The 2014 Western North Carolina Annual Conference was held at Lake

Junaluska, June19-22. The theme of this year’s conference was “Celebra&ng Generosity.”

We reflected on God’s abundant generosity towards us. This theme was inspired by the

scripture from 2 Corinthians 9:8-12.

8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having

all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their right-

eousness endures forever.” 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and

increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occa-

sion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s peo-

ple but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

Ten worship services and two Bible studies were incorporated to make Annual

Conference a &me of worshipful work. Our worship and our study of the scripture helped

to shape and influence how business was conducted at conference as some emo&onal is-

sues were discussed. Concerns were raised about the financial status and the programs of

the Children’s Home in Winston-Salem. The conference is working with their Board of

Trustees to bring the management of the Children’s Home back in compliance with the

discipline. The conference is passionate about helping the Children’s Home become a vital

organiza&on again.

As a United Methodist Church and part of the Western North Carolina

Conference, we are called to follow Jesus, make disciples, and transform the world. Ac-

cording to the Book of Discipline, the mission of the Methodist Church is “Making disciples

of Jesus Christ for the transforma&on of the world.” We at Archdale UMC are called to

become a vital congrega&on, fully-engaged in accomplishing this

mission.

Bishop Goodpaster reminded us that although our mission trips have increased and

missional giving is up to $30 million, we s&ll spend 87% of our budget on ourselves. God

has blessed us abundantly. Therefore, with thanksgiving to God, we are to give generously

of ourselves, becoming a vital congrega&on who celebrates generosity and who can and

does make a difference in our community, state, na&on and world. There are many ways

that AUMC is making difference. A few examples include Neighborhood Café, our partner-

ship with Archdale Elementary through Communi&es in Schools, local mission work, our

youth mission trips, providing meals at the homeless shelter, and suppor&ng COAT.

We are called to share what Jesus has provided abundantly and we should place

ourselves in a posi&on to serve, rather than be served. Let us con&nue to use what we

have to grow in our faith, and show compassion and generosity to those around us.

River

In the Bible, rivers (and

other bodies of water) often

represent deliverance, salva-

tion, freedom and cleansing.

The Jordan River is especially prominent: The

Israelites crossed it to enter the Promised Land

after God delivered them from slavery, and

John baptized Jesus (and many other people)

there. The image of crossing the Jordan River

has long been a metaphor for death — cross-

ing from earthly to heavenly life, from world-

ly struggles to the bliss of God's kingdom,

from physical ailments to the wholeness of a

resurrection body.

Archdale Parents, Friends, and Family,

It has been a joy getting to know you over the last two months and I am excited to work with you all as we carry the mission of Christ to the youth and children of our community.

Did you know it is estimated that over 80% of all people make their decision to accept Christ by the time they are 18 years old? Of those 80%, when questioned as adults as to what could have made their faith journey easier, many of them have stated that growing up they often times felt bored in church and it was diffi-cult to get excited due to the lack of material aimed at their age

group. That is why I feel it is imperative that we here at Archdale UMC provide our students and children with programs relevant to the lives of our youth and children, and meaningful to their needs.

This fall, I would like to lead our children’s ministry into a program on Thursday evenings in conjunction with Neighborhood Café. This program will be tailored to all young people and will provide them with opportunities to meet Jesus right where they are. Thus being said, ideas are great, but without the church support and generous servant leaders, this program will not be able to succeed. I am look-ing for at least 12 people who are willing and able to participate for 2 hours each Thursday evening throughout the school year. In addition to relevance, stability is one of the other crucial needs in children's ministry. This program will need leaders and servants who are committed to the cause of our children and the future of our community, and are able to fulfill their committed role on a weekly basis. So, wheth-er you have young children, grown children, or just have a desire to serve the Lord, I challenge you to search your heart and pray that God would bless this ministry with the people to carry out His work. If you sense God calling you to step out in faith and serve in this kind of ministry, please contact me.

For more information or to offer your service, please call or email me by July 10th.

Serving Him,

Travis

Dear Friends at Archdale UMC, On behalf of the entire staff at Archdale Elementary School, “thank you, thank you, thank you!” for thinking of us during this busy time of year. The breakfast you provided at the end of the school year was such a wonderful way to start the day and the food was delicious! Your continued support of our students and staff mean so much to all of us. It is an honor to be counted among your church family at AUMC. We can feel your prayers and see tangible evi-dence of them being answered every day. We are looking forward to working together next year! Have a safe and wonderful summer!

Sincerely, Lisa Thompson, Principal

SUMMER VACATION!

We like to think of summer as being a relax-

ing, enjoyable time. But hurts, struggles, crises,

and problems don’t take a vacation. Many times

our difficulties seem even worse during the sum-

mer because everyone else seems to be enjoying

life while you are feeling down. If you are expe-

riencing a difficult time—emotionally, spiritual-

ly, or relationally—you don’t have to suffer

alone. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregiv-

ers and provide one-to-one Christian care to help

you through whatever it is that you are facing.

It’s free. It’s confidential. And it will make a dif-

ference in your life!

To find out more about Stephen Ministry for

you or someone you know, talk with our Pastor,

Stuart Noell or one of our Stephen Ministry

Leaders: Peggy Johnson, Rosa Allred.
