Missions and Stewardship

News from West Africa

On January 18, Rev. Gary Schulte, West Africa Area Director for the LCMS Office of International Mission, joined the Kansas District’s West Africa Committee on by phone to provide an update on developments in the region. He reported that “Phase 2” work, which involves training indigenous pastors for young churches in West Africa, is going well. The Lutheran Center for Theological Education (CLET) in Togo has been producing shepherds since 2000; the school now serves 8 countries. Of special interest to the Kansas District: Local pastoral education has been successfully launched in Guinea. In the first year, they’re training 10 students in Guinea on a budget of only $13,000.

Rev. Schulte identified several significant challenges, as well, including the threat of Muslim violence. He noted that it’s getting increasingly dangerous to work in Burkina Faso, where they’ve been headquartered, and they’re concerned that the spreading violence might touch the CLET at some point. “It would be easy for a guy with a gun on a moto to do some real damage on a class day,” said Schulte. Other challenges include recruiting struggles and the strong influence of the theology of glory.

Later in the conversation, the committee heard from nurse Steph Schulte, who discussed Mercy Medical Teams (she’s overseen four) as well her efforts to affirm women in the local congregations.

Rev. Schulte shared several prayer requests. He asked that we all pray for the “baby churches,” especially where they’re facing persecution; for Joseph, a church planter; for James, who was brought to Christ in a refugee camp and is now suffering on account of his faith; and for newly engaged professors, that they would raise up “good, solid Lutheran leaders.”

For an inspiring story about recent baptisms in West Africa, visit Reporter online (Feb. 5, 2019). On a related note: Our Pentecost Offering is coming soon!

This year’s Pentecost Offering on June 9 will once again raise support for mission work in West Africa. Pastors, we’ll be sending you an electronic survey soon with a single question: Would you like us to send you pre-printed bulletin inserts, as we’ve done in the past, or would you prefer to print your own? (When we asked that question at last fall’s Pastor’s Conference, the split was 50-50!) Watch for the survey in March.

Ash Wednesday Offering Materials Available

Keep an eye out for these faces! Teacher Calah Stichler (Hope, Shawnee) and Rev. Timothy Roth (St. Peter’s, Humboldt) are featured on this year’s bulletin insert for the annual Kansas District Ash Wednesday Offering. The offering supports future and active LCMS church workers, like Mrs. Stichler and Pr. Roth, through scholarships and education loan repayment grants. Last year, congregations raised over $20,000 for the cause through the Ash Wednesday Offering.

Promotional materials (bulletin insert and editable announcements) were sent to pastors earlier this week, but you can also find them in the “Quick Links” section of our homepage at kslcms.org. Thank you for your support!

Teaching the Faith: Presentation #2 Now Available

The Kansas District Adult Education Committee is pleased to announce the release of the next video presentation on teaching the faith in the home. Rev. Dan Galchutt, Assistant to the President for Missions and Stewardship in the Kansas District, and Rev. Philip Hoppe, Pastor of Peace Lutheran, Finlayson, MN, and St. Paul’s Lutheran, Bruno, MN, are co-founders of Living Planted. Now available on the Kansas District YouTube channel is their three-part presentation at the Kansas District Educators Conference in October 2018, “Teaching the Faith at Home: Why, How, and To What End?” Each session of their presentation consists of four main points. Under “Why?” Galchutt and Hoppe note, “We are trusting the wrong people and organizations to train up our children,” because Scripture places the prime responsibility on parents for training up children. Under “How?” they tell us that we need to establish a culture at

Rev. Dan Galchutt Rev. Philip Hoppe

The first annual Kansas District Life Conference was held January 12, 2019, in Topeka. Presenters included (from left, clockwise) Rev. Ben and Tamara Ockree, Rev. Michael Brockman, and Rev. Matthew Durance, Kansas District Life Coordinator.

IN RELATED NEWS … Synod President Rev. Dr. Matthew Harrison issued a statement in response to recent state actions extending abortion rights. You can read the statement HERE.

home centered around teaching the faith. “This culture is formed in the home through reading, praying, memorizing and singing the Word together.” In “To What End,” Galchutt and Hoppe explain why this emphasis is so important. Our congregations and families mourn the fact that adult children often drift away from the church and therefore from Christ. Do we really trust that God’s Word will create and sustain faith? “The blessings of being in the Word together affect everyone and everything in the household,” producing the fruitful Christian life for now and forever. Rev. Galchutt and Pr. Hoppe have also provided a free resource that includes specifics about how to teach the faith at home and establish the home culture. “A Simple Approach to Daily Devotions” is available as a PDF on the Living Planted website (formatted to be printed on legal-size paper). WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE KANSAS DISTRICT After a recent 10” snowfall in their area, the King of Kings Chainsaw Team in Gardner recently had an opportunity to put their training into practice. Wet, heavy snow proved to be too much for some trees. Members of King of Kings knew the right people to call. The KOK team made quick work of cleaning up after the storm. Thank you, King of Kings, for your willing servant hearts!

“And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’”

Tech Tips: Protect Yourself from Phishing Heather Williams, Business Manager

Have you ever been on the receiving end of a “phishing” email? If you’ve received an email from someone you think you know, but they’re asking for something very unusual, then you’ve probably received such email! Phishing is a simple tactic used by scammers to get information from you. They typically send an email pretending to be someone you know, but from an unknown email address that they change with each message. In this email, they ask you to provide something unusual, like iTunes gift cards, Google Play credits, or special favors.

How can you distinguish a phishing email from a legitimate email? Look for tell-tale signs in the message. Do you know the sender? Are they asking for something they normally wouldn’t? Is the language, spelling and tone consistent with the sender? Is the email address truly theirs? Does the file contain strange attachments?

You don’t need to wait for a disaster to use your LERT training. Look for opportunities in your congregation and community to engage your servant’s heart and hands!

Page 11: WORKERS TOGETHER€¦ · o Carol Staudacher and family at the death of Pastor Ted Staudacher, former pastor at St. John’s, Topeka, on Dec. 20 o Calvary Lutheran Preschool Director

The best practice to avoid falling victim to phishing emails is to simply delete the message. If you respond to the email, you’re letting the sender know that they’ve reached a valid address and that you do, indeed, know the alleged sender. The scammer will store this information, mark you as someone vulnerable to attack, and get more sophisticated with their targeting next time. There are several other things you can do to avoid phishing and hacking attacks to your computer, phone, or tablet. First, install those updates, even though they annoyingly change your settings and seem to take an eternity. Failing to install updates allows hackers to take advantage of system vulnerabilities. Next, cover your web camera when not in use. It’s a simple step to prevent hackers from taking further advantage of you. Finally, password protect your computer and phone with unique credentials, and avoid using free Wi-Fi when possible. Most hackers and phishers do not use sophisticated technology. Instead, they use attacks on your judgment. They can only be stopped with common sense, diligence, and skepticism. As always, contact the Business Office if you have any questions on data security or any other business best practices.
