1. For centuries China had a good balance of trade with more exports than imports. China’s trade surplus was from selling silk porcelain and tea in exchange for gold and silver. The western countries had a trade deficit by buying more than was sold to China. 2.

CHAP 9.5 CHINA AND THE NEW IMPERIALISM3. British began selling opium grown in India for tea. China wanted to stop drug trade but Britain refused which led to the Opium War of 1839.4. After the war Britain got a huge indemnity, or payment, which include Hong Kong. Also British citizens were given extra territoriality, giving them right to live under British laws and tried in own courts.

OPIUM WARSChinese were addicted and the Government wanted British to stop importing opium.

As a result the two countries went to war.

7. After China’s defeat, countries carved up “spheres of influence”. America wanted to be included so it suggested this policy, making trade available to everyone on an equal basis.
