World Water Week 2016: Water for Sustainable Growth
and MENA Focus
1. Background
The Regional Environmental Center (REC) will be attending this year's World
Water Week and, with selected partners from the Middle East and North Africa
(MENA) region, will actively engage and host a cluster of activities within the
year’s thematic scope of Water for sustainable growth and the MENA Focus 2016.
The MENA Focus 2016
The MENA Focus 2016 aims to enhance experience and knowledge sharing as well
as to promote MENA priority issues in the global water agenda. Within this Year’s
thematic scope ‘Water for sustainable growth’, the participants will address key
issues that impede sustainable growth, and at the same time contribute to the
global water agenda by showcasing replicable practices and lessons learnt.
Water for Sustainable Growth
Stockholm World Water Week echoes and follows up on the UN ”water and jobs”
theme and in the broader context of sustainable growth, thus contributing
directly and indirectly to the SDG 8 to “promote sustained, inclusive and
sustainable growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”. This
Year’s theme will address sustainable growth for all by focusing on inclusiveness
in terms of the societal and human dimensions. The Week will also follow up more
generally on the implementation of the water related SDGs and the new climate
agreement.
This activity is a milestone of the Water Growth Stability Initiative (WGSIni) and is financed and produced under the framework of the WATER SUM project, implemented by the Regional Environmental Center and funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
The REC’s contributions to the World Water Week and Mena Focus 2016 consists
of hosting three events - SIWI Sofa: Water Growth Stability Initiative (WGSIni),
World Café 2016, SIWI Sofa: Local Water Security Action Planning (LWSAP) – and
an exhibition stand, in addition to a study tour and active participation in other
activities of the MENA Focus of the World Water Week as seen on the draft
agenda below.

SIWI Sofa: Local Water Security Action Planning (LWSAP)
In a cross between a speakers’ corner and an interview studio, experts, decision
makers and leaders will be interviewed live on a variety of water-related issues.
In this session of the SIWI Sofa, the REC and WATER SUM project team will sit
down with selected partners to talk about the Water, Growth and Stability
Initiative.
The Regional Environmental Center launched a methodology for local water
security action planning (LWSAP) in April 2016. The methodology is presented in
a manual that offers a theoretically informed step-by-step guide to local water
security action planning, emphasizing in particular the importance of
inclusiveness and democratic decision making. The LWSAP methodology is an
original methodology comprising seven interrelated activities, some supported by
a separate tailored methodology, which cover stakeholder analysis, public opinion
assessment, local water security assessment, and problem analysis and
prioritisation.
