Can summer be here already? Somehow, no matter how much
has happened during the year, summer comes along and the busy-ness
of the JCC comes upon us. There are so many programs and projects,
Shabbat eve and morning services scheduled that one often wonders
where the time is to enjoy some ―R and R.‖
Although everyone is occupied and busy during the next few
months, summer is a wonderful opportunity to enrich your Jewish life.
As you plan your summer, leave room for some Jewish experiences.
There is much that you can learn and do Jewishly during July and Au-
gust.
Here are some summer activities for you participate in.
1. Celebrate Shabbat at home. Set aside Friday evening to eat a Shab-
bat meal with family and or friends. There is a joy and peacefulness that
fills the home as Shabbat is welcomed. Plan for an early Shabbat dinner
to leave time for…
2. Attend the synagogue as a family. Spending time as a family is very
important. Participating in Shabbat services deepens family ties and cre-
ates a warm environment that will enrich your family’s Jewish identity
and commitment. You need not come dressed in formal clothing. Here
at the JCC, casual is the dress code. And remember the two Shabbat
eve beach services, July 16th at Spray Beach and August 20th at Love-
ladies.
3. While sitting on the beach or on your deck, read a Jewish book. The
JCC library has something for everyone. Ask Judith Pripstein to recom-
mend some books.
4. Join the Adult Study program with me every
Thursday evening at 7 pm. We are studying the
Biblical Book of Ecclesiastes and doing a short dis-
cussion on ―What’s So Good About Being Jewish.‖
5. Do a Mitzvah this summer! Give of yourself and
your time to volunteer for some of the programs
and projects of the JCC. Offer to drive someone to
the synagogue if they have no transportation.
6. Have a healthy, safe and enjoyable summer.

JCC Nominating Committee Report
Page 2 VOLUME 3, IS SUE 4
As reported elsewhere, plans for the Rebuild Project are progressing into the
construction drawing stage. We plan to go out for contractor bids in about two months,
and if our campaign goals are reached and/or our financing plans are complete, we may
still break ground late this year.
Our fundraising campaign has made good progress but is still below our hopes
and needs. If it doesn’t greatly improve, we may have to delay the project for 1 or
more years and miss the opportunity to take advantage of lower construction costs now
available because of the economy. PLEASE make your initial pledge, donation, or in-
crease your previous pledge NOW. While all amounts of monies are important, I real-
ize that for many of our members a modest pledge is more generous and difficult than a
$10,000 pledge from others. We need pledges from all members and larger commit-
ments from many. Over a 3 year period, one dollar per day (less than a cup of coffee)
equals about $1100, and $1.40 per day equals $1500. If your pledge was less than
these amounts, please rethink and try to increase. Whether your pledge increases from
$100 to $1500, or from $10,000 to $15 or $20 thousand, make it something of which
you can be justifiably proud.
If cash and pledged amounts get close enough to our anticipated costs, the
Board of Trustees has explored other means of moving forward now in this favorable
building climate. While we shall not commit to a bank mortgage, the Board recom-
mends that we approach some members to participate in a mortgage backed loan to be
paid back over several years as more Campaign monies are raised. You may recall that
we used mortgage backed loans from some of our members to finance the condo con-
struction. We plan to do this again to take advantage of this favorable construction cli-
mate, to have our beautiful new building sooner, and extend the fundraising timeframe
as necessary.
At its June 15, 2010 meeting the Board of Trustees has approved this method of
financing for up to $500,000, and we will now be looking for some members to offer
loans of $50 or $100 thousand at 3½ % interest for a period of up to 5 years. As you
know, money market and bank interest is now paying 1% or less. If you are interested in
participating, please let me know. My phone number is (609) 492-3911.
Harold Farin has graciously agreed to be chairman of our Transition Committee,
and we are starting to investigate possibilities for running the congregation during the
year-long construction period. Arrangements must be made for such things as Religious
Services, Religious School, Space for Office Staff, Meetings, and lots and lots of storage.
We also hope to find a place to hold our Bazaars and Art Festival. If you have sugges-
tions for any of this, he would welcome your thoughts.
As we move into our summer season, we have a full calendar of activities
planned. Many of these events are listed elsewhere in this Bulletin or will be announced
in the weekly Shabbat Reminder and on the JCC Web-site. Please read these each week
to keep informed. I hope to see you at services or at some of our many activities over
the summer. As usual we can always use more volunteers to take the burden off those
who work so hard. We need help with these activities and with such things as mailings.
Call me or those involved and say you will do your share, or when called—say YES.
Shalom, Don Pripstein
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Our

Page 3 VOLUME 3, IS SUE 4
As announced in the last issue of the Bulletin, a list of pledges and donations
made to the Capital Campaign for the first 18 months of our appeal is being published
in this issue. Many thanks to the 124 members and friends who have responded to
the call for funds for this important project. You have helped bring our total monies
towards the new building close to $1 million.
We still have another $500,000 to raise in order to break ground in November
of 2010. It crucial to begin building at this time so as to take advantage of the favor-
able construction costs available. Please add your name to our ―Honor Roll‖ of do-
nors. We hope that each and every member will make a contribution, at whatever
level they are comfortable, and that at the end of this campaign, we can have 100%
participation in the rebuilding of the JCC of LBI.
When I returned to the island this Spring and drove up to the Center, I was
struck by how shabby our building and property had become. Yes, inside, it is a place
full of activity - in spite of the limited space and antiquated facilities. But what does
the outside of our building say about us? Our synagogue should reflect the pride we
have in being Jews and our commitment to being a part of this community. Help
make that happen by giving a pledge to the Capital Campaign you can be proud of.

the Future”

Here is the latest look at the concept for the east wall of the new sanctuary approved by the JCC Board at the June
meeting. 12 our existing stain glass windows will enhance the bimah, with the additional 2 windows, which are
larger in size, placed on the north wall (1) and south wall (1). Flanking the Star of David above the ark will be the
menorahs which are on either side of the present ark. Many thanks to Sherry Fruchterman, Office and Gallery De-
sign, for her input and hard work with this concept.

HONOR ROLL: A LISTING OF MEMBERS AND FRIENDS
WHO HAVE MADE PLEDGES AND GIFTS TO THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN APPEAL
From December 1, 2008 – June 15, 2010
*Tributes and events designated to the Building Fund are not listed here.
We now have a new program and new set-up for the weekly email
Shabbat Reminder. Please contact Rose Valentine
([email protected]) if you are not receiving it or are having
trouble opening it up. A special feature of this program allows
you to forward our email to a friend or someone you think would
like to learn more about the JCC. They can then request that
they be included on our list. Please let Rose know if you have any
news to share and let's keep in touch. A modified version of the

Five or so years when I started the Book Corner,
Borrow meant take out, enjoy, and return~ all on the
honor system. I am pleased to report that not only has the
system worked but many books have been anonymously
donated.
Now Browse has taken a whole additional meaning.
Over the winter I put the books into our computer, using a
spreadsheet format. Karen Schwing has kindly linked this
list to the JCC website. They are divided into the usual
categories and listed by title, author, date and in many
cases a few descriptive words. The designation CC means multiple copies and HC
indicates Holocaust.
So now you may browse at the JCC Book Corner in the building or at your
leisure from your desk at home.
Happy browsing and borrowing. Let me know if this works for you.
Happy Reading!!

Dear Members:
All members are to pick up their new Membership Directory at the JCC
starting Sunday, June 27th at the "Welcome Back Brunch." PLEASE only take the
booklet with your name label, as they are pre-assigned.
FYI, we are considering having this available on line, in a secured man-
ner, for the future.
I know how it feels to be at services and not remember your names.
Thus, name tags will be available at the door to help all of us. It's imperative that
at the conclusion of the service, they be returned to the container and they will
be filed for us.
I am still working with Marcie Deutsch on the ongoing living history inter-
views with many of our family-members. I know you will enjoy their memories
when the CD-ROM is complete and available next year in honor of our 50th an-
niversary.

Rebuild Capital Campaign
We have a total of 109 donors and $540,476 in pledges and donations giving a grand total of $898,476 including funds
from the sale of the condo and raffles. Total money on hand is $624,974, which includes $296,974 in donations received as
well as money from the sale of the condo and raffles.
A list of donors by donor category will be published in the July/August bulletin, pending approval of each donor to in-
clude their name. A letter will be sent out to the membership asking how those who have donated would like their name
listed or whether they would prefer to not have their name listed. A motion was passed to add donation categories in the lis t
of donors as follows: 1) < $500 and 2) $500 - $1499. These will be in addition to previously announced categories for larger
donations.
R. Valentine thanked board members for making calls to members who have not yet made a commitment. In response
to these calls, $23,480 was pledged from 12 donors.
Fundraising ideas to help us achieve our Capital Campaign goal were discussed. These included holding a raffle for a cruise,
trip, or property vacation use as well as a series of concerts. Also discussed was the possibility of selling a portion of the JCC
property. J.Shapiro will present a review of possibilities for discussion at the next Board meeting.
JCC Rebuild Committee
The JCC’s application for construction will be on the agenda of the Long Beach Township Land Use Board’s (LUB) April
14th meeting. The application includes 2 minor variances: 1) reduced front yard spacing off of 24
th St. and 2) 49 instead of 60
parking spaces. Occupancy will be at 300.
Approximately $4000 in township fees previously paid by the JCC will be refunded due to our non-profit status.
E. Dreyfus submitted a motion to get approval to file and pay fees and costs for the JCC application for site plan and buildi ng
plan approval with the LUB and to have approval for the necessary signatures on all documents in connection with this appli-
cation. This motion was approved unanimously.
Other Topics
J. Shapiro reported that income through March is ahead of last year; income from membership dues and religious school
are both up. We are cash negative, but less so than at this time last year. We expect to be cash positive later this year.
C. Nunberg reported that the High Holidays are right after Labor Day; letters need to go out in June. The Foundation has
been secured for the High Holidays. Attendance is expected to be high because the holidays are early and Yom Kippur is on
the weekend.
D. Pripstein reported that Father Steve, from St. Francis, has offered the JCC use of their church in Surf City during con-
struction of the JCC building at no charge. This generous offer is most appreciated.
Discussion took place regarding whether the JCC Membership Directory should be printed every other year in an effort to
save money. More information is needed to make a decision on this topic.
We’re ahead of last year in terms of signing up artists for the Art Festival on August 22.
Dates for the Sisterhood’s summer activities are set.
The Breakfast Club and Mahjongg continue to be well attended Winter Programs. 37 people attended an Opera and
Pasta event at the JCC on February 21. The event was co-sponsored by the JCC and the American Association of University
Women – Barnegat Light and raised $170 for the Sisterhood.
A certificate of appreciation to the JCC of LBI was received from Southern Regional High School in recognition of 11
years of support for their scholarship program.
The JCC will participate in Stafford Township’s Carnival of Information on Saturday, May 1. It was agreed that we will not
man a table, but will provide written materials for the event in an effort to raise awareness of the JCC of LBI.
Rabbi Jack is back on full duty following his knee surgery. He is leading Friday night services and did a great job at the
Seder and Interfaith Service. Sister Pat, from St Francis, spoke eloquently as guest speaker at the Interfaith Service.
The Israel Heritage Celebration on June 8 will be publicized in the Shabbat Reminder with hopes of having a good show-
ing by the JCC. The date of the June board meeting will be changed so that board members may attend the celebration.
K. Schwing will be making an afghan to raffle off at the bazaar to raise money for the JCC.
Approximately 15 kids sang 5 songs from Barnegat High School’s production of Fiddler on the Roof at a Friday night ser-
vice at the JCC.
A motion was made and approved to proclaim that the JCC wishes George Katz a very happy birthday and thanks him for
everything he’s done for the decades for the JCC.

Rebuild Capital Campaign
We have a total of 114 donors – an increase of 5. We have $586,476 in pledges and donations and
$328,000 realized from the sale of the condo and raffles. This gives us a grand total of $914,476 – an increase of
$16,300. Total money on hand is $636,124 – an increase of $11,500.
R. Valentine sent out a letter to the current donors discussing plans to publish the names and corresponding
donation levels in the next bulletin. This list will be identified as preliminary and will be updated with changes in
levels of giving.
The list of potential donors will be updated and sent out again to board members to make calls to in June
when more members have returned.
Suggestions for fundraising were discussed including a Rebuild Event/Gala night with donated big-ticket items
to be raffled. Raising dues and assessing members a yearly fee to raise money for the building fund were also
discussed. Options to raise potentially more significant funds were discussed including selling a portion of the property where
the JCC is located and obtaining a 5-year mortgage of $300,000 - $400,000 with loans from members using the
rabbi’s condo as collateral. If the condo is to be used as collateral, it will require board approval as well as ap-
proval by the congregation as the condo may have to be sold to repay the loans. D. Pripstein will send out a no-
tice to the board, regarding the option to obtain a 5-year mortgage with loans from members, allowing at least 30
days for consideration before voting at the June 15th meeting.
JCC Rebuild Committee
The Long Beach Township Land Use Board approved the JCC’s application for construction on April 14th.
On April 15th, E. Dreyfus met with the architect, Craig Brearley, to get started on construction drawings. Once
we have the construction drawings we will go out for bids to contractors. A meeting to go over contracts will be
held on May 12th.
A new Contractor Evaluation and Negotiating sub-committee has been formed which includes E. Dreyfus, J.
Shapiro, S. Snyder, H. Farin, Lionel Wolpert, D. Pripstein and Sol Yarmush. E. Dreyfus presented a check for $3150 to G. Katz for a refund from the Township for overpayment of fees. Other Topics
J. Silver has announced her resignation from the board. D. Pripstein nominated H. Farin to complete the
term for J. Silver’s position. A call for the election of H. Farin was held and the vote was unanimous in favor.
D. Pripstein reported that the nominating committee will need to contact board members and all 4 board
officers whose term ends in August and present a slate at the next board meeting.
J. Shapiro reported total income is on track at this point and total expenses are currently better than what has
been budgeted so far.
J. Riffle reported that phone calls will be made to 26 of our previous vendors for the bazaars. The North
Beach Sign will be used to advertise the August Bazaar and the Art Festival.
J. Shapiro reported that the number of artists who have signed up for the Art Festival is ahead of last year at
this time.
J. Riffle reported that scholarship selections have been made for Southern Regional, Pinelands and Barnegat
High Schools. Each recipient will receive a $500 scholarship.
It was reported that the Bat Mitzvah for Caitlyn Deutsch was held May 8th. An open house for the religious
school will be held May 23. The event has been publicized in an effort to attract school children from the
mainland. May 22nd
is the B’nai Mitzvot of Samantha and Ben Eisenberg.
T. Schwait will meet with Marcie Deutsch to complete work on nametags for services.
The possibility of raising the price of including names in the High Holidays Book of Remembrance as well as
the price of High Holiday seats was discussed.
R. Rosner and V. Fitts discussed the possibility of honoring individuals with lifetime or honorary membership.
Specific criteria would be needed to identify who is eligible for such a membership to pursue this.
T. Schwait reported that interviews for the ―Living History‖ will continue this summer.
K. Schwing reported that 130 people have opened the bulletin on-line so far.
Another website training session is planned so that people are able to make updates.
J. Smith reported that monthly breakfasts are still continuing, as is mahjong on Wednesdays.
D. Pripstein noted that a summer handyman is still needed. He also reported that Friday night services now
start at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning services at 9:30 a.m. as we begin our summer schedule. Israel Heritage night at the Lakeland Blue Claws baseball game is Tuesday, June 8
th.

I t is hard to be-
lieve that this past Sunday
marked the end of an-
other year of R e l i g i o u s
School. We had an amaz-
ing year!! I would like to
take a mo- ment to thank
our wonderful teaching staff.
Nitza Solon, Renee Dean, Alex Golden and Jessica Schwing (our always
reliable volunteer) not only made sure that the children learned, but that they had a fun
and memorable experience.
Of course our program would not have been a success without the help of our
parents and the support of our community. Each and every parent helped provide
snack and a helping hand at our events. Rabbi Jack, Lynn Berkowitz and Don Pripstein
were always available to offer pearls of wisdom and their support. Countless members
of the community stepped up to say "I can help with that!" Whether it was advertising,
judging a menorah decorating contest, schlepping our menorah to SOCH or helping us
take water samples for World Wide Water Monitoring Day, these folks pitched in. I
would like to thank the Sisterhood, Judi Smith, Rose Valentine, Mark Cohen, Phil Levy
and Ben Gubar (my apologies if I forgot anyone). Without their help our program would
not have been as great a success.
As a parent the close of this school means I am going to hear three words more
time than I would ever want to. "Mom I'm bored" will be repeated more times than I
choose to imagine. I offer these suggestions to those that may be in the same boat:
1) Become one with nature. Take time to marvel at God's creation. Whether you go to
the beach or a pick your own farm (www.pickyourown.org) take a look. There are lots
of amazing things to see.
2) Visit Lakewood - There are several great stores that carry Kosher foods, books, crafts,
and merchandise. Whether it's fresh baked challah or a Havdallah candle, Lakewood
has it all. Feel free to contact either Lynn Berkowitz or myself for information - who
knows we might just offer to be your tour guide!
3) Explore your heritage- I am told that The Jewish Museum in NYC
(www.thejewishmuseum.org) is a great place to visit. Planning a trip? Find a local Syna-
gogue or JCC to tour.
4) Find your roots: sit with your children and work on your family tree. As busy parent
we rarely have the time to just let loose and chat. My children (Max and Josh) especially
love hearing funny stories about their Grandpa Artie (who passed away) and stories
about when I was a little girl. It's a fun trip down memory lane for me and a great way
for kids to hear about their roots.
5) Take out that Hebrew School Roster and dial up a buddy for a play date. It would be
great for the kids to see each other during the summer. Who knows - their Mom might
be hearing those three words too!
I wish you all a wonderful summer! I hope to see you all soon!!

The letter and order forms for High Holiday tickets and Roll of Re-
membrance Booklet are being mailed to members shortly. Because the High
Holidays are so early this year, (begin during Labor Day week), we expect a
larger than usual response for tickets. After August 5th we will start filling in
seat requests from non-members. To make sure you get the seats you re-
quest, you must get your request with your payment for the seats back to
Carole Nunberg soon. As in the past few years, services will be held at the
LBI Foundation in Loveladies for both morning services of Rosh Hashana, for
Kol Nidre, and for Yom Kippur morning. The R.H. evening services, as well
as Mincha and Neilah on Yom Kippur and the Break the Fast will again be at
our JCC Building in Spray Beach. An abbreviated Family Service will again be
held at the JCC on the first day of Rosh Hashana beginning at 4:00 pm.
The prices for tickets and for the Roll of Remembrance listings remain
the same as in the past few years. Seat tickets are $75 for members and $150
for non-members, while the cost for each name listed in Roll of Remem-
brance remains at $9.00.
