About Adventure CampAdventure Camp at Western Reserve Academy has just about everything! Fromenriching activities to sports to outdoor adventures, campers expressthemselves, explore their world and discover new interests. Campers make newfriends and try new things that allow them to broaden their horizons. Newcampers will be amazed at the number of activities they will experience in one week.

During each session, every camper will do the following:

w Choose two Enriching Adventures, each meeting for four, 50-minutesessions w Pick one Sporting Adventure that meets for three, 60-minute sessionsw Mountain bike through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park w Kayak one of the most beautiful waterways in Northeast Ohiow Participate in traditional camp favorites such as capture the flag, swimming, camp competitions and so much more!

Although everybody knows what will happen during the course of a week, eachday is a surprise at Adventure Camp! The daily schedule is revealed as the dayunfolds so campers enjoy the activity of the moment instead of getting lost intomorrow’s adventures. At Adventure Camp, every day is a new adventure!

Adventure Campers make new discoveries and expand their creative potential through engaging activities. Each camperselects two enrichment offerings per session, and each activity meets four times during a one-week session.

Options for Sessions 1, 2 & 3

PHOTOGRAPHIC EFFECTS - Campers learn thefeatures of Google’s Picasa to manipulate their

own digital images into works of art. All campers takehome a disc with copies of their collection.

ROCKIN’ ROCKETS - After campers learn the physics of arocket launch, they build their own spacecrafts and watchthem soar into the sky.

LET’S GET CRAFTY - Mosaic masterpieces, styrofoamrobots and woven friendship bracelets are just some of theart projects campers create at Adventure Camp.

CREATIVE COOKING - WRA’sdining hall is home to kitchenadventures as campers preparetheir own pizzas with pizzazz,cupcake creations and otherdelicious dishes.

COMICAL THEATRICS - Improvisation skits such as the“Emotion Party” and classic bits including “Who’s on First”give campers opportunities to have fun while displayingtheir theatrical skills.

MAGICIANS IN TRAINING - Card tricks, disappearing coinsand sawing (paper) assistants in half are just some of theskills campers develop while training for the stage.

Options for Sessions 4, 5 & 6

T-SHIRT TIME - Classic tie-dyes and T-shirts displayingcampers’ computer-generated graphics will becomethe newest additions to their wardrobes.

WRA PRODUCTIONS - After developing a scriptand plot, campers use a digital video camera toproduce a group short film. Using iMovie,everyone edits the production that premiers at theclosing ceremonies. Campers take home DVDcopies of the movie.

LINE DANCING MANIA - Campers learn classics includingthe YMCA and Macarena, as well as newer favorites suchas the Cupid Shuffle and the Cha-Cha Slide.

CLAY WORKS - Using air-dry clay to mold original works ofart, ideas take shape in the ultimate hands-on activity.From dinosaurs to flowers to necklaces, campers’masterpieces are as unique as they are fun.

ADVENTURES IN SCIENCE - Models and basicexperiments teach campers scientific principles suchas propulsion, solar power, chemical reactions orconductivity.

ADVENTURE CAMP PAINTERS, INC. - While working in the studio and around WRA’s picturesque campus,campers’ imaginations are the inspiration for theirbrushes.

KayakingNot all of our adventureshappen on land! During eachsession, campers learn thefundamentals of kayakingfrom our well-trained staff.Counselors teach boatersafety and basic paddlingtechniques, and everyonediscovers the thrill of pilotinga vessel on the CuyahogaRiver.

Mountain BikingBumpy trails ahead! Bikers ofall skill levels enjoy trails thatare perfect and fun for eachcamper. The first day ofmountain biking involves ridinga local park trail. The CuyahogaValley National Park is the site foradditional journeys and greatscenery such as the impressiveBrandywine Falls or locks alongthe historic Ohio & Erie Canal.

Wilderness AdventuresAdventure Camp extends beyond WRA’s campus to surroundingparks and reserves. Everyone learns how to navigate some of thebest trails and waterways in Northeast Ohio while kayaking andmountain biking each session.

Every day is a new Adventure...

Sporting AdventuresWhether a camper chooses a personal favorite or decides totry something new, each activity provides a summer camptwist on a traditional sport. Everyone selects one sport persession that meets three times during a one-week session.

Optional Overnight AdventureIf you think camp is cool during the day, wait until you seehow awesome it is at night. Each session, campers have theoption to stay over Thursday night for a traditional eveningcamp experience. In addition to campfire songs, and ofcourse, s’mores, everyone takes in the beauty of thenighttime sky by visiting WRA’s Frost Observatory. State-of-the-art telescopes provide campers a close look at the stars,planets and other objects in the night sky. Staying overnightat Adventure Camp is an unforgettable experience your childwill talk about for years to come.

Rival AdventuresEach session, campers formtwo teams for our fun-packedCAMPetitions. Motivated byteam pride, campers face off ina combination of challengessuch as capture the counselor,swimming pool games, stealthe bacon, relay races, crabsoccer and so much more. TheCAMPetitions culminate withthe Adventure Battle - Capturethe Flag 2.0.

Adventure Camp was designed to provideuninterrupted fun for children. In our secureenvironment, campers are encouraged to trynew things outside of their comfort zones.Adventure Camp does not permit teasing, bullying, or hazing of any kind. We call it theAdventure Camp Promise, and we ask allcampers to sign the Promise. As a result, ourfriendly camp atmosphere provides a place forchildren to freely express their opinions andexplore the world in which they live, all whileexperiencing their own new adventures.

Camp FacilitiesAdventure Camp takes place on WRA’s boarding school campus. Asa result, campers take advantage of the same exceptional facilitiesused by students from around the world during the school year.From courts and fields to labs and studios, WRA provides the idealenvironment for campers to embark on new adventures.

Our 190-acre campus encompasses:w The 80,000-square-foot Murdough Athletic Center which

includes a 200-meter indoor track, 5 basketball courts, and a 6-lane swimming pool with a separate diving well

w 12 full-size athletic fieldsw 10-court tennis centerw Cross-country trailsw 3 baseball fieldsw Two- and three-dimensional studios with work stations for

painting and printing techniques and a production area for desktop publishing

w State-of-the art science labsw A 400-seat theater

Adventure Camp Staff We know a great staff is the key to creating an extraordinarysummer camp experience. Our counselors fuel the spirit ofAdventure Camp - this is what they love to do and it shows! Theyare college students or recent graduates who have an infinitepassion for working with children. Our maximum camper-to-staffratio of 5:1 ensures close supervision and helps every childdevelop connections with these fantastic role models.

Ensuring the well-being of our campers is our foremost priority.Each member of our staff undergoes comprehensive screening andpreparation, including AED, CPR, and First Aid training. Certifiedlifeguards supervise all water activities, and camp vehicles aredriven by Ohio Department of Education approved drivers.

Camp DiningCampers enjoy breakfast* and lunch inWRA’s Ellsworth Dining Hall. Meals areserved buffet style and offer an array ofchoices. Nutritious snacks are served duringmid-morning and afternoon breaks. Thedining hall staff can accommodate mostdietary needs - please contact us for specificrequests prior to enrolling.

*Campers can arrive between 7:45 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. for an optional breakfast. Everyoneshould be on campus by 8:30 a.m. for the startof camp activities.
