Early Childhood

List key facts here, but avoid a laundry list. Remember what this person is famous for and collect facts that are relevant to that accomplishment. If he was a boxer and his childhood cat was named Fluffy, that’s not relevant. If the cat’s name was Boxing Ring, that’s more relevant.

But … like what Q’s do I ask?

Basic background info (siblings, birth city, nicknames, schools…)

What experiences did s/he have that led them to their fame?

Are there anecdotes (short stories) that give insight as to traits that helped them later be successful?

A sample early childhood paragraph is on the next slide.

Inspiring many people to become lawyers, Thurgood Marshall forever changed society around the world in his effort to establish equality.

Born on July 2nd, 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland, “Thoroughgood” Marshall lived an exciting childhood. His name was changed to Thurgood in second grade because he did not like writing such a long name (Whitelaw, 23). Marshall constantly disobeyed rules in elementary school, but he managed to maintain an average of a B. Attending Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1925, Marshall thoroughly enjoyed social clubs, and he graduated in 1930 (Whitelaw, 59). Marshall then went to Howard University Law School to pursue his ambition to be a lawyer. Putting all his effort into learning, he graduated at the top of his class in 1933 (Encyclopedia Britannica Online). Marshall met Vivian "Buster" Burey shortly afterward, and he married her on September 4th, 1929 (Aldred).

Accomplishments

Again, keep in mind what they are famous for and collect information that is relevant to their fame. Record here what they had success in.

Many influential people had failures in their lives that motivated them. These failures, if relevant, should be recorded in the early childhood section.

Thurgood Marshall achieved many things throughout his interesting career. In 1933, he opened a small law office where people could discuss their problems and bring them to court (Aldred). At first, nobody came, but gradually he had more business. Marshall won many of his early cases, and because of this, he became eligible to work in the NAACP, or the National American Association for the Colored People (Aldred, 83). He soon was promoted to the rank of Chief of Legal Staff due to the fact that he won many important cases, and he spoke eloquently (Encyclopedia Britannica Online). One of his most famous cases, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, occurred afterward. Trying to stop inequality, it was probably his most famous case (Feldman, 48). It stated that there would be no segregation in public schools and declared (Jones, 2) segregated schools unconstitutional; however, it did not say when it would take effect (Aldred, 89). Soon after, Marshall was appointed the coveted rank of Supreme Court Justice because the government had noticed that he was gifted as a lawyer. The Senate voted 69-11 to approve him, and on October 2nd, 1967, Marshall took the oath of office. Soon, he was promoted to the rank of Solicitor General. As a result, he was the first black to do so. Marshall’s salary was cut, but he vowed that he would still rather serve the president than do anything else (Aldred, 90). Because of old age, Marshall soon retired. By doing many significant things that changed history, he received many awards, some of which were the Spingarn Medal, Russwurm Award, Iota Lambda Award, and the Sorority Medal (Notable Black American Men).

Sadly, Marshall died of heart failure on January 24th, 1993 (Whitelaw, 104).

Thurgood Marshall will be known greatly because of his effort for "advancement of race relations" (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Marshall made blacks feel better by creating a new world for them. He "demolished the intellectual and legal basis for the system of racial segregation" (Notable Black American Men). Marshall greatly increased the similarity between blacks and whites, and the amount of injustice was reduced significantly. Marshall was a "symbol of hope and courage," and Marshall "made an immense contribution to the foundation of American justice" (Aldred, 121). Through his law cases, America started realizing that all people are equal and that nobody should be treated better than anyone else. Marshall was known for keeping his opinion of equal justice, and as a result, he was a "steadfast liberal during his tenure on the court" (Encyclopedia Britannica Online). Marshall changed the way people of different races thought about each other, and he "epitomized the potential of American democracy" (Notable Black American Men). Marshall will always be known for his fairness and determination to establish equality between every race around the world. Affecting people's lives of all races, Thurgood Marshall forever changed history and society through all his effort to demolish injustice.

Bibliography

This is where you record all the sources from which you collected your information. Remember to record your bibliography when collecting your information. Attempting to find the source after you have put it away is a waste of time and in some cases impossible.

Remember to record the page number of any fact you record in your notes.
