So… What is a conceptual model? and What is a conceptual framework?
10.1.2017
2
A conceptual model referred as conceptual frameworkAnd “identifies a set of variables and relationships
that should be examined in order to explainthe phenomena”
Kitson et al. 2008
Models are different from theories because they often provide a visual picture of
empirical findings and/or the experience ofpracticing professionals.
Scientific models might be based on morethan one theory or may represent a singletheory in its operationalized form.

From a public health perspective Work is as important to good health as are
education, diet, exercise, and otherdeterminants of health.
Within this framework, work disability is theoutcome of multiple upstream forces that, regardless of the cause of an injury ordisease, promote the development of workdisability

Is longer working life needed?
Eva Vingaard 2013
If yes…Then workplaces
matter!
Workplace Environment Is NotStatic Workplaces are dynamic and have a purpose
and priorities that may not easilyaccommodate work disability prevention
the dynamic nature of the work-place mayinterfere with the ability to focus on sicknessabsence and return to work processes.

All perspectives have to deal withprospects and consequences By now some workplace- based intervention
studies undertake economic analyses This is understandable, as the employer is an
important stakeholder, who in the case of sickworkers is primarily confronted with productivitylosses and costs to maintain the production.
However, as productivity costs might depend oneligibility criteria of social security benefits andallocation (Tompa et al. 2008).
Once reduced productivity at the level of the worker occurs, this can affect the productivity of a workplace and finally alsothe productivity of society

failed thus far to describe the mechanism bywhich contextual factors can affect thedisability and work participation processes

What to do How can companies establish an
organizational policy and practice thatsupports the social organization of RTWthroughout the RTW process?
Including the personnel policy relating to sickleave, as well as the social processes thatshape how the inclusion of sickness absenceemployees is tackled in practice at theworkplace.

3 approaches to work disabilityprevention at the wokplace
The ”hard way”(Jura, rules, guidelines)
The "soft”(HR-initiatives, attitudes,
policies, values)
The "technical"(Adm. Procedures, IT systems)
31
The concept of workplace disabilitymanagement (WPDM)From The Gensby review; Workplace disability management (WPDM) is an
employer based strategy to RTW (Shrey & Lacerte 1995)
An umbrella term covering:Theoretical concept (Habeck et al. 1991; Akabas et al. 2002)
Planned intervention (Franche et al. 2005)
Counseling practice (Habeck et al. 1994)
A WPDM program offers a systematic employer-basedintervention approach provided by a company widedepartement in close collaboration with key parties at theworkplace (Gensby et al. 2012)

Conclusions
No unambiguous conclusions on the effect ofWPDM programs promoting RTW could bereached, with few program evaluationsconducted
Identified continuous weakness in RTW policyand practice, focusing on initial RTW, withlimited attention to the period when back atwork

Can Work Disability Management modelssupport the effectiveness of work disability?
YesBut we still have al long way to go!
Workplace-basedWork Disability prevention models
And up until now no one singleexplanatory model has successfully capturedthe complexity of the disability factors withattention to the multisystem dynamics, whichinfluence individuals’ decision process forwork reintegration/retention.
