Bands in Manchester, England; the All-Japan Band Conference in Nemo NuSato, Japan; the College Band Directors National Association Convention(twice); and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles inHamamatsu, Japan. Allan McMurray is a Past-President of the College BandDirectors National Association and a member of numerous professionalorganizations including the American Bandmasters Association.

With a strong commitment to new music, Allan McMurray has been aleader in commissioning numerous compositions by American composers.He has won praise for his interpretive and expressive conducting by manycomposers including Pulitzer Prize winners Michael Colgrass, George Crumb,John Harbison, Karel Husa, Joseph Schwanter and Steven Stucky.

Professor McMurray’s DVD series on the Art of Conducting includethree DVDs: “Conducting from the Inside Out: Gesture and Movement”;“Conducting from the Inside Out: Conductor and Composer with FrankTicheli” and the third “Kindred Spirits”. He is currently working on acompanion textbook to the DVD series. In December 2004, the Board ofRegents designated Allan McMurray as “Distinguished Professor”.

Jamie L. Nix is Director of Wind Ensemble Activitiesand Associate Professor of Music at the Columbus StateUniversity Schwob School of Music in Georgia. Dr. Nixconducts the CSU Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra,and teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting. Hepreviously served as Associate Director of Bands and theDonald R. Shepherd Assistant Professor of Conducting atthe University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre &

Dance. Prior to Michigan he was Assistant Director of Bands at The Universityof Texas at Austin Butler School of Music.

Nix holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from theUniversity of Miami Frost School of Music, where he studied with GaryGreen. He received Master of Music degrees in both Wind Conducting andTrombone Performance in from the University of Michigan, where he studiedconducting with H. Robert Reynolds and performed in Carnegie Hall for the100th Anniversary of the legendary Michigan Symphony Band. A native ofAlabama, Nix holds a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from AuburnUniversity.

Performances under Dr. Nix’s direction have won the praise of suchnotable composers as Robert Beaser, Donald Grantham, James Mobberley, andothers for his “exciting and compelling” performances that have “an excellentsense of emotional scope and shape.” Nix has conducted performances at theCollege Band Directors National Association North Central and SouthernDivision Conferences, the Georgia Music Educators Association Conference,and the International Trumpet Guild Conference, in addition to all-state andhonor bands in several states and Canada. In 2014 Nix will conduct theFlorida All-State Concert Band and the Music For All Summer Symposium.As an orchestral conductor he participated in the 2008 InternationalMahler/Brahms Conducting Festival with the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonicin the Czech Republic.

He is a conductor or producer on the following CDs: A Beautiful Noise,Wolf Rounds, The Blue Album, Brooklyn Bridge, The Victors Valiant, and willrelease a new CSU Wind Ensemble CD entitled Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs onthe Naxos label in 2014.

H. Robert Reynolds is the Principal Conductor of theWind Ensemble at the Thornton School of Music at theUniversity of Southern California where he holds the H.Robert Reynolds Professorship in Wind Conducting. Thisappointment followed his retirement, after 26 years, fromthe School of Music of the University of Michigan where heserved as the Henry F. Thurnau Professor of Music, Directorof University Bands and Director of the Division of

Instrumental Studies. He has also been, for over 30 years, the conductor ofThe Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings.

Robert Reynolds has conducted recordings for Koch International, ProArte, Caprice, and Deutsche Grammophon. In the United States, he hasconducted at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center (New York), Orchestra Hall(Chicago), Kennedy Center (Washington, D. C.), Powell Symphony Hall (St.Louis), Academy of Music (Philadelphia), and Disney Concert Hall (LosAngeles). In Europe, he conducted the premiere of an opera for La ScalaOpera (Milan, Italy), and concerts at the prestigious Maggio Musicale(Florence, Italy), the Tonhalle (Zurich, Switzerland), and at the HollandFestival in the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam, Holland), as well as the 750thAnniversary of the City of Berlin. He has won the praise of composers: LeslieBassett, William Bolcom, Aaron Copland, John Corigliano, Henryk Gorecki,Karel Husa, Gyorgy Ligeti, Darius Milhaud, Bernard Rands, Gunther Schuller,Karlheinz Stockhausen, and many others for his interpretive conducting oftheir compositions.

Robert Reynolds has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate fromDuquesne University, and in addition, holds degrees in Music Education andPerformance from the University of Michigan where he was the conductingstudent of Elizabeth Green. He began his career in the public schools ofMichigan and California before beginning his university conducting atCalifornia State University at Long Beach and the University of Wisconsinprior to his tenure at the University of Michigan.

Professor Reynolds is Past President of the College Band Directors'National Association and the Big Ten Band Directors' Association. He hasreceived the highest national awards from Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Kappa Psi, PhiBeta Mu, the National Band Association, and the American School BandDirectors’ Association, and he was awarded the “Medal of Honor” by theInternational Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic. He is the recipient of a“Special Tribute” from the State of Michigan, and he served for many years onthe National Awards Panel for the American Society of Composers, Authorsand Publishers (ASCAP) and in 2001 received a national award from thisorganization for his contributions to contemporary American music. He isalso listed in the New Groves Dictionary of American Music, and his frequentconducting appearances have included (among others) the Eastman School ofMusic, New England Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, NorthwesternUniversity, Manhattan School of Music, the Tanglewood Institute, and theDetroit Symphony Orchestra. Many of his former students now hold majorconducting positions at leading conservatories and universities, and severalhave been National Presidents of CBDNA.

Allan McMurray is the Robert and Judy CharlesEndowed Professor of Music, Chair of the ConductingFaculty, and Director of Bands at the University ofColorado-Boulder, a position he has held since 1978. Priorto this position, he was on the faculty of the University ofMichigan. Considered one of the world’s leading teachersof conducting, Professor McMurray has guest conductedand taught conductors in 45 states and 15 foreigncountries. He has been a featured visiting professor at over

200 universities and conservatories nationally. Former conducting studentscurrently hold professional positions throughout the US, Canada, Europe, andAsia.

Since Professor McMurray’s arrival in 1978, the University of ColoradoBands have distinguished themselves with performances at major conferencesand conventions, including The First International Conference for Symphonic
