NKF DIALYSIS CENTRES TEL NO
Greetings from the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia and Gong Xi
Fa Cai to those celebrating the Lunar New Year festivity.
With time already enveloping one more festivity, we were indeed blessed that
donations had been forthcoming steadily to help us sustain our day-to-day
operations.
We had moved towards a more humane approach with especially our centres
organising more get-togethers amongst our patients, their family members
and staff members to foster closer and warmer rapport so as to minimise the
loneliness and frustrations in coping with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
As an inspiration to the patients and their families, we had even highlighted the
experiences of some who had overcome adversities to not only lead more or
less normal lives, but, had even gone to raise children to achieve higher goals
in life.
Furthermore, in a breakaway move from carrying out mobile health screening
in situ, we had as a pilot project joined hands with MySihat, the Malaysian
Health Promotion Board. Under this scheme, we carried out health screening
operations, while healthcare clinics would follow through from where we left off.
Under these circumstances, those in need of further medical attention would not
be left to their own devices to seek such attention.
Happy reading & cheers.

NKF Training Centre Aims HighNational Kidney Foundation
of Malaysia (NKF) has been
conducting the Post Basic
Haemodialysis (PBHD) Nursing
Programme in its Training Centre
since 2005. The six-month
programme is designed for
registered nurses with minimum
two (2) years clinical working
experience and three (3) months’
experience in haemodialysis. The
programme’s aim has always
been to equip nurses with the
knowledge and competences
to respond effectively to the
demands of the kidney failure
patients.
NKF has invested to provide
a wide range of facilities for the
students of the PBHD Nursing
Programme, so that they will get
the most out of their learning
experience. These facilities that
support teaching-learning activities
include a computer lab, a mock ward
and skill lab, online nursing journals,
additional renal-focused books for
the library and an additional lecture
hall fully equipped with audio visual
equipment. NKF Training Centre has
also completed a curriculum review
which incorporates Core Sciences
such as Basic Medical Sciences,
Behavioural Sciences and Nursing
Sciences.
NKF’s Certificate in PBHD
has been specifically designed to
meet the Nursing Board Malaysia’s
criteria. In order to ensure that
the overall quality of education,
training, learning and assessment
for the PBHD Nursing Programme
is improved and maintained at a
consistently high level, NKF aimed
to get the accreditation for the said
programme from the Malaysian
Qualifications Agency (MQA). The
accreditation visit by the MQA’s
panel of auditors was conducted on
29 and 30 August 2016.
The visit was an assessment
exercise to ascertain that the
teaching, learning and all other
related activities of the PBHD
Nursing programme provided by
NKF have met the quality standards
and are in compliance with the
Malaysian Qualification Framework.
NKF’s hope to attain the MQA
Accreditation of its PBHD Nursing
Programme came through when it
was awarded the Accreditation with
effect from 31 July 2017.
With this accreditation, more
haemodialysis nurses and their
employers will begin to recognise
the worth of NKF’s Post Basic
Haemodialysis Nursing Programme.

Two modules were presented at the programme as follows: -
1. Patients’ Safety; and 2. Jom! Live Positively
With regard to patients’ safety, the presentation was made by Puan Siti Noor Fauziah, the NKF Risk Assistant Manager. The talk covered a patient’s role in self-care management covering two aspects, which are health management (diet and medicine adherence, adequate dialysis treatment and effective communication with healthcare providers) and infection control (hygience, in-centre infection control, and disaster prepareness).
In the case of the motivational
talk which was presented by Puan
Fadillah Hanim Ariff, a registered
pschologist and counselor, she
touched on how the patient/
caregiver copes with life in relation to
dialysis and the importance of social
support especially from the loved
ones.
To enliven the programme,
a “Kidney Friendly Breakfast
Competition” was held with the main
purpose to engage the patients
and their care-givers in a fun and
interative atmosphere.
To make the competition more exciting and challenging, the patients and their care-givers had to answer diet-related questions at the game station to get food ingredients and cooking utensils.
The breakfast prepared was
consequently judged among other criteria on taste, presentation, hygiene, nutrition content and teamwork.
NKF thanked all the volunteers and staff members from Pusat Rawatan Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra -NKF (Kangar) for the success in organizing the programme.
Patients’ and Caregivers’ Activity: “Taking Care of YOU” was an educational programme jointly organized by the Public Education and Welfare Departments of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia for the patients and care-givers of Pusat Rawatan Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra -NKF (Kangar) on 10 December 2017.
The programme held at the dialysis centre was aimed to:
1. Educate on patients’ self-care management;
2. Motivate/inspire patients to live positively.
3. Engage patients and caregivers in a fun and interative way on the diet management.

The Ups & Downs Of Life
A person’s character is greatly influenced and moulded by the circumstances he has undergone in life. These are what that have enabled Alwi Bin Yaacob to weather his fortunes up till now.
Alwi was born and raised in Ulu Yam Baru, Selangor, to a smallholder’s family of 3 children. For the initial five years in his life, he enjoyed a care-free life until his mother passed away. Thereafter, he had to fend much for himself with his father who never re-married toiling to provide sustenance for both of them, while two older siblings had grown up and left the small town in search of their fortunes.
After completing his secondary school education, he started working and was heading for a bright future with a good job as a marketing executive but was involved in 1977 with a bad accident which killed his colleague.
of feeling nauseous and having headaches. He was immediately referred to Hospital Selayang where he was warded and subject to a series of laboratory tests. The medical tests confirmed that both his kidneys had failed. He was immediately placed on haemodialysis and his condition improved tremendously.
However, he was advised by the hospital authorities to have his dialysis done in the long term at one of the dialysis centres.
His son after surveying the different dialysis centres applied for him to be placed at Pusat Dialisis NKF – Dato’ Dr. G. A. Sreenevasan (Petaling Jaya) and he was within a short-while admitted.
He is thankful to have his dialysis at the centre saying, “It is indeed a great joy for me to be receiving dialysis in NKF where I have been well taken care of by the staff and
Arising from the accident, he was assigned to a lighter job which involved less travelling. Since then, he began to suffer from bouts of illnesses, requiring frequent visits to government clinics with the result that he left his job to become self-employed as a contractor.
With no end to his visits to the government clinic and as age was catching up he succumbed to diabetes in 2005 at the age of 58.
Ultimately, in December 2010 in one of his visits to the clinic in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, the doctor in attendance came across swelling of his stomach and legs after hearing him complain
treated with great friendship by fellow patients”.
Other than the inconvenience of having to undergo dialysis for four hours per session for three times a week, he does not find any change in the social behavior of his friends who visit him off and on.
On top of it all, his family though initially saddened by his affliction by the disease has taken it in its stride. Further, his daughter-in-law successfully in 2016 secured financial assistance from Baitulmal to pay for the cost of dialysis.
Today at the age of 70 he has fully retired and is happy with his hobbies of planting orchids
in addition to enjoying doing light household chores.
Kidney transplant can be a long-term solution for many kidney patients. Unfortunately, 21,759 people are currently on the waiting list for a kidney transplant with the number of kidney failure patients increasing every year. For many of these patients, organ donation has made finding suitable donors difficult.
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia has launched an organ donation promotion unit at Sunway Pyramid with the support of Sunway Group.
Members of the public who wish to pledge their organs can contact the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) for more information or to pledge their organs. The NTRC can be reached by calling 03 – 2681 0681/2, Toll Free: 1800-88-9080 or by emailing [email protected].

Collaboration In Health Screening Under
Enhanced Primary Healthcare (EnPHC)
During the months of July
& September 2017 – January
2018, NKF carried out a joint
pilot health screening exercise
called Enhanced Primary
Healthcare at various locations
in Selangor and Johor. This
exercise was brought to
fruition by the Malaysia Health
Promotion Board (MySihat).
Under this exercise, the NKF
mobile health screening teams
carried out the preliminary
health checks either onboard
the buses of the health check
teams or on the grounds near
the clinics. These checks
covered essentially blood
pressure readings, urine
tests for diabetes and kidney
diseases and measurements
in body mass indices, all of
which were rounded up with
counselling. Those individuals
after undergoing such tests
and readings which were
considered abnormal were
referred to the medical
personnel at the clinics, who
would take follow-up tests to
confirm as to whether such
persons were afflicted with
diabetes and hypertension
which are the precursors of
chronic kidney disease. By
so doing, the progression in
chronic kidney disease would
remain stagnant or be slowed
down leading thus to less
people being afflicted with
CKD.
Following the collaboration,
three mobile health screening
teams in Selangor and Johor,
each comprising 7 persons
were deployed at the various
locations of the states
concerned.
Arising from the
collaborative exercise over the
six-month period, the NKF
mobile health screening teams
checked the health condition of
1,452 persons, making thereby
under this pilot scheme prompt
confirmation and treatment for
kidney diseases or ailments.

In November 2017, a woman of
60 holding a bouquet of flowers stood
elegantly beside a girl with a mortar
board and red gown, clutching three
bouquets of flowers at the grounds of
Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang.
The lady was Madam Beng Chu
Soon with her only child and daughter,
Seow Wen Li, who was born in 1993
when Madam Beng was helping to
supplement the family income with her
job as an operator in a factory in Penang.
However, with the winds of economic
downturn in the manufacturing sector
blowing in Penang in 1994, Madam
Beng soon found herself joining the line
of retrenched workers and without much
headway became a housewife, while her
husband worked as a contractor. From
then onwards, the family eased through
the routine of life until 1996 when
Madam Beng often experienced bouts
of tiredness and had to seek medical
treatment.
As a consequence, she had to
undergo a series of tests which in
1997 conclusively confirmed that her
two kidneys had failed. She, therefore,
had to undergo haemodialysis and was
consequently for her life-long treatment
of the disease admitted to Pusat Dialisis
NKF- Kelab Lions Alor Setar, where she
has been a patient since.
When she was stricken by the
chronic kidney disease, her daughter
was only 4 years. Since Madam Beng,
her mother and her siblings were
closely knitted they helped to look
after the daughter, while financial
assistance from SOCSO in the
form of “pencen ilat” for RM700 a
month partly covers the cost of her
dialysis.
As her child was growing, she
had to attend school, while Madam
Beng had to go for her dialysis.
Madam Beng would send the girl to
school and on days when she had
her dialysis her friends and siblings
would help in getting the child home
from school.
For her financially strapped
family, Madam Beng was able to
cope while her husband carried on his
contractor’s work.
However, sadly while their lives were
on even keel, Madam Beng’s husband
was killed in 2007 in a motor accident.
Already undergoing hardship and
starved of money, the sole breadwinner
of the household was gone.
With the daughter in secondary
school, Madam Beng’s siblings and
mother stepped up their efforts in helping
her and the child. The child grew up to
be obedient and well-behaved and did
well academically.
With costs of living going up and
higher expenses incurred especially for
the daughter in upper secondary school,
the daughter resorted to providing tuition
to obtain money to pay partly for both
Madam Beng’s and her own sustenance.
Ultimately, with her good results,
Seow Wen Li was able to secure a
place in Universiti Putra Malaysia and to
finance her university education she was
able to obtain a PTPTN study loan.
To-date, Madam Beng together with
the assistance from her relatives, friends
and organisations can proudly announce
that in the face of multiple whammies
she has successfully raised a self-reliant
child to face her own world.

On a sunny Saturday morning of 9 December
2017, a group of Harley-Davidson riders rumbled
onto the grounds of National Kidney Foundation
(NKF) of Malaysia headquarters, all for a good
cause.
The Kelab Motorsikal Helang Malaysia,
commonly known as HTC MC successfully raised
RM38,500 to purchase a Dialysis Machine for
NKF. The dialysis machine was presented by the
founding committee member, Mr. Tou G, to NKF
CEO Mr. Chua Hong Wee witnessed by the rest of
the members present.
After 5 years of riding Harley-
Davidsons, the club continues
its charitable work with the
contribution of a dialysis machine
to NKF, which will inevitably help
the needy.
This motorcycle club was
formed by a small group of riding
friends who were passionate
about riding Harley-Davidsons.
Through the regular rides
and charity events, the bond
of friendship and brotherhood
within HTC MC remains strong.
We would like to extend our
heartfelt gratitude to The Kelab
Motorsikal Helang Malaysia for
its generous and charitable heart
in aid of the National Kidney
Foundation of Malaysia.
