Why aren’t these very musical?

Please keep in mind that these are random rhythm drills. They are not designed to help students systematically learn and internalize eighth notes. Unlike the Rhythm Menagerie, Rhythm Manipulations, and Rhythm Cup Explorations books, they are not designed to be terribly fun! Random rhythms are great to use periodically to test students readiness for an example, but they are not useful in helping students internalize rhythm and become better musicians.

Why did you use different fonts? That’s a fair question. While all of our resources for sale are carefully edited to ensure that they are professional looking and of the highest pedagogical value, these worksheets were created in different years to make sure they correspond to the Music Progressions curriculum that is updated at different times. We hope they are still useful to you even with the different formats! ;)

What is this Music Progressions Curriculum? Music Progressions is a Kansas Music Teachers Association suggested curriculum of independent music study. This curriculum is coupled with an annual evaluation sponsored by KMTA local associations and/or groups of KMTA teachers. You can access their curriculum guide on the KMTA website: http://www.ksmta.org/musicprogressions.php But of course you can use these rhythms for any curriculum.

Can I make copies of these rhythm pages? Yes, you may print or make copies of these rhythm pages for your individual students only. Please send other interested teachers to the ComposeCreate.com site so that they can download their own packet.

Where can I get better resources for actually training my students (not just

testing them)? Do you have any tips on counting? You might be interested in reading this blog article where I talk about why I’ve recently switched my counting methods. I think you have to be very observant to see what is working and what is not working for your student, but we also have to admit that counting is pretty difficult for almost anyone! Doing two things at once that involve two different parts of the brain is challenging. The

best way to help your students is to give them resources that help them internalize rhythm. So, while you are helping your students prepare for tests with these worksheets, consider a more solid pedagogical resource that helps them internalize rhythm in a systematic way (the Rhythm Menagerie series).

While standing, beat your chest like a gorilla to this rhythm. Either count out loud or use gorilla sounds as you beat the rhythm.

Hmmm….I don ’ t know if I can beat my chest. I ’ m still sucking my thumb.

Baby gorillas ride on their mother’s backs when travelling long distances. Adult male gorillas actually beat their chest with cupped hands rather than closed fists.
