Dear Friends, Today’s gospel raises the question of the relationship between religion and politics. Jesus said: “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s but give to God what is God’s.” This saying has often been interpreted to support the American ideal of the separation of Church and State. Whether it does mean that or not, the fact is that the two spheres can’t ever be so neatly separated. I was just reading an article that described how a branch of conservative Christianity has been using social media rather effectively to promote candidates that represent its agenda in congressional elections. There’s another way that politics and religion can be “strange bedfellows” however. I’m referring to the use of what’s called the “politics of the base” in religious conversations. In this political model, the effort is to score points by stressing certain values in such a way that they come across loud and clear. People know where they stand and that helps them feel comfortable especially in threatening times like ours. After all, “we all agree”. The downside of this approach is to so emphasize the differences with one’s opponents that the negative quality of the other position is exaggerated. The result can lead to neglecting the truth and a deepening of divisions. You can see this reflected in the current camps in the Church. Those who call themselves “liberal” or “progressive” often line up behind such causes as pro-choice policies; greater control of local parishes by lay people; the ordination of women and married people to the priesthood; full financial disclosure by parishes and dioceses; liturgical innovation; increased freedom of expression. Those who call themselves “conservative” or “traditionalists” take their stand on such issues as pro-life policies; conformity to a strict view of Vatican II liturgical policies and bringing back more Latin into the Mass; “orthodox” expressions of the faith; a preference for “the Church as it used to be.” I have obviously just painted a set of caricatures, but to make a point when people in the Church follow the “politics of the base” they all too often end up sacrificing their sensitivity to the truth for the sake of belonging to the right camp, whether it be “liberal” or “conservative.” They build up walls and end up undermining their capacity to listen to Christ. Here’s where today’s statement by Jesus can be very helpful. He’s not playing to the American value of church-state separation. As the one who proclaimed the “kingdom of God,” there can be no equality between God and the state. For him, God must take priority. That means recognizing the limitations of how one thinks and being willing to understand the validity of another’s point of view. No one can be all right all the time. The truth is that no one possess the full truth. Of course, adherence to our understanding of Christ may sometimes mean disagreement. Listening to different positions though is the sure way to discover the deeper truth that unites us. Disagreements should never lead to tearing down those with whom we disagree. When that happens then we know that we have stepped over the line. Then our souls are in danger for the Truth has once again been sacrificed on Calvary. Love, Fr. Joe

People know where they stand and that helps them feel comfortable especially in threatening times like ours. After all, “we all agree”. Those who call themselves “liberal” or “progressive” often line up behind such causes as pro-choice policies; greater control of local

parishes by lay people; the ordination of women and married people to the priesthood; full financial disclosure by parishes and dioceses; liturgical innovation; increased freedom of expression. Those who call themselves “conservative” or “traditionalists” take their stand on such issues as pro-life policies; conformity to a strict view of Vatican II liturgical policies and bringing back more Latin into the Mass; “orthodox” expressions of the faith; a preference for “the Church as it used to be.” I have obviously just painted a set of caricatures, but to make a point – when people in the Church follow the “politics of the base” they all too often end up sacrificing their sensitivity to the truth for the sake of belonging to the right camp, whether it be “liberal” or “conservative.” They build up walls and end up undermining their capacity to listen to Christ. ALTERNATIVE TO ABORTION If you know

someone who is considering having an abortion,

here is a number they might call that could be of

help to them to consider an alternative to this

practice. The number is

1-800-395-HELP (4357).

During October, Pope Francis asks us to pray especially ...that all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good.

Stewardship in Action… This summer when it became obvious that we would need some volunteers to do some of the work here at St. Anne’s two wonderful ladies stepped up to the plate when they noticed that the church needed to be cleaned on a regular basis. I found their spirit of stewardship inspiring. Karen Kelley and Joyce Toledo have made a real difference for all the rest of us, especially when Cardinal Tobin came the beginning of October and they have been continuing to do so. Just a small thanks for their effort on behalf of all of us.

REFLECTION

St. Francis And The Sow by Galway Kinnell

The bud

stands for all things,

even those things that don't flower,

for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;

though sometimes it is necessary

to reteach a thing its loveliness,

to put a hand on its brow

of the flower

and retell it in words and in touch

it is lovely

until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;

as St. Francis

put his hand on the creased forehead

of the sow, and told her in words and in touch

blessings of earth on the sow, and the sow

began remembering all down her thick length,

from the earthen snout all the way

through the fodder and slops to the spiritual curl of

the tail,

from the hard spininess spiked out from the spine

down through the great broken heart

to the blue milken dreaminess spurting and shuddering

from the fourteen teats into the fourteen mouths sucking

and blowing beneath them:

the long, perfect loveliness of sow.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.”

(Matthew 22:21) Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren’t “Owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second.

CREATION AT THE CROSSROADS For the next six weeks, BTOR will NOT be meeting at its regular day/time.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we become ever

more truly the People of God. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council

Gift Bearers at Mass What an honor it is to carry the wine, hosts and offerings to the priest at Mass for consecration! Any occasion can be a time to serve as a Gift Bearer: a birthday, an anniversary, or just a "happy day." Or maybe you would like to bring up the gifts on the memorial of a loved one. Gift

Bearers actively participate in the celebration of the Mass by presenting the gifts of Bread and Wine at the altar and require no special skill or permanent ministerial duty, and yet it is a beautiful and significant part of the Mass. If you would like to bring up the gifts at Mass you can sign up for a specific Mass in the book in the Reconciliation Room located in the main vestibule of the church or speak with an Usher before Mass.

We are grateful to the 1,252 people who worshipped with us the weekend of Oct. 7/8 and contributed $13,453.00 in the offertory and $2,347.00 through Online Giving offertory,

which along with other fees and donations totaled $20,910.50. We are also grateful to the 1,376 people who worshipped with us last weekend and

contributed $14,314.00 in the offertory and $2,805.00 through Online Giving offertory, which along with other fees and donations totaled $22,039.00.

Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others.

Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy

months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should

happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate

it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy

envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be

sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks.

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR 2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select the

Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.” When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations. Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
