WWII Veterans - July 2016 Introduction World War II Veterans of Grundy County, TN By David Patton July 2016 We have long been fascinated by military history and especially that of World War II. It was the last war that saw the American people truly united and carried through to total victory before the indifference of Korea and the fragmenting of American resolve in Vietnam. In 1995, after working on the Grundy County Post for ten years or so, we suggested to publisher Y.B. Ashby that he publish a special edition in September to commemorate the 50 th anniversary of the end of World War II with the emphasis on Grundy County’s role. Being a WWII veteran himself, Mr. Ashby was eager to do so, and I immediately began gathering photos and information and served as the countywide coordinator. What resulted was a once in a lifetime publication that was the most comprehensive account of Grundy County’s war effort and has been microfilmed by the Tennessee State Library and Archives so that future generations will have a reference point on this subject. The premise was simple: people from across Grundy County gathered names of anyone who had ever lived in Grundy County and served in World War II, whether they were lifelong residents of just lived here briefly. Then we broke the list down into categories. Those still living in Grundy County in September 1995, those living elsewhere, and, sadly, those who were deceased 50 years after the war ended. Our efforts to preserve the World War II history of Grundy County continues as we keep our list updated daily. In 2005, in conjunction with the 60 th anniversary of the end of World War II, we wrote a year - long series of articles about the veterans of Grundy County for The Cumberland View, beginning with Obid Marion “Soap” McNabb of Palmer and ending with Y.B. Ashby of Gruetli-Laager. Mrs. Janelle Taylor of Pelham was of invaluable assistance on the series and her help is gratefully acknowledged. Also in conjunction with this effort, on Veterans’ Day 2005, Mrs. Taylor and Willene Campbell published a list of Grundy County veterans who died in

We have long been fascinated by military history and especially that of World

War II. It was the last war that saw the American people truly united and

carried through to total victory before the indifference of Korea and the

fragmenting of American resolve in Vietnam.

In 1995, after working on the Grundy County Post for ten years or so, we

suggested to publisher Y.B. Ashby that he publish a special edition in

September to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II

with the emphasis on Grundy County’s role.

Being a WWII veteran himself, Mr. Ashby was eager to do so, and I

immediately began gathering photos and information and served as the

countywide coordinator. What resulted was a once in a lifetime publication

that was the most comprehensive account of Grundy County’s war effort and

has been microfilmed by the Tennessee State Library and Archives so that

future generations will have a reference point on this subject.

The premise was simple: people from across Grundy County gathered names

of anyone who had ever lived in Grundy County and served in World War II,

whether they were lifelong residents of just lived here briefly. Then we broke

the list down into categories. Those still living in Grundy County in September

1995, those living elsewhere, and, sadly, those who were deceased 50 years

after the war ended.

Our efforts to preserve the World War II history of Grundy County continues

as we keep our list updated daily. In 2005, in conjunction with the 60th

anniversary of the end of World War II, we wrote a year - long series of articles

about the veterans of Grundy County for The Cumberland View, beginning

with Obid Marion “Soap” McNabb of Palmer and ending with Y.B. Ashby of

Gruetli-Laager. Mrs. Janelle Taylor of Pelham was of invaluable assistance

on the series and her help is gratefully acknowledged.

Also in conjunction with this effort, on Veterans’ Day 2005, Mrs. Taylor and

Willene Campbell published a list of Grundy County veterans who died in

military service during World War II. This detailed history brought to light

many unknown facts and circumstances about the sacrifices of these men 60

years after the war ended and is the best work ever done on this aspect of

Grundy County’s World War II history. It appeared in The Cumberland View

and Grundy County Herald, and all of us owe them a big “thank you” for all

their hard work and perseverance.

If you have any connection to Grundy County, it would be almost impossible

not to find the name of an ancestor or acquaintance as you peruse this list. We

hope you appreciate what they did so that you can live in freedom all these

years later and that you will teach your children and grandchildren respect for

all veterans and what our wonderful U.S.A. stands for. If so, our years of work

promoting patriotism in Grundy County will have been worthwhile.

Guide to Using This List

When this list was originally compiled in 1995 we tried to make it relevant to

where the veterans were living at that time. For example, Joe Willard Fults

grew up in Palmer and went in the Navy there, but in 1995, he was living in

Coalmont, so we put him in that town’s listing. The United States became a

mobile society after WWII, and many Grundy County veterans of the war

went “up north” for new opportunities and never lived again in their old

hometowns.

In the “Living Elsewhere” category on the list, if the veteran was living

outside of Grundy County, we tried to put them in the town where they grew

up if that information was available.

So, if you don’t find a name on the list where you think, just keep looking. It

should be somewhere on the list as we’ve tried to make it as complete as

possible. Of course, as with any human endeavor, it’s not perfect, so please

forgive any mistakes we have made.
