World Day of the Poor

The official logo for World Day of the Poor shows an open red door with two figures on either side. Both figures have their hands outstretched to reach for the other. The benefit of the encounter goes both ways and as we stretch our hands to help the poor, in turn “with their trust and readiness to receive help, they show us in a quiet and often joyful way, how essential it is to live simply and to abandon ourselves to God’s providence,” the pope said. Pope Francis’ message wishes to emphasize the encounter as an opportunity for evange- lization, as shown by the star depicted on the upper half of the logo. Pope Francis shares that this day “is meant, above all, to encourage believers to react against a culture of discard and waste, and to embrace the culture of encounter.” (Vatican Press Office 2017)

Peace and good! As you know, the Diocese of Arlington has asked us to support an increased offertory program during the fall months. The pastoral staff and Parish Advisory Council has selected the month of November for this program. During the month of November, you will receive the following information regarding this program:

• weekly bulletin column on the gift of stewardship – Time, Talent, Treasure;

• letter from the pastoral staff and Faith Direct focusing on the increased offertory program; and

• request from the pastoral team and Parish Advisory Council for each of us to reflect upon the time, talent, and treasure which we share with the parish community.

As shared in the previous reflection, we often speak of steward-ship in the context of "the three t's": time, talent, and treasure. Stewardship is a way of life and our relationship with Christ is at the heart of it all. I offer the following description of steward-ship – sharing talent:

Our talents are gifts from God. Good stewardship of talent means we identify our talents, and use them to glorify God and to help other people. We all have talents that we can use to help others, and help ourselves develop, grow, and share.

Pope Francis shares the following insight in regards to sharing our talents:

It means protecting people, showing loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about. (March 19, 2013)

There are many ways to share your talents here at St. Joseph Catholic Church:

Liturgical Ministries: We invite you to prayerfully re-flect on the gifts God has given you and consider sharing your talents for one of our liturgical ministries. Outreach Ministries: as you know, our par ish ministr ies assist our sisters and brothers in the local community and throughout the world with food drive; visiting the home-bound, nursing homes, and hospitals; collection of furni-ture, clothing, home goods; sponsorship of children and families; involvement in respect for life organizations; min-istering at local charities and organizations; and etc…

Fr. Tom’s Column Cont’d… Organizations associated with the Parish: We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the gifts God has given you and consider sharing your talents with one of the organizations associated with the parish.

Please visit the parish web site regarding the parish’s ministries. We read in Scripture, “There are different gifts but the same Spirit, there are different ministries but the same Lord … To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the com-mon good” (1 Corinthians, 12:4-7). In the peace of Francis of Assisi,

The Parish staff wishes to thank the following parish minis-tries: We thank each of our parishioners who share in the celebration of our faith, sacramental life, and “works of mercy” in the community. Many blessings during the autumn months! As we celebrate the World Day for the Poor, we thank the parishioners participating in the “works of mercy,” We thank our parishioners who donate to the Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Drive. A special thanks to the par ish-ioners who planned and oversee our partnership with the mis-sion. Many blessings. We thank our parishioners for their generous support of the St. Lucy Project and LINK throughout this past year . A spe-cial thanks to the parishioners who planned and oversee the food drives. The staff of the St. Lucy Project and LINK offer their sincere thanks to the SJC parishioners for our generosity to feeding our sisters and brothers in need throughout the 2017 year. Blessings! We thank our parishioners for their generosity and support of NPH USA which suppor ts Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for "Our Little Brothers and Sisters"). Your support of this organization assists the youth of Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Hondu-ras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. Know that they are grateful for your prayers and generosity. We thank our parishioners who supported the LINK and St. Lucy Food Drives, the Giving Tree, the Christians in Bethle-hem, HOPE bottle drive, the Father Beiting Appalachian Mis-sion, Catholic Charities, The Closet, and other projects throughout 2017. Your support is one way we as a parish live out the “works of mercy.” A special thanks to the parishioners who oversaw the planning and ministry involved with these “works of mercy.” Many blessings! May we each continue to respond to Pope Francis’ challenge on this World Day of the Poor: “Love not in word but deed!”

“The basis for the work of Catholic Charities is imi-tation of Christ. In the Gospels, Jesus identifies Himself strongly with the compassion for the poor and marginalized. When we give food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, and clothes to the naked, we are seeing the face of Christ in each of those we serve.” - Bishop Burbidge

A Thanksgiving Prayer – Samuel F. Pugh

O God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry; When I have work, help me to remember the jobless; When I have a home, help me to remember those who have no home at all; When I am without pain, help me to remember those who suffer, And remembering, help me to destroy my complacency; bestir my compassion, and be concerned enough to help; By word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted.

Amen.

Thanksgiving Day Mass is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. (there will be no 6:30 or 8:00 a.m. Masses, so that we all offer Thanks to God in a larger community setting.) We all have so much to be thankful for, for family, friends, and food, as well as for the countless other blessings God has given us. So please, feel free to bring something from your Thanksgiving table to be blessed. Tables will be near the sanctuary and after the homily the friars will bless the food. Don’t forget to take your food home after Mass and share the blessing with your family.

In Baptism we are reborn as children of God, made members of His Church, and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. With this in mind, we welcome these children of God who were baptized the weekend of November 12, 2017: Daniel Kuttikat son of Jiju and Rose; Alexander Onda son of Andrew & Danielle
