MoD success for Small Works TeamThe Small Works Team have successfully completed another refurbishment project for the MoD and PriDE. The refurbishment of the three accommodation blocks at The Royal School of Military Survey, Hermitage, Berkshire, was completed in October at a total contract value of £208k.

All areas were refurbished including bedrooms, bathrooms, corridors, kitchens and laundries.

Working in partially-occupied buildings necessitated keeping facilities such as kitchens and laundries operational as well as helping to decant army personnel and equipment into refurbished areas to enable further phases of work.

Lt Col Brian Sherrington stated, “I would like to express my thanks to Brymor. I was totally impressed with Brymor’s way of working and the

high standards met. I am exceedingly happy with the quality and progress of the project as a whole.”

He continued, “I am very grateful for Brymor’s excellent cooperation during the project”.

It is further testament to the team’s success that they remain on the site carrying out works to another accommodation block. This is one of the most recent projects for the team who have been working on similar projects on multiple MoD bases for the last ten years.

Great Work on Academic CentreAfter completing a short refurbishment programme for the University of Southampton School of Medicine, the Division of Clinical Neurosciences is extremely pleased with Brymor’s work on their new Academic Centre.

David Baldwin, Professor of Psychiatry and Head of Mental Health Group wrote;

“I am writing to express my very great thanks and appreciation for the major contribution that you and your team have made since we embarked on the relocation project many months ago. Without your help and support we could not have made the transition into the academic centre so smoothly or successfully.”


Teamwork Boosts Community SchemeAlton Buckle, Wootey Schools and Brymor Contractors gathered in October to celebrate the initial ground breaking of the new Community Building on the school’s site.

The building, funded by Hampshire Extended Services, will provide vital services for the local community and an accessible, affordable venue for the local community.

Alton Buckle is the local Children’s Partnership comprising organisations across education, health and the voluntary sector who work with and support local families and children.

In December 2010 Brymor staged an entertaining assembly with practical demonstrations from subcontractors. This event not only communicated

a clear safety message to the pupils, but was also a chance for the school to promote the new facilities, engaging with parents and the wider community.

Working within the occupied schools site, between the infant and junior school, open communication has been the key to the great relationship between the school and the construction team.

The £700k project, which also includes renewing windows and doors to the existing school, is managed by Hampshire County Council and due for completion in April 2011.

Aspire-ational Awards

Two Brymor site managers on Aspire Defence projects have received well deserved recognition for their work.

Firstly, Mark Beebe, Manager at Tidworth, received an Aspire Defence ‘Safety First Always Award’ due to his excellent management of a ‘resident bat situation’ on a refurbishment project.

More recently, Site Manager Keith White received a Considerate Constructors Award for ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’ at the recently completed New Family Centre at Warminster.

Data Centre Reaches CompletionSEC carried out the major M&E works on the site and acted as principle contractor and Brymor were subcontractors managing all aspects of the building fabric works including:-

• Architectural and structural design • Installation of a 4500m2 mezzanine level • Raised access flooring throughout • Isoclad data pods/rooms • All builders work and enabling for large plant • Installation of 240,000 litre backup fuel tanks

The £1.6m building works were carried out within an occupied building with personnel in adjoining offices and close neighbours. Some of the pods were in active use, storing data for some high profile customers, therefore cleanliness and continuity of power and cooling were of utmost importance.

This is the most recent project in a long running and very successful relationship between Brymor and SEC.

Brymor have recently completed design and construction works to convert an existing warehouse unit into a state-of-the-art data centre.


The Sustainable Business NetworkWe have recently joined the Sustainable Business Network which is the forward facing business support system run by Hampshire County Council’s Sustainable Business Partnership.

They currently run a series of networks across the Hampshire & Isle of Wight area, meaning that most businesses should have at least one which they can access easily. For businesses connected to the construction industry they also operate a parallel Sustainable Construction Network.

Local quarterly network meetings bring together engaged and like-minded businesses in an informal setting to consider a different sustainability issue each time. Past meeting themes have included

• Environmental Management Systems (EMS), • Transport, Energy• Marketing yourself as a Sustainable Business• Sustainable Procurement• Staff Engagement and many more

The common theme running through all of these is that businesses can gain significantly through the adoption of more sustainable business practices – reducing costs and increasing profitability whilst enhancing their brand image and reputation.

All for Charity Mate!Despite the economic downturn, Brymor staff are keeping up support for local charities.

Our main charity, The Rowans Hospice, last year launched their ‘Dorothy’s Dream Appeal’ to fund at-home care. The Brymor team have supported this through sending e-cards and donating postage money at Christmas, raffles, dress down days and general collections throughout the year as well as providing a ‘yellow brick road’ for their launch event.

Other charity activities include:-

• Waterside House – Donation of hoist and electronic rise & fall basin

• Sponsored Julian Curl (Priory Clinic) for a charity bike ride

• Donated a handrail at Brookfield School

• Aspire Golf Day - Sponsoring a hole for “Down Syndrome Education International”

• Naomi House Children’s Hospice – donation of shed and building materials for ‘Jack’s Place’

• Netley 4th Scout Group – donation towards scout hut refurbishment

• Southampton General Hospital Children’s ward – Christmas Scooter Run – Donation of toys

• Collections, dress down days and Wii F1 Challenge to raise money for one of our site managers who is unable to return to work following a sudden and traumatic illness

We have pledged our continued support for The Rowans Hospice in 2011 and would like to thank all who have donated or supported our various causes throughout the last year.

Office Administrator, Nicky Le Marquand and her husband Paul have recently returned from a trip to Everest Base Camp in Nepal.

Flying into Kathmandu and then flying to Lukla, the challenging hike then took 11 days, finishing at the southern base camp, a massive 5364m above sea level.

Adding to the drama, their trip back to Kathmandu was hampered by the weather and the group were forced to resort to helicopters to lift them from the high slopes back to safety.
