a playground, and a school hall-cum-gym was built here in about 1945. This was used for “marching – very formal, to music, and exercises,” as well as for gym lessons, assemblies and singing with Miss Lilian.

Another former pupil recalls that, in the 1930s,

the garden “was divided out in little plots and each pupil had a little plot of their own… we grew all sorts of things, or if we wanted to bring a bowl and dig it into the ground and make a little pond we could do.” In the years after the war, school outings were a rarity, but Rosemary Deacon (née Willett) recalls that “In 1953 we went down to Portsmouth on the train, and went over the Victory and along to Southsea – that was a big event.”

Last month in our progress up The Avenue we looked at the houses and schools on the sites of Rushmere Court and Lansdowne Court. As we continue up The Avenue, after passing Squirrels Court (on the site of Grafton House) and Mowat Court (on the site of Park House), we come to Kingsley Court, on the site of another villa used as a private school, Kingsley High School (shown in our illustrations), run by Miss Edith Trott and her sister Miss Lilian.

Miss Trott had begun with seven pupils in one room of a house in Raynes Park in 1927. The school grew rapidly and in 1934 a branch was opened in the Malden Institute, which moved about two years later to 25 The Avenue; the schools were amalgamated here in 1942. They catered for girls aged 5 to 19 (and a few small boys), although many took the 11-plus to local grammar schools. Margaret Rymill (née Batt), a pupil in the 1940s, remembers it as a tall Victorian house, with a conservatory at the side where they hung up their coats, and a cellar used as an air-raid shelter. The uniform consisted of a gymslip with box-pleats, blouse, tie, and red (latterly navy) blazer. Margaret Trickett (née Davies) adds “The summer uniform was blue and white dresses: these could be floral or a shadow-check, but stripes and dots were forbidden as they might fog the eyes of anyone sitting behind.” The school motto was borrowed from the RAF’s: “per ardua ad astra: through endeavour to the stars.”

Margaret Rymill recalls “Lessons were very formal right from the first day at school, which could be rather bewildering for a timid five year old. We had copy books, with printed writing which we had to copy exactly, difficult for the left-handed among us. In the afternoon the little ones were allowed to play with Plasticine, but still sitting at their desks. We learned French from about six years old, learning the French words for everything on a large picture of a farmyard. We had a percussion band: Miss Lilian played the piano, and we joined in on drums, cymbals, tambourines and triangles. We received a sound education with a number passing ‘the scholarship’.”

In winter, at mid-morning break, “we had little tin cups with warm milk in, and I used to take a little jar or packet of sugar with me, because I liked it sweet. First thing in the morning we had our nails inspected, and if they were clean all week we had a sweet.” In the garden was

Margaret Trickett recalls Miss Trott’s study. “A smell of mantel polish used to hit you as you went in, and she was sitting grandly behind her desk. She was very fond of cats, and whenever you went in there was a cat somewhere in the study. She used to call them by fantastic names. One day in February ’52 she came into all the classes and she said ‘I’m afraid I have some very bad news for you all: I’m afraid the King is dead.’ Several of us, because she gave her cats such fantastic names, thought she was telling us about the death of her cat, and it was some minutes before we realised what it was all about. Looking back I think she had more humour and a lot more understanding than perhaps we all gave her credit for at the time.”Opposite Kingsley Court is Woodlands Avenue, the entrance to the area developed in the 1930s as the Avenue Estate. One of the streams of the Beverley

Brook: used to run under the road, continuing beside

the allotments on the land where the northern part of Avon Close now stands. Frank Read recalls “I had an allotment there during the war… we used to get our water there for watering the plants.”

Margaret Trickett, who grew up in Woodlands

Avenue, recalls flooding caused by the brook: “I remember Mr Reynolds who lived in no. 11 wading up and down outside our house, piggy-backing the slightly older, frailer people coming back from the City: and there was Mr Reynolds, quite a tall chap, and there were the little men in bowler hats being ferried past our house – and then Miss Trott of all people came down with a big umbrella to look at the floods, and she was saying ‘Good evening, Mr Davies,’ as was her way, and then all of a sudden, ‘Oh, aren’t your laburnums magnificent, I have never seen’ et cetera et cetera, and the floods were momentarily forgotten while the laburnums were admired.”

Next month we will continue to Edenfield Gardens to investigate The Avenue Estate further. In the meantime, for the benefit of those who didn’t see last month’s magazine, I thought it would be good to mark the forthcoming royal wedding by reproducing photographs of any Worcester Park street parties or celebrations for other royal weddings, perhaps in 1947 or 1981. Do you have any photographs or memories of such occasions? If so, do contact me, please.

The bungalows of Worcester Park epitomise suburbia. They sprung up like mushrooms in this area in the early 1930’s and are something to which many people aspire. It is noticeable how many lottery winners seem to yearn for “a nice little bungalow”! Although such homes remind us of those in their retirement years, the attraction of living somewhere that doesn’t have stairs is also there for those who have mobility problems – whatever their age. My husband and I came to live in our own little home in 1982 because we realised that continuing to live in a conventional “three up / two down” at that time would become increasingly problematical because our son was a wheelchair user.

Anyone who is familiar with the Salisbury Road area of Worcester Park will, on close inspection, realise that although we all appear to be living in similar “little boxes” each house is slightly different. It seems that Brand Estates & Davis Estates who masterminded the erection of the buildings in this area had wanted every dwelling to have its own stamp of individuality, and they certainly succeeded. When we first lived here we made an interesting voyage of discovery each time we visited a new neighbour, comparing different layouts and dimensions of rooms. Although many of our homes contain impressive beamed ceilings and typical 1930’s stained-glass porthole windows in living rooms, no-one’s home is exactly the same as their neighbours.

Can you imagine a modern architect taking the time and trouble to do such a thing? Most housing estates nowadays seem to consist of cloned characterless people hutches, hastily constructed and sold for a quick buck. Our homes were built at a time when quality and pride in workmanship counted. Our walls are built of solid bricks which give both warmth and soundproofing. I am a keen party giver and also play several musical instruments, but my neighbours are never bothered by it. (Come to think of it, they are such a friendly bunch round here, most of them are at my parties anyway!)

The only time that too much noise was an issue was once, when in musical mode, I hired a saxophone. My husband commented that he could vaguely hear the sound of a wounded sea-lion emitting from the house.

And yes, I did give that instrument up!

Even wartime bombing couldn’t get the better of our homes. As our estate is fairly near to a railway line leading to London, during World War 2 our area was often targeted by the Luftwaffe. Many homes were severely damaged, but were repaired and are still standing firmly all these years later.

Without a doubt, once you move into a bungalow it is a love affair that never ends. Everything is on hand, so there are no moments when you curse about leaving something you need downstairs, added to which there is definitely no risk of falling down to the ground floor in the middle of the night as you sleepily grope for the bathroom!

The only downside to living here - and I really had to think hard to find one - seems to be that your body forgets what stairs are like, and when you have cause

to visit a house with one or more stories your heart reminds you that you really should do more aerobic exercises!

So many people nowadays complain that they don’t know their neighbours, but there is definitely something about living in a bungalow that seems to make people more friendly. Without being intrusive we all seem to care about each other. We notice if someone doesn’t open their curtains in the morning or if they don’t take their milk in. So often we read in the press about people who have died and lain undiscovered in anonymous flats for weeks – even months. There would be no chance of that happening here.

When I was at school I studied the book “Lark Rise to Candleford”, which many people will be familiar with due to its television adaptation. Its author, Flora Thompson, wrote it (much of which is based on her own early days) to illustrate how a rural society lived before industrialisation took over. As I socialise with my many wonderful neighbours (most of whom have live here for a very long time), and as I view their lovingly tended gardens, I am reminded of Flora’s book. Bungalows have echoes of old English villages where everyone knew each other and became a firm part of the fabric of each other’s lives. I often think that our little corner of Worcester Park is an echo of a time when everyone felt part of the community and took pride in their surroundings.

When I was a child I lived about a mile or so away from here and would come carol singing with friends every Christmas. I remember seeing holly wreaths on the heavily varnished oak doors of Salisbury Road. As we rat – tatted on the wrought iron knockers I would think how lovely it would be to live in such a place, never dreaming that my fantasy would one day come true.

As those of us who live here get older we become more aware that we exist in a microcosm of a vanishing concept – a community that cares.Everyone in these roads regularly receives literature from local estate agents begging us to sell our homes to their interested clients, whom, it often seems, would happily pay over the odds to be in our shoes. The truth is that the majority of us are so happy to live in our “little boxes” that we don’t want to leave until they carry us out in one! We know when we are onto a good thing!

As they live and grow trees inspire us, offer shade and habitat to wildlife and convert carbon dioxide to life giving oxygen. In death they provide us with many more resources that enrich our lives, A luthier will make the wood sing, a turner will conjure a cup or plate from a log. Shelter from the elements is provided by a carpenter and the skills of the furniture maker give us a seat in which to rest and a table to eat at. Best of all, if managed responsibly, wood is a renewable resource.

Many people find working with wood absorbing and stimulating. Even a lifetime spent as a woodworker is not enough time to learn it all. There is always another technique or species to discover. Everyone can appreciate

have an interest in wood there are many sources to assist in your search for knowledge. Books, magazines, the dvd and naturally the internet but woodwork is about acquiring practical skills and making shavings. The best way to learn is to observe then

imitate. That is the ethos of the members of the Sutton Association of Woodworkers.

As chairman of the club I can say that we are an enthusiastic group who meet at Cheam Methodist Church hall on the fourth Thursday of every month. Our purpose is to socialize and exchange ideas and skills with fellow wood workers. Anyone with an interest in wood crafts whatever their abilities are welcome to join. Finding out about local music, theatre and entertainment events is a real challenge. Yes, you can do an internet lookup on each of the locations nearest to you, but it's a slog and if you are new to the area or visiting another town it's nigh on impossible.

Ents24 was original started in 1999 by three Bristol University students and their online offering was launched in 2005. A small group of people do the 'what's on' research and add 10,000 new listings every week. There's no charge for using the search facility and no additional charge if you go on to buy tickets for an event. By registering on the site you will be emailed a 'Tickets and Tours' bulletin every Thursday, and a further notification each Monday of events that are specifically local to you.

If you are running an event yourself it is also free to list it on this award winning site. WPLife

The Holy Cross Girls’ School in New Malden has Science

College Status. The aim of the status is to create a challenging environment

which raises the standard of achievement in Science and Mathematics for all students. Science colleges are also expected to be active partners in a learning society with their local families of schools and their communities sharing resources and disseminating good practice.

This has helped the department to broaden links with the community through out reach work in our local primary schools and also by offering a “Forensic Science Crime Scene Investigation Masterclass” for local adult residents. The Masterclass course consists of a six week lecture series, commencing Thursday 9th June, covering the many fields within forensic science. Each session is held in one of the Labs at the school lasts about an hour starting at

6.00pm. During each session there is a practical activity that puts theory into practice. The course starts with an introduction to Forensic Science and Criminal Law and over the six weeks will cover subjects such as Forensic

Anthropology and Fingerprinting as well as other interesting Forensic Science topics.

There is no charge for the course. There are 30 places on offer and will be reserved on a first come first served basis and at the latest by Friday 13th May.

The Worcester Park Dramatic Society is a local amateur drama group of long standing. We stage two major productions a year at the Adrian Mann Theatre in Ewell, in April and November.

We meet every Tuesday and most Fridays at 8.15 pm in the Elmcroft Community Centre in North Cheam, on the Sainsbury’s site. Apart from play readings, rehearsals and set construction, we have quiz nights and various social events. We also arrange group outings to amateur and professional theatre productions.

Our next production is being held 14-16th April in the Adrian Mann Theatre, Ewell. You can read more about it in the synopsis opposite and advert below.

We welcome new members to help us stage future productions, anyone willing to act or work backstage.

The latter includes stage management, set construction, sound and lighting. If interested, please contact our membership secretary, Joyce Cranfield, on 020 8337 3317.

About the ‘The Militants’This superb period drama is set

in the fictitious Lancashire town of Metringham, near Manchester, in April 1908 at a time when the suffragette movement was becoming a force to be reckoned with in England and when Winston Churchill was standing for re-election to the safe seat of North Manchester. The action takes place in and outside the house of Alderman Josiah Malin, the Mayor-elect of Metringham and a leading figure in the community. He is adamant that the suffragette movement will not gain a hold ‘on his patch’ and determines to crack down hard at the first signs of any disturbances – perhaps easier said than done......

Helping To Make

Worcester Park A Nice Place To

Live

Jim and “The Gaffer”At the lower end of our allotment site lies the entrance to a secret garden. For most of the year, it’s hidden by greenery. But on a stark January day you can’t miss it. On a corner where the path sweeps round towards the car park, there’s a bird table where robins squabble for seeds. Below is a white sign bearing the inscription: The Jim Mansbridge Wildlife Area. Who was Jim, I wondered, and how did the area come to be created? “Go and talk to Jean”, was the advice I was given. “It was Jean’s project”. Jean Galsworthy is a surprising woman. Judging by her two and a half productive plots, you might think she was a lifelong allotment addict. You’d be wrong. “I just wanted somewhere to burn garden prunings”, she admitted. “In 1990, local residents got a council leaflet inviting them to take on a vacant plot. They assured us you didn’t have to do anything on it.” How times change! For the annual sum of £7, she was allocated a half plot : a wilderness with a damson tree –and no damsons. Some would have sprayed the lot with weed killer. Not Jean. Never keen on pesticides, she decided to go completely organic. In this she was ahead of the trend. Armed with only an old sickle and a fork, she cleared the plot and planted lettuces and a herb garden. Soon, she was hooked. In October, she took on the derelict other half, “to stop somebody else messing about on my plot!” Two more followed. But with many plots still unlet, something had to be done to prevent the site being grabbed by developers. So Jean set about recruiting a band of enthusiastic volunteers to “get things moving”. Her efforts paid off. Working parties gradually cleared neglected plots and Open Days drew in a dozen new tenants.Perhaps Jean’s biggest triumph was to persuade the AGM to accept her plans to turn a triangle of land roughly 160 x 90 feet into a wildlife area. Most of this was left as cover for birds, foxes and badgers. The remainder, often flooded in winter, was dug out to form a pond, drainage ditches, bog garden and meadow area. Jim Mansbridge, a retired policeman, was full of

.This article will look at the benefits of applying a woodchip mulch to your garden. Many people spend quite large amounts of money on decorative/ ornamental woodchip from garden centres this can often be bought from tree surgeons at much reduced prices who do not have the expensive overheads of packaging etc. The most frequent reason for buying woodchip is the benefit in terms of helping control the development of weeds in garden beds, the level needs to be about 6 inches deep to ensure that no light can reach the weeds as they start to develop a stem.

Such coverings in your garden are often the by-products of the arboricultural industry and can be divided into 3 broad groups. Hardwood chip is usually devoid of leaf matter and is used on paths and play areas, it lasts a long time as the wood takes longer to break down; woodland mulch is used

in borders and can contain key nutrients that benefit the soil and plants. Lastly bark

shavings form an ornamental covering in borders and play areas; these are often dyed to give an interesting range of colours though the sun usually bleaches the dye out quite quickly.

Within borders a key benefit of a good woodchip mulch is the influence upon moisture conditions. On heavy clay soils the breakdown of the mulch helps increase the organic content and improves drainage reducing the problems of waterlogged soils with poor aeration. On some allotments I have seen the hard work of members in digging in large amounts of mulch to create raised beds

with a high nutrient and excellent drainage.

In the dry period of summer the woodchip covering also aids in reducing moisture loss from the soil by evaporation. This saves time and money in making the watering of garden beds a little less frequent!.

It is important that the woodchip mulch is not sourced from diseased trees, the fungal activity could spread to your garden trees and shrubs. A good idea is to store the woodchip mulch if it is not fully composted so rain and the other elements can break down the material fully. This is one reason why applying mulch in the winter months is a good option, the composting is complete by the time spring arrives. It is worth checking that the source of your woodchip is from a good source especially if you access it from tree surgeons like us. WPLife

recipe

Chinese five-spice paste is an aromatic blend of cinnamon, fennel, star anise, ginger and cloves. It’s great for adding an authentic Oriental flavour to meat, fish and poultry. You’ll find small jars of it in the herb and spice sections of most supermarkets.

4 chicken fillets with skin10ml (2tsp) Chinese five-spice paste 10ml (2tsp) sunflower oil60ml (4tbsp) light soy sauce30ml (2tbsp) runny honey1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce225g (8oz) hot cooked long grain rice, to serveShredded spring onions and finely chopped red chilli, to garnish

1 Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas

5. Spread the five-spice paste over the skin of

each chicken fillet and place in a foil-lined roasting tin. Drizzle over the oil and roast for 30-35 mins until the chicken is cooked through and the spice coated skin is lightly charred.2 Remove the chicken from the tin and cover and keep warm. Pour any juices from the roasting tin into a small pan and add the soy sauce and honey. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 4-5 mins until slightly thickened, Stir in the sweet chilli sauce.3 Slice each chicken fillet into 5 pieces and arrange on a bed of

hot cooked rice. Garnish with the shredded spring onion. Serve the soy and honey sauce in small bowls, garnished with chopped red chilli. WPLife

Safer Neighbourhoods is a truly local policing style: local people working with local police and partners to identify and tackle issues of concern in their neighbourhood. Safer Neighbourhoods teams usually consist of one Sergeant, two Constables and three police Community Support Officers (PCSO’s), although there are variations.

They are trained to communicate with a wide range of people, communities and partners, to tackle and solve community problems. Experience suggests these are most likely to be quality-of-life issues, such as anti-social behaviour, criminal damage, abandoned cars and graffiti.

Safer Neighbourhoods teams are dedicated to the needs of each specific neighbourhood, with the policing priorities for that area decided in partnership with local stakeholders - the public, crime and disorder reduction partnerships (CDRP’s), local authorities and other local organisations.

The teams are permanent, not a ‘quick fix’ brought

in to respond to local changes in crime and disorder. What’s important and different about this neighbourhood policing model is the officer’s work at grass roots level in addition to London’s other policing teams and specialist units.

Safer Neighbourhoods teams are assigned, in most cases, according to the boundaries of each of London’s 624 electoral wards.

The programme began its phased roll out in April 2004, and in April 2006 the remaining teams were put in place - two years ahead of the Government set target for national neighbourhood policing. All 624 neighbourhood

wards across the capital now have their own dedicated Safer Neighbourhoods team - that’s around 20 teams per borough. Five additional teams cover the city of Westminster and there is an extra team in Crystal Palace covering an area where three boroughs meet. This brings the total number of Safer Neighbourhoods teams to 630 - that’s over 4,100 officers and police community support officers dedicated to neighbourhood policing. Neighbourhood policing has proved popular and successful, not only in London but throughout the UK and will almost certainly continue to do so.

Worcester Park spans four wards, those in the Borough of Sutton are covered by ‘Worcester Park’ and ‘Nonsuch’ (contact details at foot of page). Those of you in the Borough of Kingston upon Thames are covered by ‘Old Malden’ (020 8721 2595) and don’t worry if you live outside the Metropolitan area in Surrey’s ‘Cuddington’ Ward, you too have a dedicated team of neighbourhood officers covering your area and they can be contacted on 0845 125 2222 ex 30158.

Please contact your team if you have any concerns or worries about crime or something that may be affecting your neighbourhood.

Thank you. WPLife
