Damage to any part o your brain will cause a malunction somewhere in your body, either temporarily or permanently. A hard hat provides protection or your brain onthe job site. In addition to cushioning your head rom blows, hard hats can protect yourom electric shocks, chemical spills, or hot materials.

    HARd HATS

How to wear your hard hat

Proper adjustment is important. Te webbing and band should be adjusted so the hardhat is secure on your head and doesnt all o when you bend over.

Chin straps are available to increase protection. Chin straps will help the hard hatstay on in windy conditions or when working next to high-speed trac. Tink o thelimited protection a ootball player would have without a chin strap on his helmet.

Do not wear your hard hat on top o any other hats or hoods.Never remove the hard hats suspension.Periodically check your hard hat and its suspension or cracks, tears, or rayed

    material.

Most hard hats should be replaced every two years. When to wear your hard hat

You should always wear your hard hat when working in the ollowing situations:

In contractors hard hat zones. While operating heavy equipment.

Where there is danger o head injury rom alling or ying objects.

When there is danger o contact with a high-voltage electric source.

When your agency or Occupational Saety and Health Administration (OSHA)regulations require hard hats.

When working on or adjacent to the traveled portion o the roadway (as needed).

Where to store your hard hat

You cant tell just by looking, but leaving a hard hat in the sunlike the back windowo a vehicleis bad or your hat. Te suns ultraviolet rays can damage the hat and

make it weaker. Its best to store your hard hat out o direct sunlight.

    Training activities

    1. Show one or more videos and discuss. (1020 min.)

    2. Set up a bad liting and carrying scenario by scattering debris on the oor.Put a closed, lightweight box in the middle. Demonstrate bad liting and carrying

techniques such as bending over and liting with your back, not inspecting the boxand cutting yoursel on a sharp edge, tripping over something in your path, twistingat the waist to set the item down, or throwing/dropping the box. Ask the learners toidentiy what you did wrong. (4 min.)

    3. Spread the other items that need to be lited and carried around the training area.Ask learners to inspect each item or things to watch out or (sharp corners, slipperytexture, heavy load, etc.). Once theyve concluded their inspection, ask them to tossout their ideas or each item, one by one. Discuss the potential hazards o each anddemonstrate how to inspect each item. (4 min.)

    4. Using light items, ask each learner to practice proper liting and carrying techniques.

    (57 min.)

    5. Move to an item that requires a handcart, crane, or partner and demonstrate how tolit with each o these. Allow learners to practice until youre sure everyone can use ahandcart or crane and lit with a partner properly. (810 min.)

    LIFTING & CARRYING

Using proper liting and carrying techniques can prevent common workplace injuries, especially to your back. I you think an object is too heavy to lit without injuringyoursel, you can always lit with a partner or use a crane, hoist, dolly, or other liting ormoving equipment.

    How to lift

Before you liftWarm up with stretching exercises. Inspect the object or slivers and jagged or sharp edges.

Wipe o greasy, wet, slippery, or dirty objects.

Make sure the work area is ree o debris to avoid tripping. Rock the load to estimate its weight. Dont lit objects that weigh over hal your body

    weight.

When you liftPosition your eet correctly. Place your eet about shoulder-width apart, with one oot

in the direction o movement and the other in a position where it can give thrust toyour body.

Keep the object as close to your body as possible.

For a compact object, squat down and straddle the object with your knees. Keepingyour back relatively straight, pull the object in toward your torso and use your legs tohelp lit. Your legs are our times as strong as your back.

Grasp the object correctly. Keep your fngers away rom pinch and shear points.Grasp boxes at opposing top and bottom corners.

    How to carry

Move as smoothly as possible. Never turn at the waist to change direction or to put the object down.

Set the object down close to your body or place it on the near edge o a shel or truckbed.

Never throw or drop large or heavy objects. Use a suitable lowering device inecessary.Team lifting

Make sure the load is level. Lit, walk, and set down the load in unison.

Call out commands o lit and set down.

When carrying long sections o pipe, place them on shoulders and use shoulder pads.
