MINORS
The Department of World Languages and Cultures offers minors in Arabic,
Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Linguistics, and
Russian Studies. The minor typically consists of 5 course units, although
the requirements vary for the intensive language programs. A minimum
grade of C is required in all courses taken to fulfill the minor requirements.
We encourage all our minors to study abroad. All courses taken
abroad will count towards graduation. Two of the courses will count
towards the five courses required for a minor.

SPANISH/EDUCATION MAJORS
Requirements for Spanish teachers
In order to receive a teaching license in Spanish, the state of NJ requires:
Spanish major (or at least 30 credits in Spanish with a variety of levels
and topics).
A minimum score of 168 on the Spanish Language Praxis II (#5195).
A state-approved course in second language acquisition for any
certification to teach Spanish (Pre-K, Elementary, Middle or
Secondary.) Our course is WLC 390 (taught each Spring, Weds. 5:30pm).
A minimum an OPI rating of ACTFL Adv. Low.
WHY LANGUAGES? The study of languages, cultures, and literature gives us a better understanding of our modern,
complex and multicultural world. Our faculty members represent over
10 countries and speak: Arabic, Chinese, Danish, English, French, German, Italian, Hebrew, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Yiddish.
We sponsor trips, speakers, language clubs, and a variety of study abroad options. WLC creates a
dynamic environment that prepares students to become global citizens.

World Languages and Linguistics major
SPA 101, 102 & 103 OFFERED IN SUMMER SESSIONS
The World Languages and Linguistics Major enables students to
combine a strong grounding in linguistics, including language
acquisition, with in-depth study of these language already offered at
TCNJ: Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.
The major consists of four linguistics courses and seven courses in a
world language offered by TCNJ. The seven courses in a world
language will be the student’s specialization within the major, and
that specialization is reflected on the student’s transcript. At least 5
courses must be taken at the 300 level.

WORLD LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICS
The major works well as a second major with many other HSS majors.
Linguists can seek important work in numerous fields across the world including international business, law enforcement, marketing, or government work
Liberal Learning requirements can be fulfilled while completing the major.

The WLL major offers students a strong grounding in linguistics coupled with in-depth study of a world language already offered at the college. Students select a language specialization at the time of joining the major, which will be reflected on their transcript at the time of graduation.
This major is housed in the Department of World Languages and Cultures, and incorporates the best practices with regard to the teaching of world languages already in place in the WLC Department.

World Languages Requirements
The major assumes no previous foreign language study. Even if students enter with
no knowledge of a foreign language, they will have ample time to complete the required
seven language courses. Students entering the major at a higher proficiency level will be
able to take a greater number of upper level courses in the foreign language. Students will be
actively encouraged to complete at least one semester of study abroad. They will be able to
take three language and linguistics courses for the WLL major and one free elective during
their semester abroad.

STUDY ABROAD Study abroad students may take up to five courses. Upon completion of the
courses with a grade of C- or better, all credits will count towards
graduation. Spanish majors may count up to three 300-level courses
towards their major. Spanish minors may count up to two courses towards
their minor.
To study abroad in the Fall semester,
your application must be submitted by March 6
Unless otherwise specified, overseas courses will be counted in the
following ways:
Students who take 200 level courses overseas may receive credit for
SPA 219, or SPA 241 or SPA 270 as determined by the course content.
Students who take 300 level courses overseas will receive credit for
SPA 370 IF they have met the pre-requisites cited above for the course
they have elected. In this case, they will receive credit for SPA 370
under the categories of literature or culture or linguistics as determined
by the course content. Specifically, students who intend to receive
credit for:
370 Culture must have completed three 200 level courses
370 Literature must have completed SPA 241
370 Linguistics must have completed SPA 215
Students who enroll in 300 level course overseas without having
completed the necessary pre-requisites at the time of registration will
not receive 300-level credit. They will receive credit for SPA 270
instead.

TCNJ Madrid Program Summer 2020
Study in Madrid, one of the world’s most cosmopolitan and vibrant cities. Travel through Spanish art, architecture and history in guided tours to historic sites. Visit some of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the world – Toledo, Segovia and Avila – designed as World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. Live in the international dormitory, Casa do Brasil, located near the Universidad Complutense campus.
In order to qualify for admission to the
program, students must have a
minimum GPA of 2.5. All students in the program must register for SPA 171 and
at least one other course and may
