Workshop - Meeting India, Brazil & South Africa Evidence and perspectives of international cooperation CEBRAP, February 15th, 2011 In the last years, a number of unprecedented agreements have been signed by countries of the now called ʻGlobal Southʼ. Among those agreements, the recent strengthening of diplomatic relations between India, Brazil and South Africa is a milestone. Nations with profoundly diverse trajectories and characteristics, these three democracies play nowadays central roles within their respective regions and occupy a position of increasing relevance in global economy and politics. The expanding multi-lateral trade, the deepening political dialogue and the widening of technical and scientific cooperation among the three countries represent not only new channels of interaction; they also inaugurate new ways to reflect, collectively, about the common challenges of India, Brazil and South Africa. Engaged in this debate, the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP) is organizing the workshop “India, Brazil & South Africa: evidence and perspectives of international cooperation”. The event will gather researchers from the three countries, who will present evidence and partial results of the collaborative project “State Society Relations in India, Brazil and South Africa - IBSA”. The project began in 2009 and has the support of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS - University of Sussex, England), the African Center for Citizenship and Development (University of the Western Cape, South Africa) and the Society for Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA, India). Outcomes of the project have recently been published in South Africa and the research group is now preparing a new round of collaborative research. The main objective of the meeting is to identify key points for the elaboration of a common research agenda in the three countries. The intention is to reflect upon forms of academic cooperation that may overcome the “exchange of experience” paradigm. In other words, we will be asking: How is it possible to expand the already existing academic cooperation between India, Brazil and South Africa beyond the mere exchange of knowledge and public policy-expertise? Can we think about more integrated forms of academic interchange, on which researchers from the three countries work together in themes common interest? Which topics, methods and procedures can be explored in the analysis of structural challenges in the three nations – such as enduring inequality or the proper offer of health and other public services? These and other questions will guide the meeting, which will also have the presence of a selected group of scholars and policy-makers involved in the cooperation between India, Brazil and South Africa. The event will be held in English. In the end there will be a cocktail for the dissemination of research material.

Workshop - Meeting

India, Brazil & South AfricaEvidence and perspectives of international cooperation

CEBRAP, February 15th, 2011

In the last years, a number of unprecedented agreements have been signed by countries of the now called ʻGlobal Southʼ.

In other words, we will be asking:

• How is it possible to expand the already existing academic cooperation between India, Brazil and South Africa beyond the mere exchange of knowledge and public policy-expertise?

• Can we think about more integrated forms of academic interchange, on which researchers from the three countries work together in themes common interest?

• Which topics, methods and procedures can be explored in the analysis of structural challenges in the three nations – such as enduring inequality or the proper offer of health and other public services?

These and other questions will guide the meeting, which will also have the presence of a selected group of scholars and policy-makers involved in the cooperation between India, Brazil and South Africa.

The event will be held in English. In the end there will be a cocktail for the dissemination of research material.
