Workbook 2Task 1
Task 1
Describe the specific safety precautions to be taken when working with computer systems (to include such things as safety guidance relating to the use of visual display unit (VDU) equipment and work station environment such as lighting, seating, positioning of equipment; repetitive strain injury (RSI); the dangers of trailing leads and cables; how to spot faulty or dangerous electrical leads, plugs and connections).
Task 1
What safety precautions should be taken when working with computer systems?
• Lighting– The brightness of the screen should be set around the same as the
ambient lighting in the room• Seating
– Seats should be adjustable so that thighs and forearms are horizontal at desk height. The top of the screen should be at eye level. Feet should be flat on the floor or have adequate support.
• Positioning of Equipment– Keyboard should be close enough that elbows are at 90°. Screen
should be at arms length from your face. Wrist supports should be provided to avoid RSI.
Task 1
What safety precautions should be taken when working with computer systems?
• RSI (repetitive strain injury)– Caused by bad posture and not taking sufficient breaks
• Trailing leads or cables– Can cause trip hazards and result in equipment from
being disconnected or damaged• Dangerous connections– Can result in fires, electric shock, or damage to
equipment
Task 1
• How to spot faulty or dangerous electrical leads, plugs and connections.
• Visual inspection of leads• Damaged leads can lead to ???? or ????• Ensure that all plugs are properly connected.• Check that equipment has been PAT (Portable
Appliance Tested) inspected.
