The Pseudo-Clementine Homilies and the Antiochene Polemic Against
Worship… -...
Transcript of Worship… -...
Dear Friends,
There’s a popular saying that’s quoted by the spiritual writer, Mark Link, in his series of homilies. It goes like this: I sought my soul But my soul I could not see. I sought my God But my God eluded me. I sought my brother And I found all three.
This is the meaning of the response that Jesus gave to a scribe who asked him what the greatest commandment was. The scribe asked this because it was a disputed question among the scholars of that day. We usually think that the Law was the Ten Commandments. But for Jesus’ people, there were many more than that. In fact, there are about 632 commandments!
So the scribe was engaging Jesus in a serious question. Jesus’ answer impressed the man so much that he acknowledged that “to love God above all and to love our neighbor as ourselves is worth more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
Jesus approved of this insight but then he went on to say “you are not far from the kingdom of God.” He’s almost there, but not fully. Why “not far?” Perhaps because the scribe is still in the world of commandments, the world of performance, the world of “this is how you show God that you’re doing it right.” Doing it right is certainly important but there’s more than just doing the right thing.
The problem with emphasizing what we do is that we can do something right but our hearts aren’t it. We’re doing what we’re supposed to do, not what we genuinely want to do. We’re holding back a part of who we are.
It’s like going to Mass but really being a million miles away. Or serving food at the Soup Kitchen but thinking more about the football game that we’re missing. Or even worse, doing good things because we get the applause of others. That’s why this Sunday’s gospel is so important. It reveals the hidden motives behind obeying the basic Law of “loving God and loving our neighbor.”
Jesus first describes hypocritical motives because they’re the easiest to see…the ones who do good things, like praying or serving, to get recognition and honor.
He then uses an example of another agenda behind what people do. He sees a poor widow putting in all that she had into the Temple collection box. Anyone who was doing that was doing something good because they were supporting the place where God was worshipped by all of Israel. But, by insisting that people support this as much as they could, the scribes and priests were also encouraging those who had little to live on to do what the widow was doing…giving all she had.
The agenda of supporting the Temple ran smack into the fundamental care that all Israelites should offer to those that the God was most open to: the orphans and the widows. Because their hearts were more caught up in maintaining the Temple, the scribes and priests missed the call to care for the poor.
Moving beyond the performance model of religion, means falling in love with God. We don’t fall in love with rules. We fall in love with a person. This is why God became one of us in Jesus…so that we could love God in the humanity that he shared and still shares with all persons. Which is why when we’ve sought a brother or a sister, “we’ve found all three”…our souls, our God, and our brother or sister.
Love,
Fr. Joe
Worship…Called and formed by the Word of God, we
worship our Lord primarily in the Mass. The Eucharist is
the center of our Christian life. It grounds everything else
we do, from prayer to our daily tasks to our ministries. If you

following Pastoral Council Representatives: Fr. Colin

MEDITATION Sarah by Delmore Schwartz
The angel said to me: “Why are you laughing?”
Laughing! Not me! Who was laughing?
I did not laugh. It was
A cough. I was coughing. Only hyenas laugh.
It was the cold I caught nine minutes after
Abraham married me: when I saw
How I was slender and beautiful, more and more
Slender and beautiful.
I was also
Clearing my throat; something inside of me
Is continually telling me something
I do not wish to hear: A joke: A big joke:
But the joke is always just on me.
He said: you will have more children than
the sky’s stars
And the seashore’s sands, if you just wait patiently.
Wait: patiently: ninety years? You see
The joke’s on me!”
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time “I say to you, this poor widow put in more than
all the other contributors to the treasury. For
they all contributed out of their abundance, but
she out of her poverty has put in everything she
had, her whole living.” – Mark 12:43-44
Jesus gets right to the point – we are all called to give
money to support the mission of the Church, regardless
of circumstance. No gift is too small or insignificant!
Giving money to support the mission of our local parish
is a matter of our faith, just like praying and
participating in parish ministries. When you make a
financial offering, is it from our “first fruits” or from
what is “left over”?
Enforceable international agreements are
urgently needed, since local authorities are not
always capable of effective intervention.
Relations between states must be respectful of
each other’s sovereignty, but must also lay down
mutually agreeable means of averting regional
disasters which would eventually affect everyone.
Global regulatory norms are needed to impose
obligations that prevent unacceptable actions, for
example when powerful companies dump
contaminated waste or [develop] polluting
industries in other countries.
Pope Francis from his encyclical Laudato Si:
On Care for our Common Home
Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the
Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we
become ever more truly the People of God.

PASTORAL COUNCIL MINUTES September 30, 2015
Old Business o Capital Campaign Update
We have hired Community Counseling Service Co, LLC to oversee our upcoming Capital Campaign. The process will begin with a feasibility study in November: 60 parishioners (a cross-section of the parish) will be ‘interviewed’ by CCS. The manifold purpose is to discover the various levels of parish involvement, to ascertain their likelihood of contributing to the campaign, and to amass any recommendations that would help improve the campaign. The actual campaign is slated to begin in January.
o Street Faire Update (As of Sept. 30th meeting) We have no number for total profit yet; the final results should be ready in a few weeks. The
‘lack’ of rides was due to a ride vendor who backed out at the last minute. There were some problems with volunteers; this will be discussed at the recap meeting. There will be a Street Faire evaluation in the bulletin & on the website—all are encouraged to fill it out!
New Business o We have a new Youth Minister – Caitlin Seymour! A graduate of Loyola University, she has been
involved in youth ministry for several years, and spent time in missionary work in South Sudan, Africa, working with the Salesians. Caitlin is very excited about working with St. Anne’s youth. We will be hearing more from her shortly.
o Redefining Parish Roles: Laurie Hessman, our Rectory receptionist, is now the parish administrative assistant! Lynn Alfieri will be assuming the job of daytime Rectory receptionist Monday through Friday.
o Welcome Packets have been updated and distributed to newly registered parishioners! Next on the list: a kiosk located somewhere in the ‘social’ areas of the Church, where one can go to find out information about parish events, etc.
o Fr. Colin now wears 2 hats: parish priest and Bergen Catholic Campus Minister. One of his biggest responsibilities is to run retreats for each religion class, which is approximately 30 classes. These retreats will be held during the school day here at St. Anne’s on Tuesdays & Thursdays, thereby bringing in a little income for the parish
o The Pastoral Council has HOMEWORK!!! Before the next meeting, members were asked to set 5 goals for 2015-2016 year. Next time we meet, we will set priorities. We were also asked to take a look again at Rebuilt, for some ideas. Also, send names of nominees for the Council to John or Fr. Joe.
The Pastoral Council will meet again on Monday, November 9
