VAMPI'S SCARLET LETTERSMost of our readers praise the writing ofBruceJones on"Mute" and"Ephemeral. " Oth-ers are concerned about the handling ofVAMPI. Is she anti-heroine, an adventuress?

VAMPI: PEIMDY'S LAST BOWSeveral young men have disappeared andtheir bodies have been discovered at the bot-tom of the river. Adam knew it was more thanmurder. A life-sucking succubus was at work!

BRAIUCATELLhCOMIC BOOKSThere is little doubt that comics are failing,

but where can the blame be leveled? Also, can the comic fans save the industry? If

you want to do your part, read this now!

CHAIMGES The old neighborhood wasn'tthe same to Willie Thorns. Someone had madechanges. They were always making changes. They even tried to change Willie and laugh-ed when he wouldn't change. Willie'd fix 'em!

FUNERAL DAY The citizens of LastHope, Kansas were down to about thirty andthey couldn't survive. Only Lawrence Long-handle was able to provide what they neededevery Funeral Day. They despised him for it!

FORCE FEED Michael Lee SebastianWas a mass murderer running from the law.Escape seemed impossible except in someoneelse's body, like maybe . . . Jack the Ripper! The body finally chosen was a humdinger!

THE PLOT'S THE THING Bernardwas one of the best writers Whywald Comicsever had. One reason, because he researchedhis stories so well. Even the murder tales! Then fate gave him one plot twist too many.

THE BEAST IS YET TO COMEThe world, Rego, meant nothing to Pak. It

sent its monsters to destroy him and Pak de-feated them all. But Pak had one weaknessand Rego knew it was of his own creation! ^

VAMPIRELLA #56 is oneof the best books I've

read and "Mute" and "TheFreelancer" are the best

stories in it. I would surehate to be in Turp's place, be-

ing so shy and loving a girl

that much. If I was locked upin a coffin with a dead girl

like he was. I'd be a mute too.

In "The Freelancer." peoplegambled their lives for moneyand I thought it was stupid.

I thought about it all night. In

the morning, at school. I show-ed this book to my friend

Eddie. After we did our home-work, his father came to takehim home, but Eddie wouldn'tleave till he'd finished thebook.

I've only been a VAMPIreader about four weeks.Even though I've got old VAM-PIRELLAS and other scarybooks in my collection, beforethis I just looked at the pic-

tures.

KEVIN KUROPATAHouston, Tex.

VAMPIRELLA #56 was,generally speaking, a fine is-

sue ... not one really badstory in the lot. The BruceJones offerings were amongthe best stories Warren haspublished this year.Ramon Torrents classy art

was the salvation of "Caval-cade of Monsters." GerryBoudreau's resorting to silly

names (Penelope Peach? Bus-ter Gutman?) spoiled whatwas otherwise a good, if some-what predictable, script.

The final story, "Skruffy'sGargoyles," was not as goodas it could have been, due to

the fact that Bill DuBay didn't

quit while he was ahead. Thelast page is anticlimatic andunnecessarily maudlin.Of course the principal at-

traction must be the latest ad-venture of the lady vampireherself. All things considered,it was a good one this time.

But this marked the thirdtime in four issues that theheroine was overcome byknockout fumes. I think thetime has come to discard this

device for a few years. VAMPImight become addicted! My only major complaint

must be the brevity; thingswere just getting interesting

when Adam's sudden arrival

came like a splash of cold wa-ter, inadequately preparedfor. How did Adam find VAMPIso quickly?

Bill DuBay's dialogue, es-

pecially the VAMPI/ Adamexchanges, continues the re-

freshingly mature approachthat's been adopted towardtheir relationship. Jose Gon-zalez art was among his best,

if not quite as subtle as his

work on "Human Market-place."

BRIAN CADEN4 Cinncinnati, Oh.

After a brief improvementin plot lines. VAMPI is againinvolved with dead people.Come on. gang, is that all

your writers can think of?

Here we have one of the great-est characters in comics andthe plots are similar, repi-titious.

Think about it.

EDWARD WOJCIKDetroit, Mich.

"Magnificent Ephemeral"was full of the deft character-ization Bruce Jones does sowell. The use of letters, diaryand panel dialogue providedan effective framework andtold the story most dramatic-ally. He built up Scott Westly'sobsession so convincinglythat the wonderfully bizarredouble suicide was perfectlybelievable.

Significantly, the endingwas nocheap shot at the read-er, but a well-integratedshocker.Cudos to Jones for his fine

writing. Of course, the alwaysmasterful Ramon Torrentsartwork enhanced the taleimmensely.Whose idea was it to use

film-frame panels? It was anice touch. The result was an excellent

graphic story on all counts.

EDO'REILLEYAda, Ohio

mh The film-frame layout^Lik wasBruce'sidea.Ed and^M we agree ... it was most

effective. We're glad youenjoyed it!

I don't know what the ma-jority of readers thought of

VAMPI #47, but to me. it wasthe starting point of the seriesdownhill progression.

I had always thought of

VAMPI as an adventuress, not an anti-hero. I let thingsrun their course, instead of

protesting the butchering of

a once fine character. Theselatest atrocities are nearlyunmentionable:

In #56. she was ready tokill the doctor instead of turn-ing him over to the authorities. When Adam stops her, shesays "you never let me haveany fun!"Worse, our heroine is depict-

ed either in a sexy pose, orhelpless before some men-ace. The latter we know is nottrue and the former is dis-

gusting. My God, she lookslike a whore! And the once-good charac-

terization between VAMPIand Adam is gone, too. It

seems all Adam is after any-more is a good lay and Vampiis just a human decoy, gettingherself caught by forceswhich, in earlier years, would've been no sweat.

CLARK DISSMEYERFullerton, Neb.

VAMPIRELLA #57 was ex-cellent! Your contents-pagecapsule description praisingthe cover, was putting it mild-ly.

"City of Ghosts" had a fineplot. Bringing back VAMPI'slost love. Tristan, was a goodidea.

A few suggestions:Put more Jose Gonzalez

drawings of VAMPI on theinside front cover of VAMPI-RELLA. A portrait of VAMPIshould open the mag, suchas the superb one in #56.On the back cover a previewpage is appropriate.

I think two-pages of ScarletLetters would give more read-ers a chance to see their let-

ters printed. Please makethis possible.VAMPI covers should only

be done by Enrich!

JOHN GENTILEJersey City, N.J.

This is my first time writing

to a magazine, but I have to

rave about VAMPIRELLA #56.Bill DuBay's "Skruffy's

Gargoyles" was probably thebest story I've ever read in a

Warren magazine, because of

the ending. Usually the de-mons and devils capture thehero, but here God won!The brief history of the gar-

goyle added zest to the story.

The "Headless Horseman"was unusually delightful.

Also I loved Jose Gonzalezart.

Bruce Jones' stories wereabove average. "The Free-lancer" was quite confusingbut "Mute" was marvelous.

I can't say too much for

"Cavalcade of Monsters"...the ending was very disap-pointing. I expected morefrom Gerry Boudreau.

GARYROWELLPortland, Ore.

The Roger McKenzie/JoseGonzalez effort on "City of

Ghosts" was a triumph! Prob-ably some of Gonzalez' bestartwork to date, it combinedin a story that effectively

blended illusion with reality.

A haunted town seeking com-pany is a refreshingly newconcept. There's been a recent trend

in the series that disturbsme. however:Whatever became of VAM-

PI's other powers, besides herability to alter shape? There'sbeen little recent use of hertalents of telepathy or hyp-notism, or her alien strengthsand reflexes? I'm not advo-cating making her a ModestyBlaise type character, but I

would like to see the old pow-ers back again.

NORMAN DAVISONLoring, Ma.

JP> Then you'll enjoy the%A upcoming trilogy pitting

%> VAMPI against theBlood Red Queen of Hearts(from VAMPIRELLA #49). It

begins next issue . . . and it's

a knockout!

Issue #56 of VAMPIRELLAwas a magazine of paradoxes. The VAMPI story was good,

yet do I detect a sudden lean-ing toward realistic plots,

away from the occult? I mustsay I find the exploits of a fe-

male vampire in a real worldhard to swallow. VAMPI is afine horror magazine as longas the villains accomplishtheir devious tricks by super-naturalistic means, but awhite slavery ring . . .again? The finest story was "Mute,"

followed closely by "Skruffy'sGargoyles."

GEORGE HAYESNorwood, Mass.

VAMPIRELLA #57 was a

treat... full of surprises andchoice goodies. The cover by Enrich was

one of the more visually ap-pealing in recent months.

Suspenseful, yet mellowenough to be aesthetic.

"City of Ghosts" has RogerMcKenzie trying his hand at

the lead feature, and it was,for the most part, a commend-able effort. Carefully re-

searched, clearly told! Myonly quibble is with the fact

that McKenzie's characteriza-

tion of VAMPI is a little incon-

sistent with the direction

taken by other VAMPI writers

in recent months. The art by Jose Gonzalez

was magnificent! VAMPI'Ssmile was fantastic."Rusty Bucklers" was only

okay. Neither Bruce Jonesnor Estaban Maroto seemedtoo inspired on this one.

"Stand In" was interesting.I gather Jones is slowly cre-

ating his own fictional future, revolving around the planetDeimos. Both "Stand-In" and"The Freelancer" from #56were well-crafted, intriguinglittle thrillers and I'm look-

ing forward to more. The art-

work by Carmine Infantinoand Dick Giordano was plea-

sant, aided considerably bythe use of zip-o-tone.

"Magnificent Ephemeral"was just that ... ephemeral. . . and magnificent! A mas-terpiece in concept, design, and execution! I congratulateBruce Jones and Ramon Tor-rents on creating a true comicbook classic!

In "An Insult to Science"it became obvious that JoseMirales is an artistic protegeeof writer Fernando Fernan-dez. Mirales work is incred-ibly similar to that of Fernan-dez which is fine by me be-cause I've always liked Fer-nandez art. (And say. isn't

that Peter Cushing, first pan-el, last page?)

By Joe Brancatelli

'eird thing happenedto me on my way to

writing this column.Three pages into this

brilliant story about myfriend Ruby, the old manwho sold me comics whenI was a kid back in my old

neighborhood, the phonerings.

"Hey, Branc, it's me.Zats!" says the voice on theother end of the blower.Imagine my surprise. I

thought Zats was dead."What's happening Zats?

I thought you were, uh, youknow ..." was about all I

could stammer."Nyaah, man, that's just

the line I left with the tur-

keys in the comic-bookbusiness when I split."

Lest I bore you withmore of this snappyfriend-to-friend patter

andoffend you with raunchyreminiscences about a love

triangle Zats and I oncefound ourselves innocently

sharing, let me tell youZats was one of my best

sources when I was the

editor of Inside Comics.Naturally, I trust Zats

implicitly, partly becauseI always trust people whoI thought dead, mainly be-

cause Zats was a discrim-

inating reader and espe-

cially because the third

side of that old love tri-

angle told me Zats . . . well,

never mind that.

So when I read Zats myfirst three pages of the

story about Ruby the new-sie and he thought I shouldsummarize some readers'

mail instead, I listened to

him.

Without further tales

of Rubys and Zatses andtriangles— and sorry War-ren editor Louise Jones, 1

know I promised that sto-

ry on Ruby — here's somemail I've received since

this column began last

summer.

Steve Ditko, the artist,

sent me a 9-page missiveseveral months ago ad-

dressing himself to the self-

serving nature of the com-ic-book business.

"People in a failing busi-

ness," he wrote, "rarely see

themselves as contributingto the failure. Self-blindness

is a protective device. Somepeople believe that if theyhave a title or position

(publisher, editor, artist,

writer, etc.), this automati-cally makes them competentin whatever they do or will

do. Whatever criticism is

levelled at the causes of

the business failure, it is

automatically unfair whenit is directed at them.

"Yes, they believe oth-

ers are making mistakes,

causing problems, contri-

buting to the decline, but

they 'know' that whateverthey do, it is not their

fault when things gowrong.

"The toughest part of

comics today," Ditko con-tinued, "is not identifyingthe problem, discoveringthe causes or figuring outsolutions. The toughestpart is reaching the peo-ple in the industry who donot want to be reached.

"But I think it's impor-tant enough to try, if onlyfor one's own well beingand knowing one is notpassively, quietly surren-dering to a state of affairs

that doesn't have to be."

ot directly related to

Steve's comments, butcertainly in the same

vein, was a note from StevePatton of Hemet, Cali-

fornia. One of Steve's com-plaints was that it is "sadwhen you have to force

yourself to read some ofthe stories in the comicsyou buy. Inconsistancies

in comics are the mainthings that should be stop-

ped. Marvel seems to bethe worst offender in this

category. One issue will

start out with a blurb like:

"NEXT ISSUE: NEALADAMS. NUFF SAID."Then next issue comes

and you get your reprint

or your schlock story andart and Marvel says, 'Sor-

ry, Neal's busy, maybenext time.'

"Bull to that."

Patton, who says he's anartist and is apparentlyyoung, probably doesn't

yet realize the pressureson all creative people andhow difficult it is to "cre-

ate" on demand and ondeadline. It happens every-

N

where, not just in comics.Writers and artists andjournalists are all chronicdeadline pushers— andsome simply have a poorerrate of hitting deadlines

than others.

But all this said, Pattonis totally righteous in his

indignation. If someonetakes an assignment, it

should be finished by theagreed date. If it isn't, thecompany that employs the

creator still owes the even-tual buyer something of

equal quality as a replace-

ment. The reader shouldn'tbe forced to underwrite a

creator who didn't create

and the company shouldn'tbe allowed to pass along thecreator's problem to thebuyer by filling with some-thing inferior.

Any newspaper or maga-zine I've ever worked for

has filled with materialthey'd rather not have pub-lished when a story misses

a deadline, but I've neverseen it happen as often oras blatantly as in comics. And the replacement ma-terial has never been of

such shoddy and unpub-lishable quality as in

comics.

B!ut, as Ditko intimated,

most of today's comic-

book artisans have nopride in their work. Most,in fact, are no better thanhacks. And the belovedH.L. Mencken and his com-ment about never goingbroke by underestimatingthe intelligence of the

public notwithstanding, thecomic-book industry is

certainly paying for their

indiscretions with lowersales, smaller profits and a

creative reputation that

rightly borders on the non-existant.

On the issue of how JoeBrancatelli really feels

about comic books, tworeaders formed diametri-

cally opposed opinions.

R obert Reed of OakPark, 111., says "basi-

cally ... I'd say themain thing wrong withyour little essays is thatyou seem to utterly dis-

like comics in the first

place."

On the other hand, Cana-

dian Stephen M. Bowellwants to know why "any-one mature enough to ar-

rive at the insights youhave and mature enoughto express them as cogentlyas you do still cares aboutcomic books any more any-way?"

Concerning my sugges-

tion that comic-bookcompanies enlist fans

in an effort to correct someof the industry's crucial

distribution problems,Comic Code AdministratorLen Darvin wonders if

"you really could getenough volunteer help to

do the job. After all, this

takes time and a methodand people would want to

get paid."

I don't know, Len, I'd

be willing to bet there's

plenty of talent and volun-teers around. You've got

10,000 fans reading fan-

zines and any serious ef-

fort by a comic-book com-pany to recruit wouldsurely garner at least oneout of four of them. That's2,500 more volunteersthan you have now and at

least it's a start. Given a

little creative thinkingand some concern, I thinkcomic books could have a

viable, useful brigade of

rack checkers. Most hard-core fans wouldn't mindjotting down a few notesabout their local news-stands and sending themoff to the companies free

of charge. In fact, as I

mentioned in the column, most fans would be will-

ing to volunteer simplyfor the satisfaction of

knowing they increasedthe chance of getting theirown comics on a regularbasis.

So much for letters.

Next issue I promise to

tell you about old manRuby the newsie— and Zatsbe damned.

Joe Brancatelli, for those

ofyou who follow this little

gray box, has left Fairchild

Publications and is now a

months and three days be-

hind deadline on his booh,
