Cognitive, non-routine work is gaining in

We live in a knowledge economy
“The most important, and indeed the truly unique,
contribution of management in the 20th century was
the fifty-fold increase in the productivity of the
manual worker in manufacturing.
The most important contribution management
needs to make in the 21st century is, similarly, to
increase the productivity of knowledge work and the
knowledge worker.”
Peter Drucker (1982)

Knowledge work requires a new workplace design
…leads to blurring boundaries
between work and private life.
…is mentally highly demanding
and bears project character.
…does not depend on time and
location and is highly individual.
Support of work-life integration
Enabling focus and prevention
of burnouts
Utmost flexibility in terms of
time and location, application
and device

Analysis of the gaps between desire and reality
• In order to illustrate the gaps between desire and reality, we compared the average
scores for
• Desire: perceived potential of modern ‘workplace anywhere’ infrastructures with
respect to the importance of technical, personal and business requirements
• Reality: fulfillment of the criteria in the current working environment
• As an indicator of the size of the gaps we measured the average differences between the
respective scores.

Key results of the gap analysis
• Lack of perception in particular by IT managers with respect to the perceived fulfillment of technical requirements in comparison to the rated performance.
Managers vs. knowledge workers
• Classic office workers show much stronger dissatisfaction with respect to the fulfillment of technical requirements than mobile or home office workers.
• It may be the infrastructure that makes them desk-bound office workers.
Classic office workers vs. mobile workers
• The perceived gaps generally increase with the size of the company – with two exceptions: security and support.
Company size
Classic office workers in large companies are particularly dissatisfied.

Your questions are welcome!
1) The design of workplace
environments demands a
broad(er) scale.
2) The end users’ focus is of
central importance –
this requires the involvement
of end users.
3) Classic non-mobile workers
need to get more attention.
Consider regional specificities!
