AGE CONCERN AUCKLANDA trip to the opera may conjure up images of stuffiness, exclusivity and big city theatres, attended regularly by the same ‘opera’ crowd. But times are changing and opera is starting to enjoy a renaissance in the big cities and regions alike. Driving Miss Daisy was proud to support the production of Carmen held during the popular Napier Art Deco festival this February. They promoted the opera to their client base, and organised a fleet of vehicles to transport people to and from the event free of charge, as well as providing a light supper. In total, eleven Driving Miss Daisy vehicles transported 100 theatre-goers.Many people who enjoyed the Driving Miss Daisy hospitality were already clients, however a number had never used the service before as they still drive. Those who were new to Driving Miss Daisy commented that they were pleased they had tried the service as they don’t like to drive at night, they worried about parking, they could not see at night, or they often didn’t have a friend to go out with. Using Driving Miss Daisy on this occasion was a wonderful way for them to experience the excellent service and enjoy a night out with a group of likeminded people.Feedback from this was extremely positive. Many were grateful for the thoughtful Daisy Drivers who dropped them right outside the theatre. Others commented that they would never normally choose to go to the opera, but it was a wonderful experience. Some people who were collected in the same car had never met before; Driving Miss Daisy was excited to hear that since the evening they had become firm friends and were meeting for lunch or coffee. And everyone commented on the high quality service that Driving Miss Daisy and their drivers provided. If you’d like to organise an outing for a group of friends, whether it’s during the day or evening, please call your local Driving Miss Daisy to discuss.

I received a call last week from a producer on TV3’s ‘The AM Show’. They were asking me to comment on a case in the Bay of Plenty where an elderly couple had taken their daughter to court to recoup and unpaid loan of over $350,000. It was a story that had made the national news and they wanted to know if it was unusual, or if this kind of thing happened often but largely went unreported. I explained them that, what was unusual in this case was that the parents had decided enough was enough and had taken legal action to get the loan repaid - that and the size of the loan. As I told them though, the sad reality was that financial abuse occurs in many forms and is alarmingly commonplace, but that more often than not those on the receiving end of abuse or neglect have neither the financial capacity to fight back, nor the emotional energy to do so. After we had spoken for ten minutes-or-so, I was asked if I’d be happy to come down to the studio the following morning to do a live interview.

That was why, last Thursday I found myself in make-up just after six in the morning ready to talk simultaneously on live TV and radio.

The reason that I was invited down to the studio is that as I talked to the producer she began to understand that elder abuse and neglect was a major issue in New Zealand, but that it was one that received scant attention or coverage. To their credit TV3 abandoned their original limited focus and ran a piece on the broader issue of elder abuse and neglect, the size of the problem and what we could do about it. Now I talk about the subject often but even I am stunned every time I hear myself trot out some of the stark statistics. Almost 1-in-10 of all over 65s across New Zealand will experience some form of abuse or neglect. It is almost beyond belief that a country that prides itself on its tolerance, on its social connectedness, that a country that sees

Hello and a warm welcome to you this winter. We hardly had any autumn and have found ourselves bang in winter. Hope all of you are warm with your woollies, blankets and heaters. Even though it is the coldest time of the year please remember to open your windows from time to time. This will help remove stale air from the room and bring in the energizing fresh air. This is particularly helpful in getting rid of some bugs and lifting our morale on the whole.

Speaking of morale - it is right up at the offices of Age Concern Auckland. We have our new staff now settled into their work. They are now ready to work alongside our experienced staff in their commitment to reach out to our clients. The staff are flexing their muscles in experimenting different ways in which we reach out to the wider elderly community.

With the Elder Abuse Awareness Week in mid June please keep an eye out for anyone who would need help. The volunteering week is also approaching and I take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers we have contributing to the success of Age Concern Auckland. Many thanks to our funders to enable us to make it. Without the help of these wonderful people so much would not be achieved.

Now for some personal news we have been blessed with a grandson. We are enjoying our time with the little one. The parents have named him Jai and he is a true bundle of joy.

I end my note wishing you well and thanking you for your support towards Age Concern Auckland.

Best regards,

Anuradha (Anu) AbhyankarChair, Age Concern Auckland

itself as highly civilised can allow this to happen.

On June 15th it will be World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and Age Concern’s across New Zealand will be out on the streets, in the shopping malls, in our hospitals, in the press - anywhere we can get people to listen - to do our best to get the message out that the abuse and neglect of older people is not okay. We don’t need to tolerate it, we shouldn’t tolerate it. We will be telling everyone that if they have any concerns, they must talk to someone and, if in doubt, to contact their local Age Concern.

We spend most of the year focused on providing direct support to those that need it, or providing advice to those that ask for it. However, on June 15th we make no apology for the fact that we’ll be focused on getting a bit ‘shouty’. Normal service will resume on the 16th.

Albert Chant turns 100Albert Chant turned 100 on April 12. He still lives independently in his own home in West Auckland. Albert has been a client of Age Concerns Visiting Service since January 2010 and is pictured right with his volunteer visitor Irving Semp, who has been visiting Albert on a weekly basis for 7 years. Albert is a wonderful example of how to age positively, someone we can all aspire to be like as we get older.

His magnificent cake was donated by Gillian Bannan of the Waitakere Cake Decorating Club.

Personal Choices Are Affordable

Our new address: 14 Bassant Ave, Penrose

Just Funerals: an affordable, personal choice when we are faced with the death of a loved one, our thinking processes are in turmoil. Yet many decisions, particularly concerning funeral arrangements have to be made quickly, and very often the cost seems like a giant obstacle. If only someone could lighten the load.

Vicky and Steven Davey established Just Funerals four years ago partly because they felt they could offer more affordable funeral options for people struggling to cope with difficult times. They have formulated a pricing structure designed to keep costs down without compromising any of the ways you honour and remember your loved ones. The costs structure is totally transparent, and can often halve the cost of funeral expenses - be it a simple cremation, private or chapel service.

How can funerals be more affordable? Steven says they have been able to rationalise each component cost, for example, at out Penrose Funeral Home we have a small chapel to seat 25 people. For larger services or services in you area we can use Council Chapels, Churches, Community Facilities - or anywhere that is suitable for a Funeral Service.

Options and costs are spelt out plainly in Just Funeral’s brochures and website. Included in their options is an MDF casket which is both environmentally considerate and affordable.

Steven holds the National Diploma in Funeral Directing, and their son Oliver is part of a caring family team. They are available 24/7 - you will not be answered by a message service.

CARE AT HOME A PREFERRED CHOICESometimes we need a little more support than family or friends can offer. Whether it’s post-operative convalescence, palliative or general care at home, deciding what support is needed and where to find it can be challenging. The staff at New Zealand’s longest running private homecare provider, Miranda Smith Homecare, know how difficult these decisions can be.

Owner, Miranda Smith says: “People may be in crisis when they contact us, or they may require our services to assist with and plan their recovery from illness or injury. Whatever the reason, we believe choosing the right support is critical. Peace of mind comes with knowing the correct care is in place, in the familiar surroundings of home with family and friends nearby. This dramatically impacts recovery and helps to maintain independence”.

Miranda Smith Homecare offers a highly professional, caring and above all else, trustworthy service. Staff have the experience to ensure the stress of requiring in-home assistance doesn’t become a burden for those needing such support. When at-home care is your preferred choice, contact Miranda Smith Homecare, New Zealand’s most experienced private homecare provider.

Auckland BluesYou may remember in the last edition of the Age Concern Auckland Newsletter we covered a story about a visit by members of the Auckland Blues rugby team coming to see us. It turns out that the Blues were impressed by what they heard and what they saw, because shortly after their visit we were contacted by them again with a slightly unusual offer - ‘would you like some of the squad for a few hours’.

Now it is not every day you get an offer like that, but who are we to turn down such generosity!

In all seriousness, when the players came to visit they did so as part of their community engagement work, and full credit to the Blues for putting so much emphasis on community. They asked us just to share with the players who we were, what we did, but most importantly why we needed to be here at all. As we talked to them about all the work we do, from addressing severe loneliness and isolation, offering advice and a helping hand, and advice to those that need it, to supporting those who are suffering from abuse and neglect, you could see a visible change come over the faces of the players. Remembering, these are hard men, trained to be physically resilient but as they heard the stories of loneliness and of suffering they were struggling to keep their emotions in check. What was most meaningful about the offer of ‘some of the squad’, was the fact that this wasn’t some shadowy management figure in the Blues set up deciding the players must do something, this was a decision taken by the players themselves.

So we will be welcoming the Blues back and this time you are all invited. On the morning of June 21st we will be hosting an informal event at the Glen Eden RSA out in West Auckland, and we’re inviting all our members, visitors, clients and friends to come along too (or at least however many we can fit in the venue!). We can’t guarantee which players will be there - apparently it all depends on who has been called up to which international squads - shockingly it seems that playing for the All Blacks against the Lions may have precedence over Age Concern!! - but

Leaving a lasting legacyGive a little, leave a little?New Zealand is a country of givers, a generous people who are only too willing to support those who need a little help. Over 80% of us give during our lifetimes and yet maybe as few as 5% leave something to organisations we value, trust and appreciate. Many of us are keen to support our favourite organisations while we are alive but strangely fail to put in place any instructions to support the same organisations when we pass on.

There are many organisations across New Zealand that rely either partly or solely on the generosity of the public to continue to develop and deliver many of the services we have come to rely on, and take for granted. Age Concern is no different. Bequests, the leaving of something in a will, is a key element in how such organisations are funded. So why do so few of us do it?

One obvious thing is the simple fact that only 50% of New Zealander’s have a Will at all. The main reasons we give for not sorting our Will out are “I do not have enough money”, “I am too young” and “I do not have enough time”. Many of us are serial procrastinators when it comes to sorting our Will out. Many of us also simply do not want to confront the prospect of death. However if we don’t confront the issue we’re simply ignoring a reality and allowing someone else do deal with how our money and possessions are disposed of.

Wills, Trusts & EPOA’sWhat are two things we cannot avoid in our life no matter how hard we try? People say taxes and death are the things that they are inevitable. The former is not a hard topic of conversation whereas the latter is something few of us ever talk about. What if you become unable to look after yourself or make decisions about your own affairs? Unfortunately, it is apparent that there are many uncertainties or misfortunes which can lead to sudden death or incapacitation. By planning ahead you will make the financial, legal and practical consequences of death and illness much easier for your family to deal with.

Making a will A Will is a legal document that states your wishes and disposes of your property on your death. Having a will makes it easier on your loved ones who need you at a time when they will be grieving. Also, a proper and valid will is the cornerstone of your estate planning. If you pass away without leaving a will, your loved ones are likely to face difficulty sorting out your wishes. Dying without a will could put your families into legal and financial difficulties. This may not be what you think or what you want.

Setting up a trust You do not have to be a millionaire to set up a family trust. Trusts are all about advanced planning. Trusts are frequently used in estate planning for several advantages and benefits. These include protecting family members with special needs, creditor protection, protection against relationship property claims and protecting assets for future generations from law changes. In fact, a will is not a substitute for a trust

because a will comes into effect only after you pass away, by which time you might have lost a significant portion of your assets to the risks of the world. Thus, a family trust acts as a buffer between the risks of the world and your assets. By gifting your assets into a well-structured trust in advance, you could gain a significant measure of protection from potential risks.

Enduring Power of AttorneyA power of attorney is a legal document that gives someone the power to act for you if you are unable to act for yourself. Unlike an ordinary power of attorney, an enduring power of attorney (generally referred to an EPOA) can have effect if you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself or to communicate your decisions. An enduring power of attorney usually comes into force only when you have become mentally incapable of managing your own affairs. Having an enduring power of attorney is a way of making sure that the person trusted, will make decisions for you. There are two types of enduring power of attorney: EPOA for personal care and welfare and EPOA for property. The former can only come to effect when you lose mental capacity whereas the latter can come into effect immediately or only when you lose mental capacity.

In our lifetime, we never know what is around the corner. Thus, it is advisable to set up an estate and care planning in advance, nominating who can make decisions for us in the event of an accident, illness, loss of mental capacity or death. By taking control now through the above ways, we can save time, money and unnecessary stress on our loved ones.

It may also surprise you to hear that only 7.5% of those that do have a Will have chosen to leave anything to a good cause. So why don’t more of us do it?

Many of us don’t think we’ve got much to give. The reality is that even a little can make a difference. We don’t have to have thousands to make a difference, if enough of us leave small amounts it all adds up to a great deal. Many of us are also concerned at the impact leaving anything to a good cause may have on our family. Leaving something to charity in our Will can be done in all sorts of ways. We can leave a fixed amount or we can leave a percentage of whatever’s left after all other provisions and expenses have been taken care of.

Here at Age Concern we’ve partnered with our friends at Perpetual Guardian to try to make the process of preparing a Will as easy and affordable possible. Firstly, we’ve organised a fixed low-cost price for sorting a Will out - as little as $50 for a simple, straightforward Will. Secondly, we’ve arranged with them that as part of the service they will come out to you, to discuss your needs and desires and help you with every step of the process.

If you’d like more information on how you can create a new Will, or make changes to the one you already have, let us know and we’ll arrange for Perpetual Guardian to get in touch.

Soups - A quick and healthy meal solutionThere are many important health and nutritional reasons to reach for a bowl of delicious soup - they provide vitamins, antioxidants and some varieties can help add fibre to the diet too. Plus many soups are packed with vegetables helping you reach your daily goal of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables!Soups come in so many varieties that the actual nutrient composition differs depending on the ingredients used, but here are some examples of the goodness that soups can provide:• Tomato soup is a good source of vitamin A, B’s, C and the powerful antioxidant called lycopene.• Pumpkin soup is also packed with potassium and Vitamin A• Sweetcorn and Potato soup is a great fibre boost• Minestrone soups can contain as many as 8-10 different vegetablesSoups are also a great way to increase fluid intakes over the colder winter months when it is less appealing to drink cold water. The great news is soup is not only a good way to boost your intake of nutrients but it fits perfectly within a healthy balanced diet too. A bowl or mug of soup with a couple of slices of wholegrain toast is a meal generally low in fat. More and more it is becoming important to lower energy and fat intakes to help lessen the risk of becoming overweight or obese.

Call to membersThis year the team at Age Concern Auckland have looked critically at our own services. How effective they are, how many people they reach and how well they reflect our community. This research, including asking all of our Members directly what they saw as important, has enabled us to develop a clear picture of where we need to expand our current services, improve the existing way in which we do things or develop new services to reflect the changing community. As a result, we have been very active in addressing both the challenges and opportunities we faced.

With the help of our Members, we have been able to recruit more social workers to help support our most vulnerable older people living in our communities. We have now launched our new Chinese Service which will make our existing services culturally appropriate for the older Chinese community. Thank you!

This winter, we would like your help again. Would you be willing to recruit new Members to Age Concern Auckland? Make a donation? Host a coffee morning in aid of our social workers and donate the proceeds? It costs us almost $700,000 each year to deliver our services, with only a third coming from the government. That means we rely on the generosity of our community to help us raise $500,000 each year.If you can help, you can get started right away. There are both Membership and Donation forms on the back of this newsletter.

Alternatively, if you would like more information or newsletters to help get you started, please contact Karen in our office on (09) 820 0184. She would love to hear from you!

“A mobility scooter” - also referred to as battery-operated electric scooter - is very useful to persons who lack the stamina to cover distances on their own, or who want to keep up with the able-bodied. The type of use, and how often, will determine which model will be most appropriate.

3-wheeled mobility scooters are ideal for use indoors (rest homes, shopping centres, supermarkets) as they have a smaller turning circle, and technological advances have significantly improved their stability. 4-wheeled mobility scooters obviously offer the most stability, however, they are not as manoeuvrable as the 3-wheeler scooters.

Most mobility scooters require reinforced vans to move them around; otherwise the user is limited to the distance of the scooter and no more. This makes scooters expensive when requiring a taxi, not possible on bus, train or plane, and not easy to “take grandparents somewhere for the day”. The Tzora Elite, Classic and Lite are foldable and

portable 3 and 4-wheeled mobility scooters - simple yet ingenious, ergonomically designed and fold in seconds without effort, bending or tools required. Their total weight including battery is up to 31kgs and they fit easily in the back of a small car, a taxi, a train or bus, or checked onto a plane. They are IATA-approved to travel with you everywhere you want to go. The Titan 3 and Titan 4 are respectively heavier 3 & 4-wheel models, are larger and more powerful, providing performance and comfort and they cover a greater distance. Yet both are detachable and foldable as well, and can also be transported in a car, bus, train or plane. A Tzora mobility scooter will bring back your independence, and remove your mobility problems for long or short journeys. For more information on Tzora’s portable and foldable mobility scooters phone Tzora Mobility NZ Ltd today on 0800 000 652

What is elder abuse and neglect?Elder Abuse and Neglect is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.

10 tips to promote respect and prevent abuse• Love and cherish your older relatives/whānau• Speak respectfully to older people/kaumātua• Include older people/kaumātua in your social activities• Phone or visit your older relatives/whanau• Support older people/kaumātua to spend their money how they wish• Encourage and support older people/kaumātua to make their own decisions• Honour older people’s/kaumātua’s wisdom• Enable older people/kaumātua to set their own pace• Respect older people’s/kaumātua’s stories• Seek advice from an Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Service when you think an older person/kaumātua is being abused or neglected

Older people are a valuable part of our society and should be treated with dignity and respect – yet every year, thousands of older New Zealanders are being abused by in many cases by family members. It’s our collective responsibility as a community to ensure that older people are always respected, never abused.

Age Concern’s Elder Abuse & Neglect Prevention Service aims to improve the quality of life of older people in abusive situations and to prevent abuse by providing information, education programmes, advocacy and support.

If you or an older person/kaumātua you know is being abused contact your nearest Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Service.

Unfortunately Age Concern elder abuse statistics show:• More than three quarters of alleged abusers are family members• More than half of the alleged abusers are adult children and grandchildren• Alleged abusers are as likely to be female as male

Thank you for your ongoing support to ensure that we can continue supporting older people living in our communities.

THANKS TO OUR WONDERFUL SUPPORTERS

Age Concern Auckland works with thousands of older people, their families/whanau, and organisations across Central and West Auckland - from those simply seeking advice and guidance to our most vulnerable elderly who are living in our communities.

It costs us almost $700,000 every year to deliver these crucial services to our community. We receive about one third of the necessary funding from the government. This means that we rely on the generosity of our local community to provide almost $500,000 each year.

We’re dedicated to helping everyone make the most of getting older and we simply couldn’t do that without help from our supporters.

On behalf of the Board and Staff of Age Concern Auckland, we would like to thank all those who have supported us over the last year:

• Auckland Council• BlueSky Community Trust• Foundation North• Four Winds Foundation• Grassroots Trust• Lion Foundation• NZ Lottery Grants• Sir John Logan Campbell Residuary Trust• SKYCITY Community Trust• Ted & Mollie Carr and Ernest Hyam Davis Charitable Trust• The Trusts Community Foundation• Tranzdev Auckland• Working Together More Fund• All our individual supporters who gave us donations – every dollar counts! • All our wonderful volunteers, who collectively give more than 200 hours every single week
