Fitou Origines, Domaine Bertrand-Bergé 2018From the Languedoc-Roussillon and a top producer with a reputation for making wines with finesse in a land famous for its robust reds. Château de La Dauphine, Fronsac 2014This lovely claret is made with 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc, and its deep red colour, perfumed nose of violets and cloves, and plenty of plush, vibrant black-fruit character will give much pleasure. Chianti Rufina Riserva, Frascole 2016From this great property’s highest, stoniest vineyard and a great vintage, giving an intense, perfumed Chianti with remarkable complexity. Its floral, red berry and leather notes, well-balanced firm tannins and a long refreshing finish would be heavenly with food; try a rich ragù or wild mushroom risotto. Pauillac 2011From one of Pauillac’s best-known properties (a condition of securing it at this price means we can’t reveal which!), this delicious claret is concentrated and classic, with well-integrated tannins and great length. Châteauneuf-du-Pape Mourre des Perdrix, Domaine de Charbonnière 2015Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and this, from a vineyard just below the more famous La Crau, is a great success in 2015. The mourvèdre grape plays a big part here, accounting for nearly 20% of the blend, and its characteristic warmth and depth adds to the wine’s appeal. El Sacramento, Rioja 2014Stunning, single-vineyard Rioja from a property shaking up the scene. The vineyard is ancient (first planted in the 17th century), but the winemaking is modern thanks to talented Jesús Madrazo, who left famous Contino to make El Sacramento. Bohórquez Reserva, Ribera del Duero 2010Our Spain buyer was ‘stopped in his tracks’ by this wine from a notable estate in the famous Ribera del Duero region. Volnay Premier Cru Clos de la Barre, Jadot 2011A bottle of fine red Burgundy is always something special, and this one from the Jadot stable is showing some of the mellow maturity that comes with some time in bottle. Grosset Gaia Clare Valley 2013Produced in tiny quantities, this is a rare treat and something of an Aussie classic from Grosset. A particularly attractive gift, it can be enjoyed now after a little while in a decanter, or left to mature for a few more years and take on further cigar-like complexity.
