Pre WorldCatLocal Main search tools were SirsiDynix iBistro OPAC and Sirsi Resolver No federated search – relied on separate, external databases

Evaluation of new search tools Primo Encore AquaBrowser WorldCatLocal

The final decision was predominantly down to cost.

Positive outcomes Bringing together of different types of resources Search by keyword improved – no need for Boolean Easier to link records with the Virtual Learning Environment List functions available for reading lists and user’s own Some federated searching now available Refining searches easier/more intuitive Good extra location tool for inter-library loans

Usability testingPositive outcomes in many areas:

“I found WorldCatLocal easier to use than the old catalogue; I would recommend this.”

“It’s like searching Amazon…easier to use, the facets are good.”

Problems and issues Material type isn’t obvious enough and was ignored in usability testing by participants The interface doesn’t make it easy for a user to ascertain the extent of print/electronic

journal holdings Initially ebooks were referred to on the interface as Internet Resource – this has been

changed by OCLC as it was unhelpful and unclear Confusion due to two sign in options – for WorldCat and for underlying user information in

iBistro Major issues in known item searching – the algorithm is not suitable for academic library use FRBR does not work well
