Temptations Review to Perform at CMHS Benefi t on Sept. 26
Annual Benefi t for Historic Ventura Pier is Set for Oct. 3
Tickets are now on sale for the 16th annual Pier Under the Stars benefi t happening on Saturday Oct. 3 and benefi tting the historic Ventura Pier. Th e event takes place at the Ventura Promenade from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitors who attend this wonderful culinary fair get to sample some of the best food and spirits provided by over 50 area businesses.
Restaurants, cafes, wineries and breweries serve their signature dishes and beverages from tented booths, while guests will enjoy music by Luna Gitana, dancing and bid on silent auction items – old to keep the pier, built back in 1878, in great shape.
Th e Harrison brothers Ralph, Jim and Myron spend many a childhood days at the pier and are enthusiastic sponsors of this event. Tickets are $75 and include food and beverage tasting, a commemorative Pier wine glass and complementary parking. VIP tickets are $125 each and include all of the benefi ts associated with general admission, plus early entrance to the event at 4:30 p.m. and a reserved seat at a VIP table along the promenade.

Th e concert begins at 7 p.m. and is being co-sponsored by the Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation and Ojai Valley Community Hospital Foundation. Th e show promises to present a high-energy performance of classic hits, including, “Ball of Confusion,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” and “My Girl.”

Carpinteria Chamber Board Tours Gold Coast Recycling
Camarillo Chili Cook-Off Spices Up Labor Day Weekend
I was thrilled to take fellow members of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors on a tour of the Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station on Sept. 7. Th ere was lots of interest in how we sort trash and recyclable materials as we march toward “Zero Waste.” Board members asked many, many questions.
We also enjoyed a great sack lunch. What was so wonderful about the tour was that board members represented a wide variety of businesses: banks, hotels, restaurants, farming, retail stores and nonprofi ts - you name it.
I’m serving my second term on the board. I t is exciting to be a part of this dynamic chamber that is involved in all aspects of this beautiful beach community and that also takes recycling seriously with a 74 percent diversion rate – one of the tops in the state!
A warm Labor Day weekend got a lot hotter – and much spicier – in Camarillo on Sept. 6 when the city held its seventh annual Chili Cook-Off and Music Festival. Over 2,000 locals and visitors attended this fun-fi lled community event at Camarillo Ranch.
Th e festival off ered much more than just delicious chili from a number of vendors. Th e Pleasant Valley Lions Club held a barbecue with plenty of beer, wine and soft drinks. Guests also enjoyed a classic car display and Texas Hold ’Em Poker Tournament in the Camarillo Ranch barn as well as a special fun and games zone for the kids. And, of course, there was great music featuring Heartache Tonight, which performed a variety of Elvis Presley tunes, and the popular local country band Caught Red Handed.

Th e 29th annual California Avocado Festival – one of the largest free festivals in Cailfornia – is coming to Carpinteria Oct. 1-4. Harrison Industries is a Gold Sponsor of this magnifi cent community event held on Linden Avenue that attracts over 100,000 visitors from near and far. We achieved “Zero Waste” last year, so let’s do it again! Do your part by placing your food waste and recyclables in the right barrels. It’s the right thing to do.
All of the money raised is returned to non-profi t groups so it really is a multi-community event. Come and have fun and help our local non-profi ts!
Camarillo Mayor Reports City is Moving Ahead and Thriving
Camarillo Mayor Bill Little gave the annual “State of the City” address on Sept. 10 and discussed a variety of topics, from city fi nances and public works projects to the new Rancho Campana High School and, of course, another subject on everyone’s mind – the drought!
Harrison Industries is a sponsor of the annual State of the City Address put on by the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce. President Ralph Harrison, Vice President Myron Harrison and George Harrison, general manager of Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station, attended the event held at Spanish Hills Country Club.
Overall, the city’s outlook is rosy, Little said, with a balanced budget and reserves in place. Residential and commercial projects are in the works, he said, but allaying concerns of some citizens, growth is controlled so Camarillo isn’t becoming another San Fernando Valley.

‘Carp-A-Cabana’ Benefi ts Carpinteria’s Schools
Since it was established in 1993, the Carpinteria Education Foundation has raised more than $2.3 million for Carpinteria Unifi ed School District school s. One of its major fundraisers is the lively “Carp-A-Cabana.”
Th e 23rd annual “Carp-A-Cabana” was held Sept. 13 at Lions Park on Casitas Pass Road. It featured live and silent auctions; beer, wine and tasty Mojitos; a wine raffl e; delicious hors d’oeuvres served by students in Carpinteria High School’s Culinary Arts program; and music by the Dusty Jugz, a popular local country and western band. Western wear was the sartorial choice of many who attended.
