“A Night Out” A sexual Health risk taking Board

Game

• A sexual health project working with N.E.E.T young men from a deprived area.

• Working in partnership with Young People services , Brook and Connexions.

• Flexible and open minded work ethic.• Working towards the needs of the young people.• Looked at young peoples views around sex and risk taking

behaviours.• Looked at existing sexual health risk taking educational resources.• Young people decided to design a board game for young people.• The young people remained actively involved during all stages of

the design process.

Barriers Preventing Young People from “Getting Involved”

• Territorial • Don’t know that service exists• Feel threatened by repercussions of accessing a service• Stigma- Different ways of addressing issues• Not important or high on their agenda• Fear of sensitive information being passed on- confidentiality• Lack of motivation• No trust in services or systems• Peer pressure• Service opening times not geared to young peoples needs

Other Factors Acting As Barriers

• The importance of adopting an approach that is culturally appropriate and sensitive to the needs of the target group

– BME Groups– LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender)– Travellers– Homeless– Institutionalised

• Understanding the topic of sex can be taboo in certain groups• Looking at different ways of addressing issues• Adopt a “relationship” approach - look at the value and belief

system of the young person

Barriers Effecting Facilitators

• No quick fix• Unrealistic targets, rigid outputs and time frames• Lack of opportunities for long term engagement• Hardest group to engage with• No flexibility in working practices• Lack of resources• High drop-out numbers can affect continuity of project • Lack of flexibility on the part of the facilitator• No knowledge of the setup of the area• No real commitment from funders and no sustainability

Overcoming Barriers & Methods of Engaging

• Building positive relationships by having longer term commitment• Sufficient project funding for longevity• Young people have ownership of project from the onset – Contract• Project has to focus on and reflect the needs of the group• Has to be a tangible end product• Importance of including creative, fun and imaginative incentives• Mutual respect• Comfortable environment to run project from• Flexibility• Training on the issues • Understanding the setup of the area and knowledge of young

peoples needs and constraints

Role Play

“A Night Out”• The Rules

• This game is played with a facilitator who should read the booklet provided for guidance when asking Questions and asking Action and Reaction cards.

• The game is played with 4-6 players• Players have to spin the counter to move• You can only move forward 4 spaces maximum• If you land on a” lift” the hand shows you where to move to• If you land on a STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) you follow the arrows

down to the square it leads you to• If you land on a Question Square the facilitator picks up a question card

and you have to answer it. If you get the answer right then you can spin again. If you get the answer wrong then you do not move until your next go.

• If you land on an Action and Reaction square the facilitator picks up the card and you have to answer the question. Depending on the answer you face a different consequence.

• If you land on the G.P square you miss a go• If you land on a G.U.M (Genito Urinary Medicine) square then you miss 2

go’s• If you are sent to Greenbank Police Station then you miss 3 go’s• The option of the game is to get to the Finish square first.
