L: This is a new day the Lord is making! P: Let us worship God!

Gathering Offertory John Ness Beck (1987)

With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on High? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings? Shall I come before Him with yearling calves?

Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil?

Shall I give my firstborn for my transgressions, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He has shown you, O man; He has shown you what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness,

And to walk humbly with your God?

Opening Prayer God of infinite patience and wisdom, we come to You with so many things that

claim our time, our energy, our resources, our very lives. We are easily drawn away from serving by the enticements of wealth, ease, and comfort.

Just like the young man in the scriptures, we are often owned by our possessions, or held captive by our treasures. You offer us healing and hope, and seek to

transform our lives from captivity to freedom in service. We are overwhelmed by war and worry, fear and frustration, disease and disaster. Help us place

our trust in you. May Your Kingdom become our treasure. Give us new courage today to follow You. AMEN.

Hymn Zacchaeus was a Tax Man Carolyn Wynfree Gillette (2010)

Sung to Aurelia (The Church’s One Foundation)

1. Zacchaeus was a tax man who one day climbed a tree, For he was short in stature and said he could not see. And yet he had a problem that mattered even more:

He didn't see the suffering his greed had caused the poor.

2. O Lord, You saw Zacchaeus — so wealthy, yet alone. You said, "Come down — and hurry! I'm coming to your home."

For You broke bread with sinners and saw within each one A person loved and treasured — God's daughter or God's son.

3. It wasn't just the treetop that helped Zacchaeus see; Your love and welcome showed him how different life could be.

He said that he'd start over and work to make things fair; He'd speak the truth, bring justice, and find new ways to share.

4. O Christ, You bid us welcome and help us all to see! May we respond by building a just society.

Then children won't be hungry and all will share your bread. Then those who now must struggle will live in joy instead.

Gospel Lesson Mark 10:17-31 Common English Bible

17 As Jesus continued down the road, a man ran up, knelt before him, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to obtain eternal life?”

18 Jesus replied, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except the one God. 19 You know the commandments: Don’t commit murder. Don’t commit adultery. Don’t steal. Don’t give false testimony. Don’t cheat. Honor your father and mother.”

20 “Teacher,” he responded, “I’ve kept all of these things since I was a boy.” 21 Jesus looked at him carefully and loved him. He said, “You are lacking one thing. Go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor. Then you will have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me.” 22 But the man was dismayed at this statement and went away saddened, because he had many possessions.

23 Looking around, Jesus said to his disciples, “It will be very hard for the wealthy to enter God’s kingdom!” 24 His words startled the disciples, so Jesus told them again, “Children, it’s difficult to enter God’s kingdom! 25 It’s easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter God’s kingdom.” 26 They were shocked even more and said to each other, “Then who can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them carefully and said, “It’s impossible with human beings, but not with God. All things are possible for God.” 28 Peter said to him, “Look, we’ve left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “I assure you that anyone who has left house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, or farms because of me and because of the good news 30 will receive one hundred times as much now in this life — houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and farms (with harassment) — and in the coming age, eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last. And many who are last will be first.”

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord P: Praise to You, Lord Christ!

~ We Respond ~

Response I Will Follow James Taylor (1981)

Yonder mountain so high, I can't make it all on my own, Rolling river, why so wide? To sweep me up and to bear me on, Up against the Light so bright that I can't even close my eyes.

I guess I will follow; I know I’ve got to go; Guess, I will follow, follow Love.

Growing slowly like a tree, someday soon … Fed by the gentle, full Sun and Moon; Set my soul free.

Drifting like a cloud in the sky, You can see my life from high above. I know I must follow; Even though I have to leave my home;

Yes, I will follow; follow Love.

Oh, half the future and half the past, all waiting inside Your eyes. And after all of this, to last and last; Till at last it's my time to rise. Rise!

True believer that I am, I am blind, lead me on Blessed receiver of Your love, Yours is my time; But I've been holding on.

With the Word now spoken; The circle will not be broken. And I’ll surely follow, even though I have to go.

Yes, I will follow, follow Love.

The Giving, *Presentation and Blessing of our Gifts

L: We give thanks for all that God has given us. P: May God bless all that we offer: our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service.

~ We Gather as Community ~

*Passing of the Peace L: The Lord be with you! P: And also with you! Greet one another with signs of peace.

*Song of Fellowship Give Thanks Henry Smith (1970)

~ We Sing the Theme ~

Money, Money, Money Anderson / Ulvaeus (1976)

I work all night, I work all day; To pay the bills I have to pay; Ain't it sad? And still there never seems to be A single penny left for me; That's too bad!

In my dreams I have a plan; If I got me a wealthy man; I wouldn't have to work at all; I'd fool around and have a ball!

Refrain: Money, money, money; Must be funny; In the rich man's world. Money, money, money; Always sunny; In the rich man's world.

Ah-ha; All the things I could do; If I had a little money; It's a rich man's world; It's a rich man's world.

Someone like that is hard to find; But I can't get it off my mind; Ain't it sad? And if they happen to be free; I bet they wouldn't fancy me; That's too bad!

So I must leave, I'll have to go; To Las Vegas or Monaco; And win a fortune in a game; My life will never be the same! Refrain

Response Bigger Barns Carolyn Winfree Gillette (2001) Sung to Aberyswyth (Jesus, Lover of My Soul)

"Bigger barns are what I need!" So a rich man said one day. "From my worries I'll be free when my wealth is stored away."

"Fool!" God said, "Today you'll die! Will your wealth mean anything? All life's blessings really lie in my life that wealth can't bring."

"Bigger barns are what we need for our money, gadgets, more!" Lord, we're tempted to believe having wealth, we'll be secure! Somewhere children cry for food or to have a doctor's care.

Can our bigger barns be good when poor neighbors know despair?

God of love, we long to know what will make us truly blest. Jesus taught us long ago wealth won't give us peace or rest.

You are our security! Safe in you, we serve, O Lord. May we find we're rich indeed when we're sharing with the poor.
