Brico WR Bridge Plug Introduction The Brico WR Bridge Plug combines the advantages of wireline setting with easy and reliable irretrievability. It is commonly used for zone or well isolation during Fracturing, Acidizing, Cement Squeezing, Testing or well head repair operations. This Bridge Plug may be run and set on wireline using a Baker E-4 Wireline Pressure Setting Assembly. It may also be run on tubing or endless tubing using a Hydraulic Setting Tool. The WR’s double acting slips securely anchor the Bridge Plug against pressure differentials from above or below. The three element pack off design ensures reliable sealing at high pressures and temperatures. The unique equalizing valve design allows any pressure differential to be equalized before the Retrieving Head is latched onto the plug. This feature is especially advantageous when retrieving the WR on endless tubing. The many advantages of this Bridge Plug include compact design, accurate setting depth, differential pressure rating of 10,000 PSI and a straight on and straight pull to release. Operation The WR Bridge Plug is connected to the Wireline (or Hydraulic) Setting Tool, run to required setting depth and set. The WR Retrieving Tool (Product 10-081) is used to retrieve the Bridge Plug. When using the tool on endless tubing, a Safety Sub (Product 20-032) must be used in conjunction with the Retrieving Head. The Retrieving Tool is lowered onto the Bridge Plug while circulating any sand or other debris off the plug. The Retrieving Head will open the valve, allowing any pressure differential to equalize. Continued downward movement will latch the Retrieving Head onto the Bridge Plug - upward motion releases the plug. The Retrieving Head may be disconnected from the Bridge Plug if necessary with approximately 8 to 10 turns of right hand rotation while holding a slight amount of tension.

Operation Procedure This tool is used to run and set, on tubing, coiled tubing or drill pipe, most packers which are normally set on wireline. It is especially useful in deviated wells where it is not practical to run the tools on wireline. The unique design of this tool allows additional piston sections to be added, lowering the required setting pressure. This feature can be a great cost saver for the operator, by allowing the use of available low pressure pumping units, such as a service rig pump rather than required the additional cost of a pump truck. This setting tool uses the same adapters for running as are used with an E-4 wireline setting tool. No balls or other devices are required to set this tool. The packer is run to depth, and the required amount of pressure is applied to the tubing to set the packer and shear off. The setting tool will automatically drain the tubing string as it is being pulled.

Setting Procedure: Using a Hydraulic Setting Tool

1. Screw sleeve adapter onto bottom of Hydraulic Setting Tool

2. Install set screws into sleeve adapter.

3. Screw setting sleeve onto sleeve adapter until the bottom of setting sleeve thread reach top of sleeve adapter’s thread. Make sure set screw is backed out of setting sleeve.

4. Tighten shear stud onto top of WR Bridge Plug. Consideration should be given as to amount of down force you will have when retrieving the Bridge Plug. Shear screws in valve sleeve determine amount of down force will be required to open the valve and allow pressure differential to equalize. The WR Bridge Plug will not release until the valve sleeve is opened. Each shear screw is 2000# of down force.

5. Tighten Bridge Plug to hydraulic setting tool.

6. Screw setting sleeve back down the sleeve adapter until sleeve comes in contact with the Bridge Plug.

7. Tighten the set screws on the setting sleeve.

8. Attach tool to tubing. Note how many pistons there are on the Hydraulic Setting Tool. This determines the amount of pressure it will require to set the Bridge Plug (see Piston Specifications Chart).

9. Run into wellbore to desired depth.

10. Pressure up on the tubing until pressure drops off to set the Bridge Plug

11. Pull Hydraulic Setting Tool adapter and sleeve from the wellbore.

12. A little bit of tension might be required to release the Hydraulic Setting Tool from the Bridge Plug.

Note: 1. When using coiled tubing, purging the tubing to remove debris from ID is recommended to prevent plugging

up the Hydraulic Setting Tool.

2. A Mechanical Collar Locator and Safety Shear Sub are recommended.

Setting Procedure: Using a Baker E4 Wireline Pressure Setting Tool

1. Screw sleeve adapter onto bottom of Baker E4 Wireline Pressure Setting Tool or equivalent.

2. Install set screws into sleeve adapter.

3. Screw setting sleeve onto sleeve adapter until the bottom of setting sleeve thread reach top of sleeve adapter’s thread. Make sure set screw is backed out of setting sleeve.

4. Tighten shear stud onto top of WR Bridge Plug. Consideration should be given as to amount of down force you will have when retrieving the Bridge Plug. Shear screws in valve sleeve determine amount of down force will be required to open the valve and allow pressure differential to equalize. The WR Bridge Plug will not release until the valve sleeve is opened. Each shear screw is 2000# of down force.

5. Tighten Bridge Plug to the Baker E4 Pressure Setting Tool.

6. Screw setting sleeve back down the sleeve adapter until sleeve comes in contact with the Bridge Plug.

7. Tighten the set screws on the setting sleeve.

8. Run into wellbore to desired depth and activate the Baker E4 Pressure Setting Tool to shear stud and set packer.

9. Pull the setting tool, adapter and sleeve from the wellbore.

Retrieving Procedure: Jointed Tubing

1. Install retrieving tool tubing. Make sure grapple is in tool;

2. Run into well, circulate sand and debris off WR Bridge Plug, then lower retrieving tool into plug;

3. Downward weight will allow the retrieving tool to shear the shear screws in valve sleeve, allowing valve to open and pressure differential to equalize. It will take 8000# or predetermined force (see setting procedure) on the valve sleeve to open valve.

NOTE: If valve sleeve is not opened, you cannot pull WR Bridge Plug.

4. Continued downward movement will latch retrieving tool onto the plug.

5. Pull tension into tubing to release plug. Allow a few minutes for elements to relax. NOTE: If necessary the retrieving tool may be disconnected from the bridge plug with 8 turns of clockwise rotation while holding a slight amount of tension.

Retrieving Procedure: Coil Tubing

1. When using coiled tubing for retrieval, a clean out run is recommended to remove sand and debris from around the valve sleeve of bridge plug. This will allow the valve to move down and open with minimal downward force equivalent to the shear pin value to open valve. Failure to do this will make it more difficult to retrieve the CW Bridge Plug as it prevents the force from getting to shear screws in the valve sleeve.

2. Install shear sub and retrieving tool to coiled tubing.

3. Run into wellbore.

4. Downward force or predetermined force (see setting procedures) must be applied to valve sleeve to open valve and allow pressure differential to equalize. NOTE: If valve sleeve is not opened, the WR Bridge Plug will not release.

5. Pull coil tubing into tension to release plug

6. Allow plug a few minutes to relax the elements, and pull out of wellbore. NOTE: Removing grapple from retrieving tool and running it into an open valve will allow pressure differential to equalize. Then replace grapple in retrieving tool and run into the top of the Bridge Plug and latch on to plug.

Assembly for the 2 3/8 WR Bridge Plug

1. Lubricate all o-rings.

2. Slide the main mandrel (23) over the inner mandrel (29).

3. Slide locking wedge (21) into locking wedge housing (20). Slide locking wedge housing (20) onto rubber mandrel (1)

4. Slide the rubber mandrel assembly over the top end of the main mandrel (23). Be careful that the locking wedge (21) does not engage the ratchet threads on the main mandrel (23). NOTE: It may be useful to place a bolt in the hole of the main mandrel (23) to prevent the ratchet from engaging. The bolt must be removed later on.

5. Insert the safety key (19) through the slots in the rubber mandrel (13), main mandrel (23) and inner mandrel (29).

6. Slide the gauge ring (18) onto the rubber mandrel (13) followed by element (15), spacer ring (16), element (17), spacer ring (16) and element (15).

7. Install o-rings (11 & 12) into the shear sub (8), screw the upper gauge ring (14) onto the shear sub (8) and tighten. Screw the shear sub assembly onto the rubber mandrel (13) and tighten.

8. Install the o-ring (6) into the valve sleeve (4). Slide the valve sleeve (4) onto the locking sleeve (7).

9. Install o-ring (9) into the locking sleeve (7). Tighten the locking sleeve (7) onto the main mandrel (23) (see note). Install the brass shear screws (10) into the shear sub (8). NOTE: DO NOT hold the main mandrel (23) by the ratchet threads when tightening.

10. Screw the latch sub (2) onto the inner mandrel (29) and install shear screws (3) into the valve sleeve (4).

11. Slide the upper cone (22) into the slip cage (27). Install set screw (24) thru slot of slip cage (27) and into upper cone (22). Install the slip springs (26) and slips (25) into the slip cage (27) and temporarily secure them with 10-24 screws.

12. Slide the slip cage assembly onto the main mandrel (23) and screw the upper cone (22) into the lower gauge ring (18) (see note). Line up screw holes with the groove in the locking wedge housing (20) and Install the brass shear screws (3) into the upper cone (22). NOTE: Make sure that the safety key (19) is centralized and does not interfere with the upper cone (22).

13. Snap the lower cone (28) onto the collet of the main mandrel (23). Install the set screws (24) through the slots in the slip cage (27) and into the lower cone (28).

14. Screw the mandrel cap (30) onto the inner mandrel (29). Place a backup wrench onto the latch sub (2) and tighten the mandrel cap (30). Screw the shear stud (1) into the latch sub (2).

Assembly for the 2 7/8, 3 1/2 & 4 WR Bridge Plug

1. Lubricate all o-rings.

2. Install o-ring (5) onto the inner mandrel (27). Slide the main mandrel (21) over the inner mandrel (27).

3. Slide locking wedge (18) into locking wedge housing (17). Slide locking wedge housing (17) onto rubber mandrel (11).

4. Slide the rubber mandrel assembly over the top end of the main mandrel (21). Be careful that the locking wedge (18) does not engage the ratchet threads on the main mandrel (21). NOTE: It may be useful to place a bolt in the hole of the main mandrel (21) to prevent the ratchet from engaging. The bolt must be removed later on.


6. Slide the gauge ring (12) or (16 for the 4” WR) onto the rubber mandrel (11) followed by element (13), spacer ring (14), element (15), spacer ring (14) and element (13).

7. Install o-rings (6 & 10) into the shear sub (8), screw the gauge ring (12) onto the shear sub (8) and tighten. Screw the shear sub assembly onto the rubber mandrel (11) and tighten.

8. Install the o-ring (6) into the valve sleeve (4). Slide the valve sleeve (4) onto the locking sleeve (7). Install o-ring (9) into the locking sleeve (7). Tighten the locking sleeve (7) onto the main mandrel (21) (see note). Install the brass shear screws (3) into the shear sub (8). NOTE: DO NOT hold the main mandrel (21) by the ratchet threads when tightening.

9. Screw the latch sub (2) onto the inner mandrel (27) and install shear screws (3) into the valve sleeve (4).

10. Slide the upper cone (20) into the slip cage (24). Install the slip springs (23) and slips (22) into the slip cage (24) and temporarily secure them with 10-24 screws. Slide the slip cage assembly onto the main mandrel (21) and screw the upper cone (20) into the gauge ring (12) or (16 for the 4” WR) (see note). Line up screw holes with the groove in the locking wedge housing (17) and Install the brass shear screws (19) into the upper cone (20). NOTE: Make sure that the safety key (16) is centralized and does not interfere with the upper cone (20).

11. 11. Snap the lower cone (25) onto the collet of the main mandrel (21). Install the set screws (25) through the slots in the slip cage (24) and into the lower cone (25).

12. Screw the mandrel cap (28) onto the inner mandrel (27). Place a backup wrench onto the latch sub (2) and tighten the mandrel cap (30). Screw the shear stud (1) into the latch sub (2).

ASSEMBLY for the 4 1/2, 5 and 6 5/8 WR Bridge Plug

1. Lubricate all o-rings

2. Install o-ring (4) onto the inner mandrel (26), slide the main mandrel (19) over the inner mandrel (26).

3. Screw locking wedge (18) into the rubber mandrel (11). Rotate the locking wedge (18) so that the slot is aligned with the two small holes in the rubber mandrel (11) and the locking wedge (18) is approximately centered on the thread (see diagram). Drive the spring pins (17) into the holes in the rubber mandrel (11) until they are flush.

4. Slide the rubber mandrel (11) over the main mandrel (19). Be careful that the locking wedge (18) does not engage the ratchet threads on the main mandrel (19).

NOTE: It may be useful to place a bolt in the hole of the main mandrel (19) to prevent the ratchet from engaging. The bolt must be removed later on.


6. Slide the upper gauge ring (12) onto the rubber mandrel (11) followed by element (13), spacer ring (14), element (15), spacer ring (14) and element (13).

7. 7. Install o-rings (5 & 9) (or 9 & 10 for sizes 5 1/2 to 5 3/4) into the shear sub (10), screw the upper gauge ring (12) onto the shear sub (10) and tighten. Screw the shear sub assembly onto the rubber mandrel (11) and tighten.

8. Install the o-ring (5) into the valve sleeve (3). Slide the valve sleeve (3) onto the locking sleeve (7) and install the brass shear screws (6) into the valve sleeve (3).

9. Install the o-ring (8) into the locking sleeve (7). Tighten the locking sleeve (7) onto the main mandrel (19) (see note). Install the brass shear screws (6) into the shear sub (10).

NOTE: DO NOT hold the main mandrel (19) by the ratchet threads when tightening.

10. Screw the latch sub (2) onto the inner mandrel (26).

11. Slide the upper cone (20) into the slip cage (23). Install the slip springs (22) and slips (21) into the slip cage (23) and temporarily secure them with 10-24 screws. Slide the slip cage assembly onto the main mandrel (19) and screw the upper cone (20) into the upper gauge ring (12) (see note). Install the brass shear screws (6) into the upper cone (20).

NOTE: Make sure that the safety key (16) is centralized and does not interfere with the upper cone (20).


13. Screw the mandrel cap (27) onto the inner mandrel (26). Place a backup wrench onto the latch sub (2) and tighten the mandrel cap. Screw the shear stud (1) into the latch sub (2).

11. Slide the upper cone (21) into the slip cage (24). Install the slip springs (23) and slips (22) into the slip cage (24) and temporarily secure them with 10-24 screws. Slide the slip cage assembly onto the main mandrel (20) and screw the upper cone (21) into the gauge ring (13) (see note). Install the brass shearscrews (6) into the upper cone (21).

6. Slide the lower gauge ring (16) onto the rubber mandrel (11) followed by element (13), spacer ring (14), element (15), spacer ring (14) and element (13).

7. Install o-rings (5 & 9) into the shear sub (10), screw the upper gauge ring (12) onto the shear sub (10) and tighten. Screw the shear sub assembly onto the rubber mandrel (11) and tighten.



NOTE: DO NOT hold the main mandrel (20) by the ratchet threads when tightening


11. Slide the upper cone (21) into the slip cage (24). Install the slip springs (23) and slips (22) into the slip cage (24) and temporarily secure them with 10-24 screws. Slide the slip cage assembly onto the main mandrel (20) and screw the upper cone (21) into the upper gauge ring (12) (see note). Install the brass shear screws (6) into the upper cone (21).


Snap the lower cone (26) onto the collet of the main mandrel (20). Install the set screws (25) through the slots in the slip cage (24) and into the lower cone (26).

Rotate the locking wedge (19) so that the slot is aligned with the two small holes in the rubber mandrel (12) and the locking wedge (19) is approximately centered on the thread (see diagram). Drive the spring pins (18) into the holes in the rubber mandrel (12) until they are flush;









10. Install o-ring (3) into the latch sub (2) and screw the latch sub (2) onto the inner mandrel (27).

11. Slide the upper cone (21) into the slip cage (24). Install the slip springs (23) and slips (22) into the slip cage (24) and temporarily secure them with 10-24 screws. Slide the slip cage assembly onto the main mandrel (20) and screw the upper cone (21) into the gauge ring (13) (see note). Install the brass shear screws (7) into the upper cone (21).

DISASSEMBLY: Using 4 1/2 as a reference

NOTE: This procedure is for the disassembly of a bridge plug that has been set and released.

Before disassembling the bridge plug, it is recommended that the inner mandrel (26) be pushed back up inside the tool. The collet on the locking sleeve (7) must be returned to its original position in the groove at the very top of the inner mandrel (26). To accomplish this, turn the bridge plug upside down, hold it in a vertical position and drop it onto a block of wood. Ensure that the valve sleeve (3) does not interfere with the collet fingers on the locking sleeve (7).

1. Clamp the bridge plug in a vise around the lower gauge ring (12). Unscrew the mandrel cap (27) from the inner mandrel (26). Remove the set screws (24) from the lower cone (25) and remove the lower cone (25) from the bridge plug.

2. Unscrew the upper cone (20) from the gauge ring (12). Slide the upper cone (20), slip cage (23), slips (21) and slip springs (22) off the bridge plug. Remove the slips (21) and upper cone (20) from the slip cage (23).

3. Unscrew the latch sub (2) from the inner mandrel (26). Remove the broken shear stud (1) from the latch sub (2).

4. Remove the valve sleeve (3) from the locking sleeve (7).

5. Unscrew the locking sleeve (7) from the main mandrel (19) (see note). Remove the locking sleeve (7) from the bridge plug.

NOTE: Do not place a wrench on the upper portion of the main mandrel (19) as this is a seal surface.

6. Unscrew the shear sub (10) from the rubber mandrel (11) and remove. Unscrew the upper gauge ring (12) from the shear sub (10). Slide the element (13 & 15), spacer rings (14) and gauge ring (12) from the rubber mandrel (11).

7. Remove the safety key (16) and slide the inner mandrel (26) out of the bridge plug.

8. Unscrew the rubber mandrel (11) from the main mandrel (19) (see note). Drive the spring pins (17) out of the rubber mandrel (11) and unscrew the locking wedge (18).

NOTE: The ratchet thread is left hand.

9. Remove all o-rings and broken shear screws from the parts.
