

• Amy asked, “May I have another?”

Speaker Last •  “My budgie loves singing,” said Amanda.

•  “Look out!” shouted Alfred.•  “May I have another?” asked Amy.

Broken Quotation•  “May I,” asked Amy, “have another?”

B. Titles within Quotations

When a speaker includes the name of a book, film, etc., these must

be enclosed in single quotation marks. Single quotation marksshould be used alternatively in such cases.

e.g. “I have found the book ‘How to Sit on a Chair’ very interesting,” mused Ronny.

C. Paragraphing with Speakers

Whenever a new speaker talks in a dialogue a new line should bestarted. Remember – a new speaker, a new line!

Recounts 

The following story is an example of the writing category known as recount .A recount  is a piece of writing that tells of a series of events in the order in

which they occurred. Recounts are commonly used in news reports on radio,television or in newspapers.

The text in a recount is structured in a special way. The orientation sets the

scene by telling who (the people written about), when (when the events tookplace), where (the setting), and what (some information on the subject that

is to be written about).

The events section is the main part of a recount. It is in this part that thewriter tells what happened and the order in which it happened. A recount

ends with a concluding statement containing an evaluative comment or

summary. Keep these things in mind when you write a recount.

Narratives

The passage below is an example of the writing category known as

narrative. Many stories that you read for enjoyment are narratives.A narrative should contain the following parts:

1. Orientation - sets the scene and introduces some of the maincharacters. It tells us who, where, and when.

2. Sequence of events 3. Complication - an unforeseeable problem that needs solving (this

is what makes a narrative interesting to readers).
