Basic facts about world population

World population = the people who live in the world at one moment (simple enough). It is impossible to say how many people are living in the world when you are reading this slideshow. If you’re really curious, though, you may want to check out http://www.ibiblio.org/lunarbin/worldpop.

World population = statistical heavenThe web is filled with pages in which information about the statistics of world population are the protagonist. Curious about how the world population is distributed among the continents or ethnicities? Want to know what the figures looked like a few centuries ago? A good compilation of world population figures can be found in Wikipedia.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population.

Basic facts about wp (II)

The (pragmatic) importance of world population...or, rather, of its dataSo why is there such a big fuzz in organizations about world population data?Because collecting data has proven to be useful when it comes to solving the world population problems (see below).

Knowing how many people were born in each region or state of a country will give the governments, for example, useful information to analyze before they implement a law or create a campaign. This information is needed as well to make studies to know if such laws or campaigns had a visible effect.

World Population Issues

Improving reproductive health“Reproductive health” is defined by the WHO as “the state of physical, mental, and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system at all stages of life”.

It also implies “that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life and that they have the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so”.

What rights are included in that?1) The right of men and women to be informed and to have access to safe, effective, affordable, and acceptable methods of family planning of their choice; 2) the right to appropriate health-care services that enable women to safely go through pregnancy and childbirth.
