PERFORMANCE SPACE TYPOLOGIES conpares the Opera vs Circus because they are on opposite ends of the typology spectrum. Cirque Du Soliel non-travelling shows are a kind of hybrid of the two.The OperaIn the plan of Paris Opera House, the figure-ground of performance space to back of house, amenities, and procession is a really small proportion.The CircusThis Barnum & Bailey Big Top plan has the opposite affect with almost all of the plan devoted to performance space.The ambition was to figure out a way to use a moving element to fluidly transition between these typlogies.

The first move was a typology shift as well as a formal idea. Called the TRI FLY. So, here we take the traditional theater setup with flytower side and back stages and perform a series of operations. The first of which deletes the side stages and splits the flytower and backs stage into two.The second operation cants the flytowers and lifts the backstage chunks up in the air. The last operation cants the substage to create a third diagonal fly that comes from below the ground.

This gives the performance hall the advantage of three separate multi-use backstage areas with direct diagonal access to the hall.

The Omni Hotel is a redesign that sits adjacent to California Plaza, MOCA, Grand and Olive streets. The massing idea is to raze the ex-isting lobby and create a connec-tion between Grand (the cultural thoroughfare) and Olive (connec-tion to the rest of DT), as well as adding 4 floors of rooms to the top for more views of the city.

The hotel idea is to inject 4 Califor-nia landscapes into the hotel which all create new types of rooms that all have a new relationship to the city and hotel ameneties.

STRIATE THE BLOCK

The investigation takes place in Long Island City in a site

harboring multiple highline train systems along with stor-

age for the adjacent Sunnyside Railyards. With Manhattan

maxed out and Brooklyn growing rapidly, LIC is experienc-

ing influx of new development. With art and creative culture

in its roots a school of design and new 7 line train stop

connected by an urban park will help establish new sys-

tems for development that maintain and enhance cultural

identity.

Architectural exploration includes development of systems

regarding variations in patterning, porosity, paneling, and

texturing within structure and landscape.

The new Opera House sits along a newly developed coastline and public park integrating existing and natural landscape with a new sphere of public space and iconography. The Opera House and Music Halls are embedded into the building like pearls of a clam; It is made up of layers. These layers echo the complex-ity of the site and its own make up (the people, the new city, the natural land-scape, the beauty of the views).

At 1,500 rooms, this hotel will be the largest hotel in Beijing. It is located near the Beijing International Airport in the 5th Ring, and will be used to host international conferences. The building is 303 meters long and is intended to become a major landmark, visible to landing aircraft.

The building is organized around three volumetric rings fused together by surfaces draped from the top and bottom. The rings create atriums which are enclosed by ETFE domes, housing a 10,000 m2 interior rainforest as well as the conference center and hotel amenities. Rooms, radiating out along each ring, are oriented both outwards and inwards, creating views out to the city as well as down into the rainforest. The droop of the rings towards the perimeter of the building also allows views outward from the interiors of the rings. Structural bays are flexible and can be broken down into standard, business suite, and presidential types. A sky restaurant is located at the high-est level of the building, with views out to the city in all directions.

The skin is also em-bedded with a second system of solar thermal pipes and grey water capture grooves which hybridizes the base diamond pattern with a sporadic weaving pattern.

The site for the Chinese National Games Arena is located in a Shen-yang University courtyard lined on three sides by University buildings and on one side by major arterial street which features the new 300kmh Shenyang High-Speed Rail line. The design is a simple volume which becomes increas-ingly articulated and transparent towards public spaces and its main entry.

Fiber Composite Sculpture and landscaping_ This public art in-stallation, located in front of the Anaheim Transit Terminal, is the result of intersecting the realms of structural engineering, compu-tation, and painting.

A loopy mass is analysed as a composite shell structure, reveal-ing areas of low and high stress. The resultant color-gradient map is transferred to a digital paint environment where it is manipu-lated to produce specific visual effects-- such as loopiness and spottiness-- but also broken down into layers of variable thickness and material strength. Areas of very low stress become transpar-ent infill, creating deep views inside the inside of the manifold. In the end, color and pattern only partially index material forces; the piece exceeds simple material expression towards something which correlates nature and culture.

Layers of super-thin technology are embedded into the structural-ly sedimented fiber composite shell. Thin film solar tape is tucked beneath the outermost layer of the shell, while organic-LED light-ing film is embedded on the inside, in light colored layers. The solar tape creates micro-patterning which breaks down large sur-faces and generates energy to power the lighting of the piece. At night, the lighting creates mysterious graphic and silhouette effects, heightening the dimensional play of the piece.

Concept cars in the history of the automotive industry, though often produced for brand mar-keting purposes, constitute an avant-guarde. The evolutionary development of that industry has always depended on the deterrito-rialization of domesticated forms of transportation through the introduction of mutations into the system. There are several biases in concept car design, of course, ranging from those which focus on advanced material applica-tions, drive-train, fuel, safety, and other performance dimensions, such as in Formula One, to those which focus on contemporary body styling on a relatively indif-ferent, if not conventional chassis.

These biases are also evident in contemporary architecture, in the current split between discours-es of synthetic materiality and effects vs. approaches based on the behavior of physical matter. In car design, however, this split has not become so academically entrenched, and the vast majority of successful concept car designs leverage crossovers between formal features and material be-haviors. It is this kind of synthetic thinking which drives our design for the Semi-Rigid Car (SRC).

[001 HRR] Concept

[001.HRR] is a revolutionary concept motorcycle using the cutting edge of material science and technology. A hybrid in some parts, this race replica uses not only thin film solar and paint to harness solar energy but also uses a kinetic energy recovery system [KERS] as a secondary source of power.

Our goal was to rethink not only linear manufactur-ing processes but also evolve a riders experience and safety through the use of technology and materials. The concept from a mechanical/racer perspective was consulted by Bob Miller (Desmo-Valves Racing) & Luis Quinones (Ducati 848evo WERA Racer). The idea was to maintain a fairly normalized engine package and transmission while innovating in the areas of systems, technology, material research, and manufacturing processes.

Embedded within the front cowl is a network of custom sensors + “circuit” boards which provide feedback to the helmet HUD [VISON]. The lower front cowl houses the “Cerebro”, a series of high precision optic lenses and sensors which process iwnformation for the rider [VISON]. [VISON] allowed us to create a safer motorcycle experience, not only on the street but also on the track. Traditionally “safer” motorcycle concepts involve enclosing the rider inside a shell or protective layer, this is contrary to the spirit of motorcycle riding and racing. Instead [VISON] provides safety in information which is normally not provided as well as eliminating the need to look down at you dash, causing further distractions. This system is powered by a series of “painted” thin film solar sheets embedded in the upper front cowl. These systems along with the emerging circuit board network not only provides power to the sensors but also adds a tectonic quality uncommonly seem in motorcycle fairings.

1. During the day, stick the closed lamp to any window. Thin film solar sheets embedded in the silicone suction cups will charge an array of microbatteries. Boost converters allow voltage to be stepped up, or amplified, to power the OLED lighting elements.

2. At night, simply remove the fixture from the window and reattach it to any sur-face: a desk, the back of your computer, the wall.

3. Press anywhere on the OLED array and the armature unfurls while the light turns on. An armature actuated by spring loaded and gas struts unfurls, while the boost converters are switched on and activate the light itself. An embedded photometric light sensor monitors the ambient light conditions, and adjusts the light output accordingly to preserve battery life, and provide the most balanced and pleasing light quality.

RE-LUXO is a revolutionary lighting concept using state of the art materials and technology. Zero ‘from the grid’ elec-tricity is required to power this ultra compact desk light.

Its usage is simple:

Juno has an extremely high reclectivity rate which makes it highly visible from earth, but the material excavated by the collision that produced the crater "bite" has low reflectance. Juno is the second largest S-type asteroid and is estimated to contain 1% of the total mass of the asteroid belt.
