Market Day ushers in fall season with colorful crafts and crops
As leaves on the trees of the Village Green begin to change color in fall, so do Worthington’s downtown streets. On Market Day – an annual day-long festival presented by the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce, Old Worthington boasts a colorful array of arts and crafts, food and farmers market vendors, community group fundraisers, and family fun. At Market Day 2012, on Saturday, Sept. 29, visitors can …
• Shop 200 arts and crafts vendors, community groups and downtown merchants along High Street (SR 23), from SR 161 south to South Street, and on the Village Green. Vendor booths are open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., rain or shine.
• Savor the tastes of area restaurants, farms and food concessionaires. Most snack concessions are located at the north end of the vendor area, with restaurants and food trucks near the south end. You’ll find farm-fresh products from Farmers Market vendors on the southwest Village Green and at the intersection of High Street and W. New England Avenue.
• Celebrate Worthington’s proud history at 10 a.m. on the southeast green, at a dedication ceremony to unveil a historical marker. (See the related article on page 3.)
• Enjoy family entertainment throughout the day. Look for children’s activities on the southwest green and Worthington Parks & Recreation Department activities on the northwest green. High school bands will perform on the northwest green.
• get smart – and get freebies. Product demonstrations, giveaways and information are provided at many of the community and school group booths and the sponsor exhibits.
• take a break. At the AAA Hospitality Center near the Worthington United Methodist Church, and at the Chamber’s event headquarters booth #236 at W. New England Avenue and High Street, you’ll find event
directories, maps, visitor information, bottled water and soft drinks, and water and treats for pets. (See the related article about the Hospitality Center on page 3.)
• Browse books, bargains and antiques at community partner activities. At Old Worthington Library, 820 High St., the annual Market Day book sale from the Friends Foundation of Worthington Libraries will be under way from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. On the southeast Village Green, the Worthington Historical Society will conduct its popular annual antique/flea market activity.
• Buy local. Many of Worthington’s unique downtown shops offer special sales or seasonal merchandise for Market Day shoppers. Tempting treats are available at downtown restaurants. Visiting the area? Extend your stay! Stop at the Chamber booth, #236, to learn which area hotels offer discounts to Market Day visitors.
Plan aheadPlan ahead for next year’s Market Day! The event
will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Does your craft, community group or food concession belong at Market Day? Contact the Chamber office at (614) 888-3040 to sign up as a vendor or sponsor. Early Bird deadlines, which offer discounted booth rates, are available through mid-July. Information and vendor applications are
posted on the Chamber’s online Calendar of Events at www.worthingtonchamber.org. Questions may be directed to Kathryn Paugh, executive director; Kevin Douglas, events coordinator; Theresa Messenger, office administrator; and Karen Meador, membership sales account executive.
Special thanksThe Chamber is grateful to the sponsoring
Chamber-member businesses whose logos appear on the cover of this supplement and to the City of Worthington’s Service, Parks and Recreation, Engineering, Police and Fire Departments for their cooperation in staging Market Day. Special thanks to the committee of Chamber volunteers, headed by Anthony Lordo, D.D.S., to our shuttle providers, and to ThisWeek Community News for its cooperation in publishing this guide to Old Worthington Market Day 2012.

Marker Text Side 1:WORTHINGTON
HISTORIC DISTRICTWorthington was
founded in 1803 by the Scioto Company, settlers from Connecticut, and named after Thomas Worthington, a major proponent of Ohio statehood. The original plat included a 3-acre village green bounded on the east by 1-acre school and church lots. The green was surrounded by 160 residential and
commercial lots, each measuring 1/2 of an acre. By 1812, Worthington was a finalist for designation as the capital of Ohio.
Marker Text Side 2:WORTHINGTON
HISTORIC DISTRICTThe Worthington
Historic District has evolved over more than 200 years from the center of a small village to the hub of a suburban community. The district includes
numerous architectural styles: Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, American Four Square, Colonial Revival, Cape Cod, and vernacular styles. The Worthington Historic District, framed by North, South, Morning, and Evening Streets, encompasses the original village. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

relax at the AAA hospitality Area on Market dayLong respected for rescuing motorists, as
well as travel planning and insurance, AAA offers a different kind of “roadside assistance” to Market Day visitors. At the AAA Hospitality Area, on the east side of High Street near the Worthington United Methodist Church, you’ll find a welcoming spot to rest and rejuvenate during your visit to Market Day. Look for the giant “Card of the American DriverTM,” an arch that welcomes you to a rest area of canopied tables where you can rest your feet, park a stroller or wheel chair, set down your packages, or enjoy a meal you purchased
from one of the nearby food vendors. Restroom facilities are nearby on Short
Street, and fire trucks are parked close by to attract kids of all ages who would like a tour.
In addition to information about AAA membership benefits and travel, you’ll find Market Day event directories, area maps, visitor information, bottled water and soft drinks for $1, and free water and treats for pets.
