FOCUS ON WORSHIP
ALL SAINTS DAY: The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes
back at least to the third century. All Saints Day celebrates the whole communion of saints and the
baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the Body of Christ. It is the custom of many
congregations to remember the faithful who have died. This may include a reading of the names of our
loved ones who have died during the past year during the past year. The color of the day is white.
CHRIST THE KING: This is the last festival Sunday of the Church year. This festival celebrates the
kingly rule of Christ, who was enthroned upon the cross and will return as humankind’s ultimate
sovereign and judge. As we gather at the Table of Christ, we wear the crown of baptism and trace Jesus’
royal sign (the holy cross) over our brows and bodies. We leave Worship strengthened to serve those in
need. We look for the day when all people will see Christ with the scepter of peace and the crown of
justice. The color of the day is white.

Pastor Fred’s
Thanksgiving Message
What Next?
Now that Halloween is over, it gives us pause to look back beyond all the cute
costumes that arrived at our door steps and consider some of the not-so-fun aspects
of its history. When one considers the suspicions of witchcraft throughout history we
may wonder how people could possibly believe the hysteria that swept over Europe
during the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries. Entire families were burned at the
stake and during one period even the Pope declared war on witches that resulted in
some small towns almost devoid of women who were the favorite target of accusa-
tions. The famous Salem witch trials only ended when the town's judge decided it
was time to call a halt on these trials when his own wife was under suspicion. The
whole concept of witches started early in the Old Testament and would raise its ugly
head throughout history.
While we are at it consider the belief especially found among slave owners that black
people were the result of the curse place upon Cain for slaying his brother Abel. Not
only was he banished to somewhere east of Eden but henceforth the color of his skin
would declare his sin that would also be visited among all future generations.
We, of course, are beyond such beliefs. Or are we? It is so easy to use scripture to
proof text subtle discrimination. Consider the ban on ordination of women throughout
the history of the church based upon ancient custom and especially advocated by
Saint Paul. It was only when we Lutherans and some others considered the very core
of the Gospel that we understood that all of humanity was open to the Holy Spirit's
power of proclamation.
So the question rises - what next? What is out there in the world of beliefs that stifle
the work of the Spirit? Or even more frightening, what resides in out own hearts?
In Christ,
Pastor Fred

Please recall our wonderful Reformation Sunday celebration rededicating our church
sanctuary on October 29th. Within that sanctuary we gather to worship each week
with both traditional and contemporary rituals and music. This month I will highlight
the origins of our traditional music. In the future I will highlight contemporary music
that we will begin using in worship.
As we celebrate the special place of Luther in history please recall that the Reformation
began as a theological dispute that mushroomed into a rebellion against the authority
of the Catholic Church and the spiritual leadership of Rome, the center of Western
Christianity. The liturgical changes that eventually ensued naturally brought about
musical changes, which differed from country to country according to the degree of
reform advocated by the various Protestant leaders: Luther in Germany; Calvin and his
followers in France, the Low Countries, and Switzerland; and Henry VIII in England.
At first, the music of the Reformation in Germany, written by Lutheran composers,
remained very close to the traditional Catholic sources and styles of plainsong and
polyphony. Some music retained the original Latin texts, other works used German
translations, and still others had new German texts fitted to the old melodies (this
work was called a contrafactum). The Lutheran Church's most distinctive and
important musical innovation became the strophic hymn— called Choral or
Kirchenlied (church song) in German and chorale in English— intended for
congregational singing in unison. Just as plainchant was the basis for musical
expansion and elaboration for Catholic composers, so, too, the repertory of chorales
became the starting point for a great deal of Lutheran church music from the sixteenth
century until the time of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) and beyond.
St. Luke’s is a congregation that can deftly sing traditional hymns of the past – well-
known music that touches our hearts - even in four parts! Now that we have
rededicated our sanctuary let us also rededicate our voices in song - to sing new
melodies that touch the hearts of younger generations.

Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services, Altar Bread Bakers, Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members, Musicians and many other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.
If you are interested in serving and would like more information about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship Ministry, we would love to hear from you.
Please contact Pastor Fred or Vince Reedinger for more information. You’ll be glad you did!
Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the
Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are
used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God
and those who attend worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of
God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor
of” a special person, an anniversary, birthday,
birth, baptism or other special event. More than
one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be
given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday
service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly
from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered
to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service
that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or
homebound members. Please sign up on the flower chart located in
the fellowship hall.
Please contact the church office or Jean Stewart if you have any
questions. Thank you.
Do you have something for the Newsletter?
The Dec. 2017 Newsletter Deadline is Nov. 20. Please call in or e-mail in your submissions with your all of your September meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. Thanks! 804-272-0486, [email protected].
2018 Flower Calendar
The 2018 Flower Calendar is now up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so ? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the church office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study
Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study is a scripture discussion every Wednesday morning, from 10:30am - 11:30am. He will continue using a variety of study methods so we can delve into the text to discover new insights in how the words speak over the centuries and into our own time. There is no need to bring a Bible - we have plenty here to work with. Classes will continue every week at 10:30am on Wednesday mornings. Please come out and join us!!

Demonstrate your thankfulness this season
Now, with fall and harvest time drawing near, people start to reflect upon the things they are thankful for
and how they can show their gratitude by supporting others. During this time, St. Luke Lutheran Church
anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual
and family in the congregation that we are able to carry on our ministries now and throughout the year.
One way Thrivent members who are eligible to participate in the Thrivent Choice® Program can do this is
by directing Choice Dollars® to their churches. The Choice Dollars grant funds your church receives will help
you continue to minister to others, strengthen communities and change lives. The Thrivent Choice (SM)
program lets members recommend where some of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' charitable outreach
funds go by directing Choice Dollars (SM). The amount of Choice Dollars designated to you depends on the
type of Thrivent Insurance products you have that qualify.
If you need a convenient way to make recurring contributions or plan to make an additional gift before the
end of the year, we encourage you to check out Thrivent’s Choice Dollars program. Do you need additional
information? Log in to Thrivent’s website, www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice to find out more. Once there, you
can choose how to direct Thrivent Choice Dollars to send them to a charity of your choice. When doing so we
ask that you consider designating St Luke Lutheran Church.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
