2012 Annual Report to the Community

Working to save lives and reduce suffering through improved treatment, early detection,

and prevention of ovarian cancer.

I have always believed that we will find the answers for improved treatment, early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer through research. In fact it is the only way we will find a cure. I am pleased to say that 2012 was laser-focused on research.

Since its founding in 1996, the Rivkin Center has reached beyond institutional boundaries to create dynamic research connections and worked collaboratively with scientists and physicians at the forefront of important discoveries in ovarian cancer treatment and diagnosis. In 2012, we awarded 10 Pilot Study Awards of $75,000 each to scientists pursuing innovative avenues of ovarian cancer research. Additionally, we awarded three Scholar Awards of $60,000 to new investigators in the field.

In 2012, we also held our 9th Biennial Ovarian Cancer Research Symposium, This event allows ovarian cancer scientists the opportunity to come together and address the most important issues in ovarian cancer research. Many of the most respected researchers and clinicians were in attendance. As is fitting to our mission of nurturing scientists new to the ovarian cancer research field, we also provide a venue for young and upcoming scientists and physicians to present their findings. Our symposium is the longest running scientific meeting focused solely on ovarian cancer research in the U.S., around 300 scientists and clinicians attended the event.

Funding from donors ensures that the Rivkin Center can continue to convene this important group of scientists and clinicians. In fact many donors had the opportunity to attend a pre-symposium reception featuring a number of leading researchers and Rivkin Center awardees. As one of our presenters stated, “There are no text books for treating ovarian cancer; we have to write the textbooks.” I am so excited that with your support, the Rivkin Center is taking a leading role in this vital endeavor.

I am so grateful to you for your support. No one institution is capable of discovering a cure for ovarian cancer on its own and I appreciate that you give us the ability to bring so many great minds together. Together we will cure this devastating disease.

You made a significant difference in our ability to invest in research and in the health of women at high risk of ovarian cancer. And for your support we are truly thankful.

In 2012 we were moved and gratified by the incredible support from our donors, volunteers, board members. Overall we raised a total of $2.1 million.

The Year in Review

SummeRun:

More than 3,000 runners and walkers crossed the finish line for the 18th Annual SummeRun & Walk for Ovarian Cancer. When it was all over and every donation was in we had raised over $600,000! Our loyal, major supporter, the Wanda Jankelson Foundation issued a challenge to us that they would match any and all additional gifts received for the SummeRun through the end of 2012 – up to $100,000! And our wonderful teams, captains and participants rose to the challenge and exceeded the goal!

Special thanks go to Joan Elvin, our honoree, who worked hard behind the scenes helping to encourage and inspire others to participate and who was present at every event sharing her powerful story. I was also moved by the generosity of our presenting sponsor BDA who has been with us more than 12 years! And I am in awe of our inspirational team captains and their teams especially our biggest team, Team Leslie, and our top fundraising team, Carol’s Cause.

Family & Friends Auction:

This year we rolled out a new name for the annual auction: the Rivkin Center Family & Friends Auction. This event is the union of two events started in 2002: The Fisher Family Golf Invitational and the Courage 4 Life Golf Tournament. Evolving into a major evening auction, this event has become the Northwest’s largest fundraiser for ovarian cancer research.

Message from the Executive Director

In 2011 we were grateful to our amazing chairs, Dr. Katie Van Kessel and Mr. Derek Loeser. They led a committee of volunteers who helped make it the biggest event ever! This festive evening was also an opportunity to celebrate our annual Courage for Life Awardee and the inaugural Babs Fisher Valor Award.

I am inspired by and grateful for our partners at Swedish Medical Center and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and our wonderful Medical Director, Mary L. (Nora) Disis, M.D. from the University of Washington. I echo Dr. Rivkin’s appreciation of your support which enables us to return 75 percent of all we raise to research, programs and screening.

In an effort to continue to grow the reach and accessibility of ovarian cancer early detection services, as well as to further research efforts to develop new tools for screening, the Wanda Jankelson Ovarian Cancer Screening Clinic opened its doors in June 2012 within the new True Family Women’s Cancer Center at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. This new clinic provides annual screening of women throughout the Northwest identified at “high risk” for ovarian cancer. Additionally, participants enrolled participate in vital research studies to evaluate new blood markers and imaging technologies to help further the field of early detection research.

The new clinic is named in honor of the Wanda Jankelson Foundation for Health Care and Research and in gratitude for their over $1 million in leadership support of the Rivkin Center’s early detection and research grants program. Strategically located at the Swedish Cancer Institute’s True Center, the Wanda Jankelson Clinic will complement the comprehensive services and resources provided for women in one of the largest diagnostic and treatment facilities in the region, and help to establish a unique national model for ovarian cancer screening and prevention in a clinical setting.
