Martín Ruiz AzúaMartín Ruiz Azúa graduated in 1995 from the University of Barcelona with a degree in Fine Arts and Design. Alongside his design practice, he teaches History of Design at the Elisava School in Barcelona. Ruiz Azúa is an uncompromising designer. Through his research, he arrives at almost immaterial forms that conceptually address ecological, economical, social and human aspects. Far from providing marketable solutions, his work questions, presents statements and ideas, and enlightens.

Plaited Fence•  by Martín Ruiz Azúa•   Casa Basica’ (1999) is a project about improvised urban dwelling. This proposal, which remained in a prototype phase, consists of a virtually weightless house – only 200 grams! – that fits into your pocket. It is made of metallic material that is used for survival blankets. The house inflates through your body heat or the heat of the sun, expanding to 8 m3. It is a dwelling fit for a life on the move without material ties. ‘Human Chair’ (2002) is a collective conceptual chair, that requires people to sit on each other’s laps – the ‘product’ is a collaborative activity rather than a proprietary thing.

•  Giving waste a new positive connotation is the underlying message of Ruiz Azúa’s ‘Plaited Fence’ – a fencing system for public space into which the public can plait waste materials like plastic bags, stray newspapers or coke bottles. This way, the waste floating around the city’s streets acquires an aesthetic second life, and the fence becomes a creative communal activity instead of a barren barrier.

Stefan Wewerka Stefan Wewerka is a German artist and architect. His work is multi-dimensional, ranging from fashion to film and from office furnishing to buildings. Beginning as an architect, Stefan Werweka later devoted himself to object art, where the desk and the chair have been his preferred mediums.The core of Stefan Wewerka’s work, irrespective of the medium used, is the need to explore the methods that can be used to create space around people. Apart from the originality of his building design, he is also well known for his many competition entries, which have given rise to both debate and inspiration among his colleagues.Stefan Werweka has for example worked with untraditional approaches to desk design. Although looking deceptively out of line, the Montana-manufactured Height Adjustable Work Desk has proven to be an optimal workspace, uniting the feeling of the meeting room with that of the individual work place.

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld Rietveld is often regarded as a ‘spontaneous genius’ who one day was able to create a red-blue chair and a Rietveld-Schröder house. That is an underrating of his thoughts and capabilities. One of his colleagues who certainly gave him his due was Aldo van Eyck who, in an article, wrote: “I admire Rietveld for his artistic skills, the magnificent things he made during his Stijl period. For the way in which he personally created a new architecture language which successfully evolved into what Mondriaan and Van Doesburg had in mind: a liberating human habitat, an environment which has taken shape in such a way that it would not give rise to anything frustrating.” Rietveld, from his lecture in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht: “In order for the transition and study to be released from tradition, tender and pure enough to be able to be the background and breeding ground for the new life, many ambitions had to be sung and whole-heartedly overcome again. De Stijl and the Bauhaus have done a lot in this respect. De Stijl almost scientifically searched for the elements of vision. We tried to find the most elementary things, the infinitesimal visual perceptions, we anatomised white light into 3 colours to which our eyes are sensitive, and we thought that the perception of red was an infinitesimal perception and thus a pure primary and elementary feeling. Those were the feelings we acted on”.

Military Table•  by Gerrit Rietveld•  As you can see from the joints between the legs and stretchers, Rietveld designed this table in the same style as the military chair. The table top is not connected directly to the longitudinal stretchers but to narrow crosspieces above them, this creates a light spatious construction. Rietveld began experimenting with this type of spatial constuction in a table for the house of B. de Ligt in 1918.

Steltman•  by Gerrit Rietveld•  L50 Χ D45 Χ H40/70 cm•  Rietveld began and ended his career as an architect with the same kind of a commission, namely renovating a jewelry shop. The chairs for the jeweler Steltman were mirror images of each other and originally covered in white leather. The asymmetric form does not close off the space but has the open structure that Rietveld was already trying to use in all of his furniture pieces in the years 1918 to 1924.

Berlin•  by Gerrit Rietveld•  L57 x W71.5 x H45/100 cm•  Around 1923 Rietveld introduced two new formal elements in his furniture designs: these were asymmetry and constructions with flat panels. Both of these formal elements can be arrived at by consistently thinking through the consequences of a previous exercise, namely how to create an open spatial structure from equally valued elements. The ‘Berlin chair’ gets its name because it was specially designed for the exposition room by Rietveld and Huszar in the show in Berlin in 1923. This chair, which later was frequently referred to as ‘the plank chair’, was executed with a mirror image twin.

Carlo Santambrogio & Ennio ArosioThe collection named SIMPLICITY was born from the collaboration between Carlo Santambrogio and the designer Ennio Arosio with the aim of giving “transparent” shape to a precise and essential way of conceiving and living the spaces. The elements, even if strongly distinctive, do not overpower the atmosphere that surrounds them entering in perfect sybiosis with it. SIMPLICITY is realized in extraclear glass by Saint Gobain, tempered and stratified, named Diamant for its characteristics of extreme purity and brilliancy. It is interpreted in a unique way with the use of important thicknesses (30 mm) and treated with special technical procedures to guarantee total security. The essential characteristic is the “unicity” of the single elements which permit to realize standard pieces as well as complex projects. Our creations can vary in shape, dimension and finishing every time, allowing a high level of personalization. The use of glass sheets in a structural way excludes the need of profiles or other supporting elements. This way we eliminate all what may distract the eye from a contemplation of pure shapes and extreme elegance, born to surprise and to spread aesthetical pleasure.

Pieke BergmansPieke Bergmans is a young product designer from the Netherlands. She has studied at the Academy of Arts, St. Joost Breda (graphic design). HKA-Art-School Arnhem (3D-Design). Design Academy Eindhoven (Industrial Design). Royal College of Art, London (MA, Design Products). She works on a large variety of projects around the globe. Her favourite modus operandi is to alter existing production processes to come to new forms and functions. Pieke’s work is spontaneous, playful and fresh. She aims to combine function, form and message in a single elegant gesture. Whether working with porcelain, plastic or glass, she always creates objects that are of a pure and natural beauty. Diversity is one of her significant trademarks. She finds inspiration and opportunity in each industry and in every different material. In cooperation with factories, Pieke explores the possibilities of their production facilities, and manipulates them. The goal is to make ‘personalized mass production’ where irregularities are ruled in. “No two people are the same, and neither are two of the hairs that grow on your head. I wish our products were a bit more like this as well. The next step in mass production could be controlled imperfect production, for interesting, personal objects.” Pieke Bergmans works with a wide range of materials and has no preference for the use of them. “I explore materials and I’m curious about what they can do. From that angle, a product comes to life. I take peeks in foreign kitchens and let myself be inspired by what I see and experience. I also take the time to research and experiment. My designs depend on what I find along the way. I have an unstoppable curiosity for new ways to find and create form.
